Full replay from the ExCeL - North Arena 2 as Kayla Harrison (USA) defeats Gemma Gibbons (GBR) to win gold in the women's judo -78kg event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (2 August 2012).
Judo made its very first appearance at the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo. However, it was not included in the Olympic programme in 1968 in Mexico City, but returned, never to leave again, at the 1972 Games in Munich. As for women's judo, it was added to the Games in 1992 in Barcelona.
Men and women now compete in seven weight categories. There was originally a men's category open to all weights, but this event was withdrawn after the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.

And then 4-years later, she would win gold in Rio, proclaiming she is still QUEEN OF THE MAT!!!
I knew her from college
Lol best punishment ever! poor murr! Or not poor murr
Lol poor murr!
Literally the only reason I’m watching this Judo match. Murr stood no chance at taking her down 🤣🤣🤣
Best part was the throw into the table with all the water cups.
Lmao
You could tell by the look in their eyes before the match who was going to win.
Yup. British girl just looked shook
@@vincentstark7093 huh the British girl looked more calm. Kayla looked nervous
So you mean the one smacking her lips like a coke fiend was who you picked to win?
@@historyiwitness5915if you ask me that’s a valid way to see who wants it more.
Brilliant sportsmanship! Always nice to see competitors share the glory at the end and come out smiling, because when it all comes down to it everyone is lucky enough just to be there and compete, let alone win a medal, and Kayla and Gemma definitely deserve them.
The coach yelling "Hey! Kayla!" every few seconds can't be but a distraction.
Jimmie coached her accurately sorry to say and she listened well. His instructions during the final minute was actually spot on.
Coach knows her more than u do.
More of a distraction than the PEDs she's on? Coin toss
@@historyiwitness5915 word
I like how USA focused on using Harai goshi. Like my sensei said "dont fear a man who practices million moves, fear a man who practice a single move a million times.
That's fron Bruce Lee originally
@@lMobiuscidl With modification as when rice said it he said a thousand times instead of a million.
All high level Judo practitioners will usually use a small amount of moves to win or dominate a fight…
@@DoomsdayIsComing73 fr, as long as you perfect the execution, everything will fall.
@@Babideeee sensei always used to tell us that if you “master the basics” you can win any fight! 👊🏼👊🏼Judo is such an underrated art, and I think many high level grapplers are starting to realize that Judo is a fantastic compliment to BJJ, and vice versa. I’m seeing a lot of young up and coming fighters here in Texas flocking to Judo gyms..
Kayla is really inspirational as an athlete and as a person! She's overcome so much! I think she's my new favorite Judoka.
I cried for four hours after this.
Thank you for the Gold in 2012 and Gold in 2016.
You will be remembered and loved FOREVER in American Judo!
God bless you, Sister!
I thought they said ahe won silver?? So did she win a gold metal here or silver

Gold.

