Dude just watches a video or two made by the Japanese gamers. That can clarify some of your questions and doubts on this matter, as they offer unique insights into why certain Japanese individuals are signing the petition.
@@cylon_aspect6474 nobody cares what Japan thinks any more than anyone else lol. Nobody fought for me when they made random anime portrayals of America that were innaccurate. Why should I care now?
We didn't really hire a Japanese history expert. We only set it in Japan because the users asked us to set it in Japan. When I discussed this with the sweet baby people, they advised me that it would be better if the main character was black. I thought Yasuke, who happened to be from that era, would be a good choice. However, I was at a loss as to how to make Yasuke, who is neither an assassin nor anything else, the protagonist. There wasn't much information about him in the history, so I decided to create a free history. First, make him a samurai. Then let's make him gay. If he is black, a samurai and gay, he is sure to be popular. In addition, if we play hip-hop, the stupid black people will be happy. Users don't know much about Japanese history, so we thought that if we told our history as if it were historical fact, it would be more realistic and the game would be better received. However, as soon as we said in the interview that this was 'historical fact', the damned Yellow Monkeys started to make a fuss. So we altered the interview and changed it to "historical fiction based on historical facts", so there should be no problem. There is no need for us to apologise. It's easy to use black racism as a shield and public opinion will shut up. Blacks and Asians can fight on their own. We whites have nothing to do with it. We are UBI.
I got bummed when I saw Yasuke as main character instead of an Asian protagonist, but as you mention one can go through the game only playing a Naoe. HOWEVER, the main issue why I won't be buying or playing this is the disregard Ubisoft has treated this specific entry, with so many inaccuracies in how they portrait Japan, copyright infringements and even wrong Japanese language usage... On this respect, Ubisoft needs to be accounted for and I really hope the affected entities in Japan make a legal push to get the contents improved. More than getting the game cancelled, it needs a very very big patch, and a historical disclaimer.
This controversy made me think of this: Brian: You’ve got to think for yourselves! You’re all individuals! Crowd (in unison): Yes, we are all individuals!
In my opinion it's less the historical accuracy as much as every other protag. Fits the setting their set in. For example Altair is Syrian Ezio is Italian Edward is English Arno is French Bayak is Egyptian the Frye twins are English The Spartans are Greek the Eivors are norse Ect. For people like myself we'd just prefer a Set of Japanese characters in Japan and as a Black man myself that would be fine with me.
I wish everybody could take a step back, take a deep breath, and realistically think as sensibly and as rationally as you are explaining. Your content is much appreciated and an influence for me. Thank you!
The petition won't do much. Most petitions related to video games have had barely to no influence on the games. Plus i don't think ubisoft would just say well we wasted alot of money on this ame and probably won't get any in return because we need to follow this petition. Plus there is also a petition going around to not cancel AC shadows. So i don't think it's getting cancelled.
@@Aureus_ that's your opinion but don't say the narrative of "many disappointments" when that's simply not the truth, the only disappointment from the last few years was vahalla. The RPG experience is a fresh take on the series that needed it, and with shadows this is the ultimate potential masterpiece conclusion to the RPG era.
I agree that the game shouldn't be canceled. But it should be changed, adding something in the story to explain the inaccuracies. Most of the people upset about Yasuke are upset because he wasn't ever a samurai in name or in action, only a loyal servant. It's really disrespectful to claim Yasuke to be a samurai and gay when he wasn't either of those. I'm not a right winged American and I like to see more diversity in gaming but only if it fits. Ubisoft came out and actually said they wanted Yasuke to be "their samurai" one that wasn't native to Japan. The consultants for this game was a woman who focuses on what Buddhist priests have done to adolescent boys in Japan(she's a professor of Japanese literature not history) and a full caucasian man who wrote fictional books claiming Yasuke to be a samurai and even edited Wikipedia articles since 2015 to fit this. It isn't a matter of Yasuke being black it's a matter of claiming he was higher in the system than he was. He also brutally kills Japanese samurai while hiphop/rap music is playing. I'm not saying that there aren't people who are just against Yasuke cause he's black. The majority of the people advocating for this are actually Japanese and diehard fans of ac games. I personally am very conflicted, I stand with the Japanese and everyone else agreeing that this game is disrespectful as it claims historical accuracy but is inaccurate to such an extent, however at the same time I've been waiting for an ac game set in Japan. So the game should not be canceled, but it should be changed, something should be added. A suggestion I have is in the modern day have the animus glitch or get hacked to show these inaccuracies. This is a truly upsetting situation and I implore Ubisoft to add a story reason for the inaccuracies. I agree with your points, Jay, but the real reason for the outrage must also be mentioned.
Changed is actually respectable and I agree many aspects of the game should be fixed. I just find the idea of cancelling art that bothers people to be an extremely slippery slope. IMO, the game should be delayed. At the very least, there's no reason that they should be getting architecture and Kanji wrong. That's just stupidity on their part. What's odd is I did talk about inaccuracies and art theft 2 times in the video, but most didn't watch long enough to get to those points, according to the view time metrics. I kind of feel like that part is not really my problem if people don't hear me out, though.
@@DegenerateJay Yes I 100% agree that it should be delayed and not canceled. To address your point about bringing up the inaccuracies and art theft, most people didn't pay attention to when you mentioned them and think of the petition coming from racism and out of nowhere. I, respectfully, suggest that you make another video addressing the inaccuracies more in depth with research on the issues and focusing on what you want Ubisoft to do in order to clear any confusion. Again, this is just a respectful suggestion, feel free to make the video or not.
@@jonjonboi3701 no it shouldn’t but it should definitely be changed. I don’t mean like small changes I mean massive overhauls of the game. Like completely changing the story and all the disrespectful and inaccurate elements of the game.
Money - and the lack of it - is the only thing that these big gaming companies will understand. If enough people don't buy something, they won't want/be able to make it again. But what tends to happen (in other hobby circles anyway) is that those who are complaining will still buy the thing they're complaining about.
Black Flag took place in the Carribean, an area with plenty of natives, culture and history, yet the protagonist was an english white guy. Revelations took place in the Ottoman Empire, a place rich with the history and culture of Byzantines and Turks, yet the protagonist was an italian guy. Were these OK with you? If so, what makes the previous instances not an issue but this one so offensive to you? Also you say the historical character being the protagonist as if this break from tradition was automatically bad. What's actually wrong with it? Yasuke's story is super interesting and has the potential to show feudal japan from a new perspective, since the "classic" samurai story (western with swords) was already done by Ghost of Tsushima.
Being nationalistic is soft? The japs clearly just want westerners to not profit off their history like how egypt sued the cleopatra documentary out of existence lul
Very rarely do I ever agree with EVERYTHING that a RUclipsr says, that is not the case here. I can’t even pick a time stamp bc for the first time imo the ENTIRE video is truth and definitely deserves more attention and views rn. Everyone seems to be so confused and completely ignorant to the actual problems one should have with this game but everyone is SO FOCUSED on the smallest shit that don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. When a character in your VIDEO GAME starts causing online wars by just being there, you know you did something right. Ubisoft are not angels but they did little wrong with the actual game this amount of hate is just unnecessary and indirectly showing peoples true colors and feelings.
I honestly hope ac shadows does better than suspected its a good blow to the snowflake community that is responsible for censorship and ruining games And maybe games never bow down to snowflakes again the very people complaining about wokeness and snowflakes are the snowflakes themselves lol
Someone calling themself degenerate and having a sensible take on this situation is ironic, but i fully agree For me i think ubisofts fanbase and used to be fans are tired of calling them out for their anti consumer pratices without changes happening so they just hop on another wagon
That's fair dude but why did the petition say it should just be outright cancelled? I think thats where the video was making a great point. Cancel isn't the same as fix. Now people are saying they just want it fixed? I don't get why the petition says cancel then.
Beyond unintentionally stealing some stuff, Ubi hasn't done anything to wrong your country. Your people misrepresent every other country, everyone seems to think all Americans weigh 500 pounds and eat mcdonalds all the time while portraying any depiction of the country as bad or in the wrong ways. Americans do not rise up in arms and call for your countries depictions to be canceled. This is what we like to call an EXTREME reaction to something that isn't an extreme. Use your brains.
It honestly seems like people who are really really deeply upset by this must not be having very difficult lives. Sometimes things will bother me a bit, but not enough to fly off the wheel and demand cancellation. That's just unstable.
Free speech should be championed, but when that free speech is about cultural & historical theft, appropriation, and caricaturization all in the name of corporate profit and virtue signaling - then no, it's no longer about "art" Also, let's be real, AC:Shadows is pretty racist - it's basically Asian Hate fantasized with Yasuke's "brutal" game mechanics playstyle in a setting that isn't really "Japan", but the caricaturization of random Asian elements mashed together
Similar caricaturization happened in previous games and, let's be honest, people only care this time because they have Japan boners. No one would care if it was a more obscure culture.
@@RedArc4Lif3 Again, "the Japanese" aren't a monolith. Meaning not everyone in Japan agrees on the same thing or cares, since you're too dumb to understand what I said before and too lazy to look it up. But keep tokenizing them to make your opinion seem stronger than it is - defending cultural values, my ass.
Yea nah no one seems to actually care to see what these folk are and about. They ain’t mad about yasuke being playable character they mad that ubisoft is stealing things, using the wrong architecture, and then stating yasuke was a real samurai and other things being changed that are being stated as a fact rather than labeled as fictional parts. Y’all mfs see headlines and shit and don’t actually do much research. They’re mad that Ubisoft is up to shady shit claiming that fictional scenarios their writers wrote are being labeled as facts and to have been historically accurate. Not to mention they’ve also somehow mixed up mandarin and Japanese kanji. Y’all go watch some channels that are actually pointing out the problems rather than an outsider to the problem.
What these folk are about is that their little feelings got hurt and now they want art cancelled. Japan basically became the hard left now on this issue.
It's almost as if you guys found a stronger argument against Ubisoft, that you're now clinging to, in order to rationalize post-hoc your initial instinctual anger after the first trailer dropped.
Other than the fact that he was samurai, were people this outraged over Leonardo helping Ezio or are people like you being selectively outraged because you have to play as a woman or black man
@@deservingcomplexionm8111 Auditore Villa (the mansion) doesn't exist in real life either and you even go there in Brotherhood's modern day. No one batted an eye about that. So much for people being mad at historical accuracy. It's all bs.
I’m pretty sure people are made at Ubisoft for stealing art. They stole a flag and they stole a katana from an anime called one piece. So people just don’t want to support theifs.
Some say its fake accounts and not Japan, but if it is Japanese people, this is hilarious after they got butthurt about Oppenheimer 😂 What happened to "Western Sensitivity?" Theyre no better i guess!
@@tsilentv9702 Said it elsewhere but I'll say it here too - Why should I care what Japan thinks of it any more than anyone else? We get games in historical or real world settings constantly in every country that are inaccurate or downright silly but nobody bats an eye. Why is this the straw that broke the camels back? How many times has Japan portrayed Western societies in completely inaccurate lenses, but we just let that fly? I just can't be bothered to care how they feel, unless they want to walk back every piece of media where they've done the same. They were even doing huge lipped black anime characters in the 80s and 90s. Nobody is going and trying to get that anime removed because it misrepresented a culture.
@@tsilentv9702 No it's a very good point. When has Japan ever held itself to a good standard in portraying other groups of people? Now they want to get mad someone is doing it to them? Sorry, but most people aren't going to take it seriously.
@@TheCondimonyKing-jo2xc The core problem isn't how It's portraited. It's about how the entire actual historical legendary Yasuke the black Samurai was fabricated and is being sold as a fact. Most Japanese people won't care how Japan is portraited as long as It's fictional. Even worse the guy who made up the story of Yasuke claimed without any source of proof that Japanese people wanted to enslave the black people While the Juist (who probably were the ones that enslaved them) didn't want to. So congrats to anybody whos fabricating not having slavery in their history.
@@gaku0000 Are you talking about Lockley? I am pretty sure there was historical evidence of Yasuke, but the issue is how far people want to believe that went. Even still, those arguing a game should just be cancelled come off very entitled to me.
