Full replay from the ExCeL - North Arena 2 as Kayla Harrison (USA) defeats Gemma Gibbons (GBR) to win gold in the women's judo -78kg event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (2 August 2012).
Judo made its very first appearance at the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo. However, it was not included in the Olympic programme in 1968 in Mexico City, but returned, never to leave again, at the 1972 Games in Munich. As for women's judo, it was added to the Games in 1992 in Barcelona.
Men and women now compete in seven weight categories. There was originally a men's category open to all weights, but this event was withdrawn after the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.

THAT must be seriously painful. The actual throws probably don't hurt, like that, but I'm not a judo knowledgeable person. Plus the training and stamina. One thing about Gibbons. Her hips are positioned too far away to take on her American opponent. If a judoka has to grapple, standing up, why would she want to 'bridge' space to spam an attempt?

Only if you have not been drilling breakfalls in training. Then getting thrown onto a Judo or MMA surface is no big deal. Different story if it is concrete or asphalt but never seen MMA done on a road. Roger's original point is very valid. Judo is only a 5th of the skills you need for MMA. Punching, Kicking, Throwing, Grappling, Ground and pound. Judo only really covers the throwing element. They do a little grappling but weak sauce compared to BJJ or catch as catch can wrestling.