She's doing well in MMA also.
She is UFC star now
This was a year ago and still seems like yesterday. My family and I were in the stands when Kayla won. We will never forget this and neither will she. Gemma put up a heck of a fight but that French girl wore her down.
she's American son. whupping redcoat asses yet again. An American tradition.
Great fight, looking forward to Kayla fighting in Rio!
And she did it again!
This match made me genuinely emotional.
A riveting match! Just a great fight from both of them!
Gemma Gibbons semi final was her moment. I guess she lost all her energy there.
if you know anything about judo Kayla was dominating here oppenent constantly
Loudest voice in the building? Pedro.
I watched this video after I heard about her argueing with Henry Cejudo about gold medals lol
She’s also an MMA fighter , no WAY
mama bear with cubs. It was only 2-0, but it seemed like a mauling. She is so strong and aggressive, always going for a throw.
Michael phelps
How did she make 136 to fight Holly Holm
Jimmy Pedro taught a very good student.
kaylas confidence and inner belief in herself is so amazing. the mind can do anythinfb
That is really sad. I feel bad for her. Gemma's own countrymen are cheering for Kayla. 😢
She is in mma now she's a beast
UFC champion coming soon
Harrison seemed to be so much more aggressive than Gibbons.
I feel like gibbons was tired and saving her energy for the last few seconds
Très beau combat de Kayla.
Valid effort by these two gentlemen.
great hand fighting and grip fighting tho
Congratulations Kayla .🎉🎉😊
I love the story behind both of these ladies and the obstacles both had to overcome in their personal lives just to get where they were. Both were deserving Gold medal winners but Harrison was able to find an extra gear when it was needed.. Beautiful ladies judoka
Way to represent Kayla !!!
This is emotional 😭 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
What a career
Is there like only one move in judo?
i love the two asians taking their photos at the end 🤣
This woman will rise to the top of the UFC
Some are already saying shes the best female fighter in the world.
She so far ahead....she made easy work of silver medalist........and that 2 sec on the mat....where she realised what she has done...
The British girl made the mistake of always putting herself in a vulnerable position for the
American's harai-goshi. And the American was the more positive fighter.
I love how the commentators spend 80% of the time talking about the British athlete after the American won.
Love Jimmy Pedro!!!
Each time Kayla takes her back, I keep hoping she’ll sink the RNC.
What are these two sisters fighting over? Why doesn't their mom step in and break it up? Two sisters shouldn't be fighting like that.
cuz theyre 78kg a piece lol. You get in the middle of that, Im not.
Why is the announcer so biased
Молодец Кайла!!!
Why did the judge deduct a point from USA at 6:40?
+Jason Downs She didn't get the yuko, it too much time passed since the first attempt
I think they were tired before they started.
Olympic judo was so cool to watch.
Kayla dominated the match, but she exposed her neck to okuri eri jime a couple times. Had Gemma gotten the lapel like Burton did to Elmont in Rio, 2007...
What those who don’t understand Judo will say, is it’s boring and slow! Sloppy, and no technique. No, it’s quite the opposite, this is two high level Judo players maneuvering for position and constantly countering.
She is in the UFC now
6:08 hansoku make...
nope. 2012 rules stated that leg grabs are allowed as a secondary attack.
could these girls beat ronda? in judo at least?
Harrison is one weight class above Ronda however Ronda is a bit older. I've read that they would often train together, the sessions where highly competitive, went back and fourth, so it was always close.
+altertheskyy1 Easily
I believe so since Rousey wasn't able to get gold in the Olympics
honey you can’t judge based off of medal. Considering there were different people in both olympics you need to be aware and not do that based off of medal.
Harrison was her judo trainer while she was in the ufc I think
Great battle between bottle of water vs bawel o' waha
Harrison seemed almost recklessly aggressive, trying techniques that she was not in position to complete. Gibbons easily defending most of her attacks. Still, good enough for gold!
Kayla had admitted in interviews that USA judo cannot compete technique wise with most Asian and European counties. So USA judo has to make up for it with strength and aggressiveness.
Gemma Gibbons has won a London 2012 silver medal 🥈 for England 🏴, not the gold medal 🥇!!!
I've held Gemma gibbons silver medal
What is the name of the song that played at the entrance of the judo athletes?
She played in all fights.
Where do I find all the fights of Kayla Harrison in the Rio 2016 Olympics?
Mayra Aguiar rules
What is their walk-in hip-hop song? I can't remember it...
Imagine Brock Lesnar as a woman!
Third Herd lol
Ok.
I don’t think he’d be great at judo to be honest.
Not even close.
U mean kyle
Y’all think they were a lil bias.
Who is her Coach??
Wow. Harrison with a judo gold. Getting caught up on the Olympics with the virus going on. Just watching the grabbing and tugging and jamming the holds and slapping them away. THAT must be seriously painful. The actual throws probably don't hurt, like that, but I'm not a judo knowledgeable person. Plus the training and stamina. One thing about Gibbons. Her hips are positioned too far away to take on her American opponent. If a judoka has to grapple, standing up, why would she want to 'bridge' space to spam an attempt?
What's the thread count on a judo Gi like 3,000. Them thangs look thick.
They are so thick and in summer when working out it’s so hotttt
thought she was from middletown
I love You Kayla 😍😍😍😘😘😘
MY GODMOTHER❤
the out of bounds makes this sport so unwatchable.
Georgian Judo should have certain speed limits. Almost done is slow motion with rules restricting movement options based on the contact the opponents have.
??
Legend beast osss!!!❤😊❤😊