@@teezoowazoo7272 Because its not only an insult to Japan but also the Black races. The story of the Black Samurai Yasuke which UBI claimed is historicaly true was actually a mostly fictional story created in 2014 by a british man named Thomas Rockly. He pretty much made a fanfic about how a Black man becoming one of the greatest Samurai in the History of Japan and sold it as true to History. And he also edited the Wiki with his story as reference to cover up the lies. I'm pretty sure there's a big difference between exaggerateing body features and fabricating other countrys History to sell your product.
You shouldn't. Yah Ubisoft higher ups are bad people. But that doesn't change the fact that probably hundreds of developers worked on this for 4 years or more and cancelling it would make all that pointless.
@@geypanis that's the sort of thing I'd worry about after laughing I do agree that art shouldn't be cancelled. I have no sympathy for Ubisoft but I have for players who might enjoy it. i cant wait for shadows ive waited for an assassins creed in feudal Japan, before anyone says yes I've played ghost of Tsushima and no shadows wont beat ghost of tsushima being my favorite game of all time and i am a bit disappointed in ubi for stealing and lying. but we do have an assassin in shadows her name is Noae (cant spell it sorry) Yasuke is basically the "distraction" hes out in the open and bringing the fight to the "templars" while Noae sneaks in and cuts off the head off the snake and by the time Yauske has gotten away the snake has already died and Noae is already long gone.
Same. If the game is bad on its own merits then we have a discussion. Rn we just have Japan (if it even is Japanese people really) upset about the portrayal of their history, but Japan has done this kind of thing with portraying others in untrue lights and stuff forever. I guess I don't get why it's different now that it's the west doing it, supposedly.
@@joeycondomony8098 For real Japan portrays Whites and blacks in a racist way in there anime’s but to us it’s funny we don’t care and to the Japanese who are mad man they have to be Japanese that don’t live in Japan they have there own games there own media, Culture, Shows, Celebrities & Hero’s there should be no need to have reputation from Western video games
@@teezoowazoo7272 its the same deal. Netflix advertising it as a historical documentary. Ubi is advertising shadows as historically accurate. Both are falsely advertising fiction as facts. Its not japan or Egypt who lied. Corporations want to falsely claim historical fiction but barely had any historical elements properly researched. Look at Yusuke, a black man made into a legend by a European prof and get told as true stories for almost a decade. If they don't see it and it fester to the point where the lie is told as fact, no history matters. Let's do hypothetical and say nazi needed to "cleanse" the world because the history is mixed so being jews being the bad guy and gassing the German population... see how that fiction is not a joke?? History isn't a joke. Its history. Its someone family. You tell lies about your family and see how your family punish you for that lie. If you made fiction, own it and saw its fiction. Simple. Netflix picked the wrong black pharaoh lol, because cleopatra was greek not black or indigenous Egyptian, and there was black indigenous Egyptian pharaohs and queens like queen tiye.
I've heard many opinions but i like yours the most plus you mentioned how ubisoft did this way before it was an issue and it seems people dont notice that
I can see where you're coming from about the hypocritical nature of this uprising, but I think it's still very much justified. The difference between Leonardo da vinci being suggested as gay and this new black character, is the context of the trends and politics at the time in the country. Nowadays, its an obvious pattern in movies, shows, commercials, music and games. Everyone is tired of these attempts to push an agenda that is so obviously political and forced, so focred that they dont even care that the writing is just terrible, and this goes for all media nowadays. That's the difference between Leo in Brotherhood, and Yasuke in Shadows. Leo in Brotherhood comes off as an interesting and odd character choice, and also apparently it's always been speculated that Leo was either bisexual or gay without any real evidence. At the time when the game came out, games were relatively kept away from political agendas, but now it's everywhere, in every kind of creative media, so blatant. I don't think it's necessarily Ubisoft who is the problem, it's the people who push for these agendas in all media, and having it bleed into an Assassin's Creed game just adds on to the rage and frustration. This attempt to cancel the game is probably a build up of anger from all other media being politicized and forced for the past couple of years. It's enough, and Assassin's Creed's left leaning choices are so blatant and shameless that, in the context of out current state as a country, politically, it's very much so not the same thing as Leonardo DaVinci being gay in Brotherhood. It's not the color of the skin of the sexual orientation, it's the context of the choices. It's so obviously an agenda it's cringe.
Should be cancelled, they went against their own golden rule, then went about boasting you could use the game to learn about Japanese culture etc, but then get so much wrong, buildings, way people act, the seasons in the game, and other things. But worst thing, they used a lie to base their game upon, then try to justify stealing art from people/groups and anime. They can redo it from the ground up, get proper historians to help them get it correct, with how Japan was at the time, with buildings and social classes
@@anhonestrussian7056 Muppet head. If one blatantly steal art from other creators, and lie that it's historically accurate, then it should be called out, and shut down
@@ekang9612 go for it..those that support your idea will buy into it..those that dont wont..theres already a system in place to show your dislike for something..petitions mean nothing.
It won't be cancelled. They spent way too much money and time developing it to throw it away. There are people, myself included, that will buy the game just to play and enjoy. No AC game has been 100 percent historically accurate
I'll be honest here, I don't mind that Ubisoft made one of the characters a black Samurai, when I read then what most of the gameplay was like and that it was set in Feudal Japan I just didn't really care because A. Assassins Creed is Historical Fiction, it takes historical events and adds a bit of fiction to them. There was a real life order of assassins that the Assassin Order is based on and took influence from, there are actual historical events that happened in each Assassins Creed game with a sprinkle of fiction that you can easily tell apart from the actual history. I think people have let politics become personal, and that is effecting everything down to even what is being released as games these days as game developers try to appeal with such views that diversity matters more then making a good well rounded well written character. And that can have a effect on the quality of the product being made. If you don't like it, don't buy it but don't try and ruin other peoples experience who actually may enjoy it.
While I can't deny that there is plenty of criticism towards Assassin's Creed Shadows that admittedly I do find to be silly, there's also plenty of criticism towards the game that I agree is warranted and justified. For starters, the so-called historical expert that Ubisoft Quebec used for insight about this game. As it turns out, she has a background in reading and learning about a certain "relationship" between Buddhist monks and young boys, if you catch my meaning. Secondly, there is the issue of the company stealing a flag from the Sekigahara Japanese reenactment group without their permission. Idk where Ubisoft got the idea that it was okay to commit theft, but they need to be held accountable for that. Third, and most recently, the news that the game stole Zoro's sword from One Piece and passed it off as Yasuke's sword in the game. How lazy can you be with your historical research that you have to resort to plagiarizing a weapon from an anime? And lastly, let's not forget the whole Collector's Edition debacle, in which Ubisoft did a piss-poor job in researching Kanji characters form the Japanese alphabet. This made a lot of Japanese people livid and upset, and I don't blame them. How did anyone at the company look at that and think that was fine? Now, will any of these polarizing acts from Ubisoft actually affect the quality of the game itself? Maybe, maybe not. We don't know for sure yet. But one thing is clear, and it's that all of these are signs of how far Ubisoft has fallen as a game company. The management over there needs a serious reboot and change in leadership.
I mean Jay did say that these things like screwing up the historical depiction of architecture and stealing art are the things they really deserve to be criticized for. He said it in this video and he even made a whole video dunking on Ubisofts treatment of the physical edition of the game. It just seems like most people don't watch the videos long enough to hear those points out and then get upset.
For the Japanese, samurai are equivalent to the main leaders of American independence. Ubisoft, in addition to offending a nation, was racist and xenophobic towards all Asians. just to score a point in the work culture.🙄
First of all cut that california wooe dei crap out. Yea the game made poor decisions but stop throwing out xenophobic and racist every time. You sound like a liberal and it pisses us off
This is why I prefer "create your own character" type games. That way, your character can look like what ever you want. Also, bonus: you avoid problems like this altogether. There's no worries if a gamer likes or dislikes what the main character looks like when it's essentially a self-insert you made yourself. That's one thing I did applaud Hogwarts for. Thank God you could make your own character in that game. Because let's face it...that poor game has had enough "controversy" around it and most of it (if not all) is over what I call big "nothing burgers". Anything the Hogwarts game is guilty of pales in comparison to crap others have pulled in the past.
I feel like the only problem I would have with that is if you customize your own character it won’t be like unique like they won’t feel special towards the storyline cause I feel in future games I’d want them to sort of do a call back towards yasuke or naoe and with a custom character I don’t think they would be important to the storyline im not saying that’s a bad option but I’m the type that cares about the storyline
The whole point of the petition is to ask Ubisoft to stop selling the narrative that their game is historically accurate when its not. It would be best if they could redo it to the AC level of historical accuracy with the tried and true local male protagonist. I have been a diehard fan since AC1. I think a key point of AC is historical accuracy and Shadows has none. Valhalla should've keep so many systems from Odyssey. Odyssey was my favorite game of all time. An Odyssey in Japan should've been a dream come true. I'm still gonna play it, but it isn't close to what it should've and could've been if they stuck to real historical accuracy and a local male protagonist. the tried and true formula that made AC perfect. We have no evidence that Yasuke was really a Samurai. It took Toyotomi Hideyoshi 10 years to become a Samurai and he unifed Japan. Yasuke is not recorded to have trained in Japanese martial arts. Yasuke does not have a surname. If Nobunaga made the only Black man in Japan at the time a Samurai, we would 100 percent have it recorded. As we do for Miura Anjin or William Adams the British Samurai who served under Tokugawa Eiyasu. The root of the problem is the British professor, Thomas Lockley that teaches English at Nihon University. He edited Yasukes Wikipedia several times and used his future book as a source. In this fabricated book, which is 400 pages long, he states that Yasuke was a Samurai and that slaves owning was popular in Japan at the time which is completely false. We only have about 1 paragraph on Yasuke between Nobunagas documents and the Jesuits documents. None of them state he was trained in Japanese martial arts or had a surname or was a Samurai but a low level bushi or retainer. If Yasuke was a Samurai, he wouldve protected Nobunaga at Honnoji Temple or died trying, rather than giving up his weapon and returning to the Jesuits like our documents state. Thomas Lockley advertised this book as nonfiction outside of Japan and fiction in Japan. Ubisoft obviously believed this fabrication and because of it couldn't get any real Japanese historians to work with them. Hence they added square tatami mats to what should've been rectangular or a wood floor, Nobunaga should be seated on an elevated platform from his servants, they should be sitting Indian style because kneeling started later in the Edo period and Yasuke should not be sitting on the lines of the tatami. Also, Torii gates are not the entrances to villages but the entrances to shinto shrines. Naoe and her father are shown burning incense at a Shinto Shrine but that is a Buddist tradition started later in the Edo period. Meanwhile you have cherry blossoms in bloom which is April, people planting rice and saying its a great harvest all in one several minute video. Also in the same video, Yasuke scatters a box of parcimines which is a fall fruit. What exactly about Japan did they research and who in there right mind would have the disrespect and Audacity to say you can learn history from this? Why did they buy things from Amazon for their expo both? Why is the sword they put on display Zoros sword from One Piece? I know, its because they googled Oda Sword and ran with it. sad. Oda Eichiro who wrote One Piece and Oda Nobunaga have different kanji for their names but in English they are spelled the same. This is a huge disrespect to Japanese history and culture. Why is it bad for a White cop to shoot infected African zombies in Resident Evil 5 and okay for Black Yasuke to brutalize Japanese and stomp on their heads in a very unsamurai like manner? Statically, Black on Asian crime is a real thing unlike white on black crime. Assassins Creed Shadows and Thomas Lockleys African Samurai are both being investigated and brought before Japanese Congress by Japanese senator Hamada Satoshi of the Anti-NHK party. Japan may sue like Eygpt sued Netflix for their black portaryal of Cleopatra. It is extremely offensive to revise another countrys history and sell it as historical fact. Especially in a series like AC that is famous for its historicall accuracy, so much so that the discovery tour is used in college courses, historians praise it, and Unity was used to rebuild the Notradam Cathedral. We Japanese are being accused of being racist for hiding the legendary black Samurai Yasuke, and for speaking out against revisionist history.
REDO it is a good point but that's not the same as cancelling it. The petition says it should outright be cancelled. They should have made a petition to just fix it.
@@ColonelCorrect-b8j no actually, the title say stop the sale, but the petition itself asks for a historically accurate redo. I am fluent/native in Japanese and read and signed this petition.

