Woodlawn Industrial Park, an HO scale model train layout

- This video is set in New Jersey somewhere near Newark Airport. This is a freelanced layout but is representative of several in the area. There are several industries that accept and dispatch freight cars. The park is served by the "Woodlawn Turn" from Oak Island yard.
The slow rolling of the switcher is beautiful!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Cool switching layout and nicely done. It has everything to keep you busy for a while and still doesn´t look overloaded with industries.
Thanks for your kind remarks. It was a lot of fun building this layout and I still enjoy operating it. You can do some surprisingly long switching sessions
@@2sk21 sounds very nice! I hope to achieve similar fun with my latest project - albeit it is even smaller in size 😁

I just came across this video ... I love this .... Subscribed!!! 👍
Nice layout! Thanks for posting.
Glad you liked it!
Wow this is so nice. I have a 9'x 20" shelf space I'm working with and am completely stumped. I've built three layouts before but this is direction I want to go in.
Really glad you liked the layout! Despite being a model railroader for over thirty years, this is the first layout I actually finished. Even though I have a lot more space, I deliberately decided to keep the size of this layout small so that I actually had a chance of detailing it to the level I wanted.
It's clear you knew what you wanted when you designed it. Well done!
Thanks! I finally completed this layout after several previous projects that went nowhere :-)
I'm new to your channel and I love trains
What a great switching layout. Looks like plenty fun!
Thanks! I have been having a lot of fun operating this layout. I will post a few more videos of operating sessions soon. I still have a lot of detail work left to do.
This is very nice work, indeed. It reminds me of the old 70s-vintage "Timesaver" track plan built on a couple of David Barrow's 2x4-foot "dominoes". Expandable but a beautiful stand-alone layout, perfect for detailing without overwhelming. Thanks for sharing the tour!
Thank you for your kind words. This is indeed a kind of a shunting puzzle but I wanted to disguise that as much as possible with appropriate scenery. I am still in the process of adding more details and will post update once I finish them.
Beautiful train layout, trackwork, and touring narration, as it's all happening!
Great size layout, with a lot going on!
(You're great work is motivating me to better work on, and develop my 12 by 3ft subway yard).
Thanks again for sharing your great work!
Thank you for your kind comments and glad I can help you get motivated. I will put up an album of how I constructed the layout. I am really enjoying operating it.
Great layout.
It's such an amazing layout!! Thanks for sharing!! I'm trying to build something similar, but you've given me some ideas!
Glad you liked it - I have posted a link elsewhere in the comments to a forum thread about how I built this layout
Very nice, small yet action packed with lots of detail !!!
Love it, that's the same direction I'm going with mine (industry wise). Those trinity reefers are my favorite. Don't know what else to add to my scrap yard, unfortunately my oil refinery stuff was destroyed in the move so I may be doing a ready mix plant instead.
Glad you liked the layout - I really need to post some more videos. I have been distracted with another N-scale layout that I've been working on. Regarding scrap - a friend gave me a bunch of barrels in moulded plastic - I weathered those and it worked really well. I definitely need more scrap though.
Looks good man definitely some motivation for my shelf layout that I’m gonna build
Glad you liked it - its a lot of fun operating this layout!
I love this layout, I'm a big fan of switching layouts
Nicely done!
Glad you liked it - Its a lot of fun to operate!
Very cool tour and ops session.
Looks fantastic, can't wait to see it again in person!
Thanks!
Looks like a fun model railroad to operate!
Very smooth rides!
That’s a great little layout! Would love to see a video on how constructed the modules and legs. I’m interested in free-mo modules.
Glad you liked the layout - I posted a thread about the construction of this layout on a model railroad forum back in 2021 modelrailroadforums.com/forum/index.php?threads/woodlawn-industrial-park-was-northeastern-ho-scale-switching-layout.33316/
The modules are actually drawers that I bought from a North Carolina company that makes drawers for kitchen cabinets! The legs are just 2x3 lumber that cut very crudely using a jigsaw. I use leveling feet so it doesn't matter too much thankfully. I am a terrible carpenter 🙂
I could watch this all day!! Such a lovely design :)
Looks fun !
