    Here's a video that talks about our PTF-17. It gives the history, ship architecture, and armaments!

      @@BuffaloNavalPark I'll find a way to send it to your office. The twin props and rudders match the PTF class, and the rest is scratch superstructure.

    Thanks for the video. So, when will we see a sequel to McHale's Navy on a PTF?
    BTW, another student in my high school was named McHale. He at least claimed he went in the Navy.

    Videos of inside would indeed be interesting, but how safe would it be while holding a big camera and possibly a light? Topside didn't look very flat either?
    (Whenever I hear PT followed by boat my mind flashes back to watching McHale's Navy with Ensign Parker. 😅)
    I remember you once said you wished the park was purely Naval. If you had your druthers, what would you trade the fighter plans and helicopter for?

      Hi Vegan - thanks for watching as always! It is safe in there. With the hull water tight and general cleanup down below it's not too hard to navigate! I would deaccession the VooDoo, and Fury, the Bulldog tank, and the Armored Personnel Carrier. Some of those are on loan to us from other museums, so they would need to go back to them. The Huey and PTF would stay here. I would love to see two 3"50s come back for the 01 level of Sullivans and trade away the two twin 40 Bofors...I would also love to get a P40 Warhawk, to go along with our P39 Airacobra. Between these planes, roughly 28,000 of them were constructed here in Buffalo during WWII.

    Forgot. Amazed that it was created from hardwoods. What did they use to make it water tight?

      That is a great question - I've skimmed through the boat manual for PTF17, and I'll be darned if I can find anything that mentions a sealant! I'm no carpenter, but some areas did have thin aluminum plating in the interior, the transverse framing worked to keep the hull in place and then paint and sealant. I didn't see anything about sealing product in between the wood boards of the hull. Sorry, that's the best I got!

    Was this one just a gunboat? I saw the two torpedoes on the ground beside her, but you don't mention any tubes on her deck when describing the armament... also, be cool to see below decks, although I suspect maybe not yet restored, hence why everything's buttoned up tight?

      roadsweeper, thanks for commenting. To my research this was just a gun boat. The torpedoes were loaded onto PTF3 and PTF4, but were removed shortly afterwards as torpedo targets were not prevalent in Vietnam. I will probably do a video soon showing the inside!     Great video Shane. Question: were there any kind of hand rails on the main deck❓ I can't imagine manning those 20mm's on a wet deck, between the superstructure and the drink, esp. while the boat is maneuvering on choppy water.

      Thanks for watching as always, eherrmann! Yes, there were stanchions and two life lines that "manned the rails". The groups that have been preserving the boat just haven't put them up yet. They are still doing a little work on the deck and once that's done, they will be placing them back aboard! Appreciate it!

    are there any plans to open up the interior to tours? I'd very much like to see what it looks like inside. My uncle who served in Vietnam served on one of those boats as a Gunners-Mate and I'd love to see what it was like for him living on that.

      Hello...and thanks for watching. I do plan on doing an inside tour, using the blueprints from PTF3 (which, oddly enough is the one we have in our collections.) That should be done over the next week or so. Appreciate your support!

      @@BuffaloNavalPark I much appreciate your response. I have my uncle's K-Bar combat knife from his time in Vietnam with me. if I come visit the ship, I'd like to bring the knife and show it to someone in the museum. I don't plan on donating the knife as it was given to me by my uncle before he passed away, but I wouldn't mind you guys taking some photos of it if you like.

    It would be someting if you could make the PTF sea worthy and give rides or do a makeshift patrol or something!

      Thanks Greg...it would be very cost prohibitive to do so, with the regulations for these watercraft here in NYS! I don't disagree with these regulations, it would just be too much to repair and register under a historic vessel. They would have many, many requirements!

      I realize that there is a lot of finances involved, and Having been involved with boating in New York State and the Province of Ontario for well over half a century now, I'm aware of many of the regs involved, required inspections, ect. and it would definitely be quite some time in the future, to even be feasible, but I was surprised to find out that there is 1 PT boat that does do rides from time to time.
      Engines, fuel tanks, Capt. License, fire and safety equipment and all the other things would involve quite a lot. It would still really be something though!
      You'd gain a lot of attention just taking it out without passengers!

    I'm a bit surprised at the complete lack of railing on the deck. Obviously, the will preclude having any visitors on board (I don't know if that is in the plans or not). Are you planning on adding some sort of visitor experience with her other than what is there now?

      Lonny...thanks for your comment. As part of the three year preservation effort, the stanchions and life lines will be going back on. They just haven't yet, as they're still working on the Bofor. Once they do I will be doing an "Add on" tour for visitors. A small tour for an $5 - $10 upcharge on their normal ticket.

      My wife and I are planning on going to Boston next summer as a graduation gift to our oldest. Buffalo is on our way from Columbus, so I'm trying to figure out how to work in a stop at the museum. We really enjoyed our visit last July, and I know the kids (and myself, of course) would like to visit again.

      And I believe there are about six PTF's (Trumpy's and Osprey's) that are around in various states of preservation. Thank you!

      Yes there are Four Higgin' PT's, PT-305 in New Orleans, PT-309 at the Admiral Nimitz Museum, in Texas, PT-658 (operational) Portland, Oregon, PT-796 PT Boat Inc. Museum in Fall River, Mass. Also an 80 ft. Elco, PT-617 also in Fall River, Mass.

      @@waynetraxel6690 Thanks, I saw one on a visit to Inner Harbor several years ago it was there during a Tall ship Festival. I went over her and was really impressed. I forget which one, I remember being told that there were some that people were trying to restore and 2 or three restored. That a few had been turned into yachts. I would love to see a restored and at Patriot Point in Charleston SC

    I did 2 summer cruises on COSRIVDIV21 boats in the 70s while they were at Great Lakes. At that time, the mount on the bow had an 81mm mortar with a .50bmg piggybacked on top, which was held belowdecks in the weapons locker when not in use.
    I'm afraid to ask, but what's the condition of the interior?

      Thanks for watching, Robert! Appreciate it, and hope you enjoyed this look back now that she has been preserved. The preservation volunteer groups removed the 81mm as it was too degraded to restore. The plan (as last I spoke with the groups) was to put a dummy mortar in place - painted PVC - it will do the job for the thousands of people who view it from the ground.
      For the interior, no work has been done other than general maintenance, cleanup and most importantly, re-planking those areas of the hull that were exposing the interior to the weather. As you can see, she's stabilized and if we choose to bring the interior back to life, I feel more comfortable with that exposure sealed up. I do plan on doing a video of the interior using the Booklet of General Plans I have for PTF3, and comparing. Appreciate you watching!

    Is there any major difference between PT Boats and PTF Boats. All I find on Google is that PTF Boats are a Vietnam Era Version of the WWII PT Boats.

      Thanks for your questions. Differences between WWII and Vietnam PT and PTF boats included: Wider beam for PTFs, one more engine (total of three) for PTs, small arms were very similar, but of course, PTFs very quickly removed the torpedo tubes - a necessity in the Pacific during WWII, but not in Vietnam. Also, if not mistaken about the PTs engines, in those the engines were gasoline driven, while PTFs were diesel. Hull construction was similar along with top speeds. Hope this helps!