Thanks for making this video. I found it very insightful, annilitical, constructive and well reasoned. I agree with your main points fully. And I agree that if people don't like something and they wish to express it verbally then feel free as it isn't meant to be harmful, hateful prejudicial and flat out insulting cause that doesn't help or solve anything (personally I feel at least). But if you have a problem with something and you express it with a will reasoned argument more per to you. And I got the like button on your video.
It shouldnt be cancelled. If people are that mad and wont buy the game let see the sales after the game comes out. It also doesnt make sense lore wise when AC told you since the first game they could do stuff like this. If you dont know what I mean just search up the talks between vidic and desmond on ac1. So I dont think real fans want it cancelled since we all know, its just grifters taking advantage of the situation to make money and voice their horrible opinion over a franchise they have been calling trash for decades.
Great video! By the way, with how the Brotherhood DLC hints at Leo being gay, in real life, Leo was actually arrested, along with 4 other men, for sodomy, including a male prostitute. He was discharged due to the lack of enough evidence, so since the 16th century, people have thought of the possibility of him being gay, but he may not have been. There just have been clues that he might have, which seems to be continued in Brotherhood too. This is a historical thing, and Ubisoft added it in for that historical aspect or to add more to Leo's mysterious character.
Connor is native to the U.S. though and is sort of like a Django style plot that fits the country's history, culture, and political issues of the time. Yasuke is a completely ridiculous story that might be loosely based on a very unusual and barely documented historical event.
The backlash was a combination of two factors. 1/ The Japanese fans got butthurt when the first AC game that’s finally covering their home country history is glorifying the legacy of the one person who was originally just a Retainer/Japanese Squire for the sake of an entertaining game. 2/ The majority of dissatisfied fans are just disappointed that the Japanese Assassin’s Creed game wasn’t the matching the exact vision of the game that they envisioned for themselves since the idea for an Japanese Assassin’s Creed game first started circulating online over a decade ago.. IMO I’m just glad that the game was able to get made at all & hope that these internet trolls don’t deter Ubisoft & other Game Publishers mainstream or otherwise from making anymore attempts at any Japanese themed games..
I saw a post that said mostly Japan was upset over this idk if it’s true didn’t bother to look into it too much but considering they appreciated Ghost of Tsushima I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually do hate the portrayal in shadows

