The first time, I've listened to this music was on spotify and when I heard at 6:23, I've pushed the "like" button. Eventually that was Sonny Stitt on the sunny side of the street ! Thanks Chris for this presentation.
Maaaan. I love the Sunny Side album. Love this competition format. Actually remember watching this way back in quarantine 😂now rewatching in better times. 2 legends. Sonny Stitt should be a household name. Ugh such a great record.
Haha, thank you for the views! Completely agree, this album is incredible! Stitt was so polished on this album, Rollins was in his prime, Dizzy was already a living legend. So great, take care! 😁🙌
Man, Chris, great video as always. Stitt is amazing, but Rollins I think just speaks to me on another level. The way he develops motives grips me more as a listener. I actually was fortunate to see Sonny Rollins play 10 years ago. It was pretty fun for me who had just graduated high school!
Jamie, dude, thanks so much! I'm right there with you, I love both the Sonnys but they definitely influenced me at different parts of my life. Undoubtedly they have influenced so many players that we continue to listen to. 😁🙌🏼
I discovered Sonny Stitt by accident. Was looking for some fast paced bebop jazz on blue note and i was struggling to find any l found what i was looking for when I discovered Dizzy Gillespie Stan Getz, duets and for musicians only. Then I discovered Sonny stitt new york jazz and I'm now hooked.
This is the video I have been waiting for! I think it would be great to make a video on creating long bebop lines (simmilar to Stitt's extremly long lines)?
@@KenyonCarter Hi, Yes! I checked it out but the package is to big to carry (I live in Serbia and my friend who is from America says he can't bring the whole thing). How big is it actually (I'm judging from pictures)?
Dude I just found your channel and I love your style! I got my masters degree in oboe performance and I really struggle with how to approach jazz with the saxophone now and how to listen and learn in an open, positive way. Going from being a “master” of oboe to a novice saxophonist is sometimes a struggle. Thanks for the positivity!
Dude thank you so much for the kind words! Do you play any jazz in the oboe? I'm thinking of doing a video on how to listen to jazz. Love the approach of analysis here; would be cool if you did this again over the same tune for different players (albeit unlikely on the same actual track!)
Just heard this - it is really eye opening to hear how very different Sonny is playing this, compared to how Sonny played! Seriously, this is a nice way to "hear them new".
I can't believe I JUST discovered your channel. Awesome, awesome solid content! What's that great looking set up I see in the back? Is that a KB sax neck? Cheers!
Hey thanks! You're awesome! 😁🙌🏼 behind me is just my small studio space with a bunch of inspiration, some legends, some art from my daughter and others. And yes! Good eye, it is a KB neck, Redwood model HH copper, absolutely love and Kim is such an amazing human being. Appreciate your support!
This album is fantastic, I think they both bring something to the table. It be interesting to do a comparison of solos on the Tenor Conclave album: John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, and Zoot Sims, particularly Comrtane and Sims trading back and forth.
I love this album. (Rollins commanded higher prices and eventually stayed clear of the Chicago tuff tenor battles with Stitt, Jug, Moody, Dexter, Jaws, etc.) Another useful entrance to this recording is Roberta Gambarini's vocalese version. She sings all 3 solos, bringing in the track at the exact same time as the original. -- I love the pure yet embodied sound of Stitt and his clean, masterful articulations (also, Stitt's the underdog, all the more on tenor, because he's so often identified with alto). He may be the underdog but that doesn't mean he can't be top dog.
First off, thanks for your thoughts, always appreciated 😁🙌 I need to check out that vocalese track, sounds incredible. I never thought of Stitt as an underdog so I found that really interesting. You're right, he is more recognized as an alto player, especially early in his career. I think he's one of the only players that successfully played both horns and developed their own sound. Nowadays there are more players doing it successfully (Vincent Herring, Jeff Coffin, Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, etc). You really can't beat that articulation, such a master at that, so clean, even on the most uptempo tunes. Eternal triangle review is coming! Thanks again, take care!