The great Britton girl was robbed of a point
these commentators are super salty ...
Goed machallah
What would they do without this jacket?
absolutely destroy you mate
@@internetenjoyer1044 you troll..many grips wouldnt be possible.
@@larsmalsbender7472 heavy weight olympic judo players dont need high level technical grip fighting to throw randows on the internet. The jackets represents normal clothes, they just something to grab. you can grab normal clothes. Maybe if you wear nothing but a t shirt, they have to adapt. so they just clinch instead
@@internetenjoyer1044 i understand you fully..i did Judo myself for 2 years..wasnt my sport all this cloth grabbing was too unrealistic to me.
I cant see how you would be able to use this techniques when you have a shirt or only a swim shorts on or whatever.
Was not meaned as disrespect or anything to the athletes.
Just not my thing with this heavy garment.
For example there is not 1 athlete competing in MMA/UFC with Judo Background.
How do you think about that fact?
@@larsmalsbender7472 in the event someone is wearing clothes that five no grips whatsoever, it's not a big deal, if you clinch with them and they're not a grappler then you'll instinctively knwo what to do. I think Kayla Harrison will beats ufc soon enough, it djust depends whether she can get down to 145. shes like ROnda except she can strike decently, and can chain wrestle as well as use judo
I’d wrestle with either one 🤓
0:20 what song is that playing? Anyone know?
Cheryl -Call my name
She's beautiful
American girl is very good!! 😀
what's song name??
로우지론다 call my name&pass out

If You can only do a move on you if they are wearing a ridiculous garment. It probably isn't an effective martial art.
You know Rhonda Rousey is jealous of her!!! 😂
the female Willem Ruska
Pass Out Tinnie Tempah
She could be andy sambergs sister lol
When are they going to design a gei that is a solid one piece like a cover all. It's only logical.
Just one small element of MMA. Don't bring judo to a UFC match and expect to win.
You must not know what it's like to be thrown. Once you do get thrown you'll realize it's not a small portion of MMA.
+Pigly_Jainda Squad
Only if you have not been drilling breakfalls in training. Then getting thrown onto a Judo or MMA surface is no big deal. Different story if it is concrete or asphalt but never seen MMA done on a road. Roger's original point is very valid. Judo is only a 5th of the skills you need for MMA. Punching, Kicking, Throwing, Grappling, Ground and pound. Judo only really covers the throwing element. They do a little grappling but weak sauce compared to BJJ or catch as catch can wrestling.
Ignorant comment is ignorant.
@@michaelterrell5061 Truth can be painful. Rhonda judo queen Rousey got her clock cleaned.
@@VestigialHead Thank You! You know what you're talking about!
Body language...
At the beginning Pedro is giving her motivation and shoulder rub, THEN..... the British chick just get a patch on the shoulder with NO motivational pep talk.... AND THE WINNER IS........... USA...... :)
Got kinda bored of Kayla doing the same move everytime ...
cool
You could see who was going to win before they even stepped on the May 😬
why do that walk like that?
Gemma Gibbons is hot
They look like stray cats fighting
these judo judges sitting on their chair watching two women wrestle each other,
are not actually counting the points. they sit in their chair having nasty, nasty thoughts..
getting paid to do it.. seriously..