I'm pretty sure this petition isn't about Yasuke. I'll have to translate it it's a Japanese petition and I can't argue with that and I don't think it's our place to argue that either. The Japanese take their culture, history and heritage very seriously unlike us in the west do, we're not that passionate anymore about our heritage or see it as seriously but it's each to their own. Even Japanese politicians arnt keen on AC shadows because of the way it butchers their history and heritage, its not solely based around Yasuke while I won't disagree he definitely adds a factor for some out cry amongst Japanese nationals and western nationals, the western nationals not really having any right to argue the case as its not our history to argue over.
It feels like a lot of this is just self-victimization on the part of Japan and the weirdos who think they're part of Japan from across the ocean - mainly grifters.
@@takanokaiyu9348 Japan never thought they needed to know more about Black people before they drew them as huge lipped stupid individuals in anime and manga. Japan has no right to dictate people should treat their history with more care than they treated the history and representation of others. They now are experiencing how others felt when their own creators did similar. I'm just not sympathetic.
Most of discussion ive heard recently is about the non-Yasuke stuff. I'd prefer real people weren't player characters in AC games. At this point it would make sense for them to be created by the player. Either way i won't be buying it because I don't like the gameplay of the RPGs
The Japanese are pissed because Ubisoft claimed it was historically accurate. There was never was. Yasuke real history was only mention a few words. He was never a samurai. That was all made up by Thomas lockley to promote his fictional book. Thomas lockley was also caught changing Wikipedia on yasuke real history claiming he was a samurai. And Thomas lockley also had meetings with ubisoft as well for this game.
Imagine this. The game takes place in an African kingdom. In the history book of this kingdom, there are only a few lines about a white servant. This white man was brought from a foreign country as a slave. The king bought this slave and he served as the king's baggage handler for about a year. There are few records of this white man and no record of him being particularly active. Now, the game developers decided to make this white man the hero as a legendary warrior. As the white protagonist, dressed in kingly armor, walks through the village, the shabby black natives bow in respect to him. Then he slaughters the black warriors one after another with his club. The white hero crushes the heads of the black warriors. The black villagers, seeing this, bow in his honor. The depiction of buildings and nature in the game is often inaccurate. And the game's developers have made this known to the world.” We based our game on historical facts.” Now, blacks in the African kingdom found the game offensive and protested. The game developers and their supporters called them racists. The legendary white warriors are facts! Are you kidding? By the way, remember Resident Evil 5?
Yeah, I remember Resident Evil 5 and Far Cry 2 and how those two games are pretty much your hypothetical scenario so you don't have the gotcha moment you thought you had.
Absolutely NOT, that is completely disgusting to the people who worked hard on this game, and also I bet 90% of those people arent even Japanese people.
I have some things to share about the cancellation. I understand why people want the game to be cancelled. Yes, AC Shadows isn't 100% historically accurate, such as Yasuke being a samurai instead of a servant or retainer (I'm pretty sure), and not being true to Japanese culture. Yes, the country of Japan is livid at Ubisoft for what they've done, hence the investigation the Japanese government is conducting. But to go so far as to start a petition to cancel a game, or work of art as Jay put it, is just absurd. There's games out there that I don't like for whatever reason. I've never felt the need to get it cancelled. As for myself, I'm willing to give the game a chance. The game should have a chance to be good, and hopefully have well written characters. Jay pointed this out in the video. If the character is well written, I don't care. The game won't be cancelled. The game is not going to make everyone happy. That's how art is. It's subjective. Fans are allowed to not like the game. They are allowed to voice their thoughts and opinions about AC Shadows. BUT, it's not fair to those, like myself, who are still interested in the game despite the controversies. I'm not saying I support any agendas or the woke nature of the gaming industry. What I AM saying is this: if you want to play the game, then buy it. If not, save your money. I have more to say, but I'll end it there.
The statement by Mr. Lockley that "Japan popularized black slavery" is the worst historical revisionism in world history. The legal code "Goseibai Shikimoku," established in the Kamakura period in 1232, set forth the following provisions: the prohibition of human trafficking and the requirement to free slaves within a certain period. Since then, there have been no slaves in Japan.
@@petrri323 If, as Mr. Lockley claims, the slave trade was conducted in Japan, it would mean that ships would have to carry only people and water/food on the outbound journey, foregoing all trading opportunities along the way. This implies that Japan would have had to buy slaves at a significantly high price for the trade to be profitable. It's clearly unnatural that such a lucrative business wouldn't have been the talk of any nation. What about reports? The fact that there are no documents answering this question is inconsistent with Mr. Lockley's claims, especially when there are plenty of records about the Atlantic slave trade. The story that Japanese feudal lords boasted about having black slaves also raises questions, as there is no mention of "who" these lords were. If such evidence exists, Mr. Lockley and Mr. Atkinson have the responsibility to explain it.
I dont care the main character being african samurai. Things i care, fun gameplay, cool animations, cool outfits and weapons, innovate way of move tru the world, good combat and cool world design. Things i dont like live service, because i travel a lot, and i dont always have internet services available where i go.
But it was also number one on Amazon Japan for the PS5 ( best seller ) so there are Japanese people that want the game. We have to understand that Japan is not a hive mind and that there are Japanese people that do want this game. The question now is do the Japanese , that want the game, opinions matter?
I've said this under 4 comments and I'm looking for a legitimate answer on it when it comes to Japan's feelings on this matter - Why should I care what Japan thinks of it any more than anyone else? We get games in historical or real world settings constantly in every country that are inaccurate or downright silly but nobody bats an eye. Why is this the straw that broke the camels back? How many times has Japan portrayed Western societies in completely inaccurate lenses, but we just let that fly? I just can't be bothered to care how they feel, unless they want to walk back every piece of media where they've done the same. They were even doing huge lipped black anime characters in the 80s and 90s. Nobody is going and trying to get that anime removed because it misrepresented a culture.
Well we now know that the guy who came out with the story about Yasuke being a samurai was lying and it was all fake. And Ubisoft payed him and went along with it. They definitely dropped the ball on this one, no surprise, seems to be a common theme for Ubisoft lately. They’re disrespecting Japan culture, no doubt, and to add insult to injury, Yasuke is bi-sexual in the game with potential bi-sexual side quest. Is this even a samurai character anymore or some woke agenda propaganda. Players definitely need this game to be fixed or just boycott it.
Great video Jay and I glad you did give Alex a callout at the beginning of the video and I don’t think the petition will work and Jay I agree with you canceling art is never a good thing it is what bad groups in history did and ac was never historically accurate so I don’t understand why certain people care so much now and Jay I sorry what you go through with the Tim Drake stuff a couple of years ago and certain people believe you can’t have your own opinion and I agree Ubisoft is making so many bad decisions about this game that has nothing to do with Yasuke and there is a Japanese character in this game that some people will want to play as so these people can’t complain about no Japanese character in this game
Honestly after reading up on the guy (sorry can’t remember on how to spell his name correctly) I am interested to see his story and hope they add some real life facts to it. He was an actual samurai and was actually known as one of the most badass ones that had such high honors to where he would even dine with lords. Could they have done someone else yes but honestly I’m glad I get to somewhat learn something about a person that I never knew of before. This is probably wholeness done right as it’s not shoving the idea down someone’s thought just cause because there is actual backing to it. Like I said actually do research yourself but love the points you made an d honestly I am excited to see what happens cause I love the assassins creed games in general cause of their lore and story. Ofc I don’t like something’s but hey I’m always interested to see what comes next
I'm a little disappointed AC Shadows is being pushed back, but if we can get a better experience, I am all for it. One cool thing is prior to this game, I never heard of Yasuke. The game prompted me to read a little about him & Japanese history.
Been showing them since unity. Fck what everybody else is talking about, are they gonna use motion capture and is the combat gonna be good? Probably not
I get when people get upset over forced stuff, but as someone who is black and gay it does sadden me when there is so much backlash seemingly at the sight of anything representing me, but it is what it is, people have a right to voice their opinion, I just choose to buy or play something I would never say to cancel
The issue I have is that I’ve been looking forward to an AC game in this setting for so long.. Playing as a character who’s not exactly inconspicuous being the only black guy in Japan towering over the local population, it doesn’t exactly fit the sneaky assassin capable of blending into the crowd. I’d be equally frustrated if it was a white guy like myself.. it brakes the immersion. I’d be more than happy to play a black gay guy in an African setting, or a more modern Western setting, but in this setting, I don’t think it’s asking much to want to play a Japanese samurai/ninja assassin.🙂
@thequestionable1413 I don't bro. being gay concerned normal now. So why yall gotta bring it up on every argument like do yall want a Medal or a Cookie for being gay?
@sirharoldcat being a gay black guy in an African setting is as unrealistic as being a black samurai in feudal japan. Africa isn't as welcoming to being gay as the west. If I'm African....
The Yasuke i can see people don't like thats fair enough but haveing him be playable as a bit of a stretch considering that the end of his story is already written so unless they have him save his lord which is doubtful he'll either be carted off or dead by the end of the game which will leave you with the assassin which is what ubisoft wanted all along.