This track is incredibly legendary, it still blows my mind. Imagine what it would be like sitting in the studio to this. For me Sonny Rollins takes it decisively in the last round with that incredible triplet line. Gotta be 10-8 for me for round 4. I also judge 10-9 in favor of Rollins for the bridge, but very close. I'm definitely biased though, having transcribed so much Rollins and him being probably #2 or #3 in the list of my biggest inspirations. You gotta do the same break down of The Eternal Triangle now too!
Oh man, Eternal Triangle will be a beast but I think I can make that happen! Yes Rollins is 1 or 2 for me in regards to influence. I could imagine being in that studio and watching all this magic happen live. Looks like the crowd favorite might be Rollins 😁🙌🏼
"The classic II V I". I never liked how stitt did "ta dum" to the tonic. He did it all the time. One of my favorite albums is "you talk that talk". Stitt great on that.
Thanks Wayne! Both are masters, just trying to show the difference in their approach to standards in a fun way. Def not trying to be disrespectful in any way. Sorry if it came off that way to you. Take care 😁🙌🏼
Neither is actually better than the other, both masters but so different. Love them both for different attributes. I've heard both these masters in person and actually met and spent some time with Sonny Stitt on a couple of occassions. It can only be a personal choice call but on this track I give Mr Stitt the edge.
Agreed not judging who was better here because both are amazing and have influenced and continue to influence so many musicians around the world. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Take care 😁🙌🏼
@@positivelyprogressing Absolutely, I was a very young altoist when I met Sonny Stitt, your probably aware that he had a reputation for being difficult and harsh at times. I can honestly say that he was increadibly gracious and very encouraging with me taking a lot of time to explain a few things and generally really good natured. He was hell of a player. Live he was absolutely amazing. I remember him playing cherokee at a ridiculous tempo - well over 340. He played chorus after chorus of fabulous lines that just had me in complete awe. His blues playing up tempo on tenor was tremendous too, such drive with those half diminished lines that seemed to soar into the stratosphere. He had such a great command of time and dynamics. Mr Rollins was extraordinary too.
That is very cool, thank you so much for sharing. I find as time goes by there are less and less of these stories to share, so I appreciate that greatly.
@@positivelyprogressing Thanks, no problem, I have much more to share regarding Sonny Stitt and a few other greats I got to spend a bit of time with but I've got to get some wood shedding done. Thanks for your excellent comparison idea, funnily enough I loved the boxing analogy as I gave up boxing in my late teens to protect my mouth and hands as I was getting more serious about playing my horn.
BOXING STYLE! just we need to compare two great players! I’m glad that your little child had whatever primitive reaction to this music that my cats did. One of my cats digs Mingus, isn’t that cute?
I like Sonny Rollins. I'm not a big Bee Bop fan it cool but at some point all the rapid fire notes me nothing to me they have no feeling. I rather hear some one playing swing.
I respectfully disagree. I also think that this thing of rating and weighting everything, every nuance, specially in music, is futile and even could be dangarous (after all nor Rollins nor Stitt are in need of "win" any audition or something), but ok, just for fun: If you only rate perfection of execution, raw technique, clarity, "be bop licks"..., maybe Stitt could get the points here but, if you take in account CREATIVITY, surprise, courage, taking risks, exploration, no fear to fail...no way man, it is a knockout, Sonny "rules" since phrase one. I love Stitt too but you almost could say they are in different "weight categories". And Bach, of course drank of their predecessors, so Stitt and Rollins (and everyone) drank for Bird both. But Bach relentelessly explored different ways, different forms, created a lot of new language, wich puts Rollins a lot closer to him than Stitt, IMHO. (and, if we are going there, how many standards composed by Lone Wolf can you name, and how many from Newk?) Everybody has his own likes, true. Nice work anyways, keep on it please, but please remember that, in spite of Whiplash movie, and friendly competition apart, jazz is not professional sports. Postscript: The fact is that one guy played his solo after the other, wich bias the "match". To be totally fair game, both sonnys must play his solos in isolation, wich is somewhat absurd, or both AT SAME TIME, wich would be funny;)
Thanks for the comment, very thoughtful and well presented. I enjoyed reading it! This is all fun and I don’t consider either of them to be “better” than the other just wanted to get people actively listening to these two legends and how they approach and shape their solos.