@@cosygoose1813 Okay then allow me to ask this what exactly is it about the release trailers that is considered to be offensive to the Japanese culture. Because having a black samurai in the game is not racially offensive or culturally offensive considering that the character Sasuke actually did live in Japan at one time.He loved during the Sengok period under the shogun nobunaga. He was a samurai during 1581 to 1582 which was the year of nobunaga's downfall. So again I ask you what exactly is so culturally insensitive or inappropriate towards Japanese culture regarding these videos. If I message silence hostile I'm not trying to be in merely asking.
@@robertkyllonen944The fact he wasn't a samurai and that its their culture their are changing. They are from Japan they can do what they want with their character but assassin's creed is made by ubisoft not a Japanese company. So they just grapped a black servant to avoid picking a real samurai so mkre Americans will play it. As they clearly do not respect the culture enough to be accurate. If you make a game about someone elses culture it can be inspired, in which case no real names or accurate. You can Change certain things to make a plot but not just grabing a random black guy and changing his history. God of war for example is about a dead religion that is well known so its not being disrespectful as the world literally ends. Thats mythology which is different altogether. Using a character like Jesus then you better be respectful of that religion. Yasuke can be played to like guys or girls but considering that we actually have no records of his love life they are just taking a dead guy and changing his sexuality to fit gameplay.
@@cosygoose1813 to be perfectly honest I think you're being far too opinionated about the entire issue. I mean there were conversations in assassin's Creed Valhalla to where the male character Eivor

Since we don't know what sexuality this individual was they have a little wiggle room to just play with it fictionally. I sincerely believe that you're just reading way too much into this and it's not worth all of this additional stress over the game. Plus also yosuke wasn't just a simple servant he actually was a samurai during the time in which she lived he just wasn't as active as commonly known for other more famous samurai by comparison
AC fans when the alternate history game series has alternate history in it (theyve turned an earthquake that killed thousands into accidental assassin terrorism, made fictional gods and monsters real, had you attempt to kill the pope, and underwrote connor to focus on his white dad)
When it comes to the historical accuracy argument for shadows, I’ve heard that most are upset about it because Ubisoft themselves said that we can “experience real history” with this title but discovered that they used elements that were not accurate like using a flag for the Japanese rifle corps without permission and using a replica of Zoro’s sword from one piece and saying it’s yasuke’s sword and that the inspiration for yasuke as a legendary samurai was a fictional story written. I can understand why people are upset about it but honestly, if they do the story right and it’s a good written story then who cares?
I don't think it matters in the end because the quality of the game will be the deciding factor in the end along with the characters and it is apparent that Yasuke has some kind of significance in Japanese history due to him being in multiple parts of Japanese media and artwork so using him in a game that is known to take creative liberties isn't much of a problem especially since beloved games like Ghost of Tsushima had many inaccuracy but was still loved. I think the game should be judged by its quality in story telling, characters, and gameplay because that is the purpose of a game and that will be what people will always come back to.
Well said! As long as I get to be an assassin with the typical assassin traits in a historic location I'm happy. I want to just relax and explore/experience historic locations (even if they aren't 100% accurate) whilst getting to understand the characters and story within the game.

People have been upset about the price and the mandatory connexion, but it had been overflowed by the Yasuke thing.... And about historical inaccuracies.... well, it's really common in the series. The Virgen María de la Concepción Inmaculada Cathedral in La Havana didn't exist during the Pirate Age of Black Flag. The french national flag didn't exist until 1794 and the street names before the 19's but are still in Unity. Greek architecture was full of bright and flashy colors and they don't put it in Odyssey. And Valhalla is a festival of bullshit in every way, especially on the scandinavian side. And I could continue the list... I haven't see any "national" outrage or petition against that. (well, that's not exactly true, there was a political outrage against Unity in France, about the way Robespierre was described...). If all of those people really cared and it was just about inaccuracies and "disrespect" for the culture, they would scream against all of the series. You can discuss that. You can also absolutly critize the art scrapping problem. It's a very valid problem. But the way it's done by the online mob makes it inaudible. It just looks as if they searching for anything to add to their anger... Anyway, all the racist stuff made them forget to be sexist (even if forgetting that Naoe exists and is the japanese Assassin shinobi we were expecting is also sexism, but anyway...). And it really funny to me that people think a petition, even with thousands of signatures, could make Ubisoft purely cancel a game that must have cost them something like 200 or 300 millions dollars to do. ps : I apologize for my english, not my native language ;_;

@@cylon_aspect6474We don't care. 🎉

If so, what makes the previous instances not an issue but this one so offensive to you?
Also you say the historical character being the protagonist as if this break from tradition was automatically bad. What's actually wrong with it?

hi Jay

Wait is that Zoro sword thing true because if so that’s fucking embarrassing.

Short answer yes
And the game's developers have made this known to the world.” We based our game on historical facts.”
Now, blacks in the African kingdom found the game offensive and protested. The game developers and their supporters called them racists. The legendary white warriors are facts!

Since then, there have been no slaves in Japan.
there have been slaves in Japan after that time. Wtf is this take?
@@petrri323 Some people just love Japan so much because they're weebs with no personal identity.
Japan is still racist towards darker skinned people to this day...
I could be wrong, but I heard that a lot of Japanese people were offered by it.
But it was also number one on Amazon Japan for the PS5 ( best seller ) so there are Japanese people that want the game. We have to understand that Japan is not a hive mind and that there are Japanese people that do want this game. The question now is do the Japanese , that want the game, opinions matter?
@@od4831yeah everyone ignored that
I've said this under 4 comments and I'm looking for a legitimate answer on it when it comes to Japan's feelings on this matter - Why should I care what Japan thinks of it any more than anyone else?

Yes it should
Great video Jay and I glad you did give Alex a callout at the beginning of the video and I don’t think the petition will work and Jay I agree with you canceling art is never a good thing it is what bad groups in history did and ac was never historically accurate so I don’t understand why certain people care so much now and Jay I sorry what you go through with the Tim Drake stuff a couple of years ago and certain people believe you can’t have your own opinion and I agree Ubisoft is making so many bad decisions about this game that has nothing to do with Yasuke and there is a Japanese character in this game that some people will want to play as so these people can’t complain about no Japanese character in this game
Ppl need to stop whining and complaining like babies if you don’t like the game don’t buy it, show Ubisoft with your wallet
What does you being gay gotta do with your argument, brother???
@@degisndinga8853 I'm gay too why do you hate me
The issue I have is that I’ve been looking forward to an AC game in this setting for so long..
This makes nosence people truly need to grow up it's a video game if you don't like it don't buy it
@@takanokaiyu9348Where did they falsely claim he for sure was? All these games have a paragraph long disclaimer at the beginning saying they’re basically fiction based on some history made by a ton of people into a story.
Battlefield 5 is a videogame too, and speaking of which, that part where you said “if you don’t like it don’t buy it” is very similar to what EA said in response to the backlash Battlefield 5 was receiving, and you know what happened.

Tell that to the angry japanese country to the point where the Japanese government is investigating the game
The Japanese government should be investigating their own people first. They literally have anime artists depicting people with childrens bodies in pedophilic ways but seem to not care about that... but this is an issue? What? Like what are they doing over there lol?

Also it's just a game, with the DISPLAYED DISCLAIMER that the story takes place during historical event, BUT is still FICTION.
Then its cultural appropriation, you can have Japan be a inspiration but not the setting. If you want to use Japanese culture then you have to be accurate or atleast respectful. As its not your country.
What also bounced back and forth between either a homosexual relationship or a heterosexual relationship and since there's no definitive research on which way the character yasuke leaned it's not as if ubisoft's actually being insulting to the historical figure itself.
So many people not buying this over this game for stupid reasons meanwhile im not buying because it looks like garbage.
AC fans when the alternate history game series has alternate history in it (theyve turned an earthquake that killed thousands into accidental assassin terrorism, made fictional gods and monsters real, had you attempt to kill the pope, and underwrote connor to focus on his white dad)
Do you blame the fans for being angry?
When it comes to the historical accuracy argument for shadows, I’ve heard that most are upset about it because Ubisoft themselves said that we can “experience real history” with this title but discovered that they used elements that were not accurate like using a flag for the Japanese rifle corps without permission and using a replica of Zoro’s sword from one piece and saying it’s yasuke’s sword and that the inspiration for yasuke as a legendary samurai was a fictional story written. I can understand why people are upset about it but honestly, if they do the story right and it’s a good written story then who cares?
Literally everyone
why are they still speaking english... if you are gonna make an game about the culture, a least research their language
People want rocksteady canceled cause robin miss genders Harley Quinn

Bro they literally tooks Zoro sword and claim it that is Yasuke sword. How much you gaslighting us claiming that we were yapping over nothing. this wouldn't be a problem if they claim it is just fiction in the first place but NO. Ubi had to posted a video claiming that is historical Accurate when many japanese gamers and japanese historical expert claiming is not. You know what they get. getting blocked.
That's actually dumb though and that's where he said in the video that Ubisoft should be mocked for art theft. Did you not watch the whole thing?
I’m with ya on the whole “only eradicate art promoting actual evil” thing. Though, a part of me feels like that some extreme weirdos out there will just use it as an excuse to call for AC Shadows cancellation cause of the whole “white replacement” conspiracy going around.
A black samurai broke the gaming community 😂
If ubisoft wanted to actually use a real samurai there are many thought Japanese history they could have pull from. For example Sasaki Kojirō or even Miyamoto Musashi
People have been upset about the price and the mandatory connexion, but it had been overflowed by the Yasuke thing....
And about historical inaccuracies.... well, it's really common in the series. The Virgen María de la Concepción Inmaculada Cathedral in La Havana didn't exist during the Pirate Age of Black Flag. The french national flag didn't exist until 1794 and the street names before the 19's but are still in Unity. Greek architecture was full of bright and flashy colors and they don't put it in Odyssey. And Valhalla is a festival of bullshit in every way, especially on the scandinavian side. And I could continue the list... I haven't see any "national" outrage or petition against that. (well, that's not exactly true, there was a political outrage against Unity in France, about the way Robespierre was described...). If all of those people really cared and it was just about inaccuracies and "disrespect" for the culture, they would scream against all of the series.
You can discuss that. You can also absolutly critize the art scrapping problem. It's a very valid problem. But the way it's done by the online mob makes it inaudible. It just looks as if they searching for anything to add to their anger...
Anyway, all the racist stuff made them forget to be sexist (even if forgetting that Naoe exists and is the japanese Assassin shinobi we were expecting is also sexism, but anyway...). And it really funny to me that people think a petition, even with thousands of signatures, could make Ubisoft purely cancel a game that must have cost them something like 200 or 300 millions dollars to do.