I see like in so many other videos "magic uncoupling" that is edited out of the video. Are we to assume some gigantic hand reaches down from the skies to do so, or are the magnetic uncouplers??? Believe me, magnetic uncoupling is far more fun.
I just use wooden skewers to uncouple cars 😄with uncoupling magnets, you have less flexibility in where you do the uncoupling
Great layout, enjoyed watching, thanks.
Nice job like operational layouts like this lot's to do... Many Thanks
Indeed it is a lot of fun to operate this layout. I am currently writing a small program to generate switching jobs.
A very nice video and layout. I have plans to expand my own HO scale layout, though as I'll be modeling a steam-era mountain railroad town, I don't think it will look quite as modern as yours.
Glad you liked it - there is a lot you can do with a smaller layout and you may actually get to complete it! I operate this layout almost every day and its still fun.
Great switching layout! I have a question; what is the little crane over your gondola that I can see at the beginning and at the end of the video? I'm interested by this kit so your help will be appreciated :) Thanks
That crane is actually from a Walthers kit, set of Piggyback ramps. I weathered it a little. Glad you liked it.
Thanks for sharing this. I'm modelling on 2'x4' folding tables (just 2 for now and this shows me what adding a third "module" could be like.) Did you scratch build those scenery elements? Nice details. Cheers.
Thanks! The structures are all from kits, mostly from Walthers. The road surfaces are sheet styrene cut to size. Incidentally the modules are actually 2' by 4' drawers meant for kitchen remodeling projects! I got them from a company in North Carolina that makes them to order. They are light and fairly rigid - and it saved a lot of time as I am not a good carpenter :-)
very nice!
I have a similar track plan but with the crossovers. I would like to use them so could you please put up your track plan?
You can see a blog I kept of the design and construction process of this layout in this forum thread: modelrailroadforums.com/forum/index.php?threads/woodlawn-industrial-park-was-northeastern-ho-scale-switching-layout.33316/
I used 3rd Planit software to design the layout but I am not sure you want that?
Thanks so much - the blog is very interesting and informative. I use Anyrail for my layout design.
Great video. Like me...
Thanks 👍
Does the grown throws control the frog power? How?
The ground throws do not have any electrical collection. I use a couple of Tam Valley Frog juicers to power the frogs. They have been very reliable and have never given me any problems in operation - I can highly recommend them
I’m new to the hobby built my 4x8 in my garage no idea on era do know it will be semi modern. As I’m looking for a Ny and Atlantic GP38-2
Yes - this layout could have easily be set in Long Island too! I am not aware of anyone who makes MP-15 switchers in the NY & Atlantic colors unfortunately. So you will have to do the paint job yourself
@@2sk21 Atlas will be doing the rerun of it sometime this year
@@2sk21 I’m after the gp 38 model I’m I saw the switcher last week but it’s gone now should have jumped on it but $ a wee bit tight right now
Yes i like your lay-out
Do you have picture from above or a track plan?
Thanks from Holland
Glad you liked the video. I posted a blog (including a track plan) about the construction of this layout here: modelrailroadforums.com/forum/index.php?threads/woodlawn-industrial-park-was-northeastern-ho-scale-switching-layout.33316/
I was wondering, how many feeders did you use? I have a 16"x72" layout. I haven't started wiring my layout.
Surprisingly, I have one feeder wire set for this layout and it seems to be more than enough. All track joints have been soldered however. I should also mention that the frogs are powered separately through Tam Valley frog juicers. In general, my feeling is that for small layouts you don't need a lot of feeders, especially if the track joints are soldered.
@@2sk21 One reference book I have recommends two feeders for every turnout. It has 7 feeders for a 16"x80" HO switching layout, thanks.
@@rong648 That seems way more than necessary - I don't think you need that many feeders for a small layout like mine (which is of a similar size). Even my heaviest locomotives with sound decoders work fine on this layout
@@2sk21 I thought it was overkill. I am looking to upgrade my DCC controller to a Digitrax Zephyr Express DCS52.
As a modeler myself, I really like this layout. However, why is it that modelers can't bring themselves to give their scenery the "lived in" look. Colors are too bright for the vegetation, buildings are too clean, etc.
@@marka5478 I’ve been slow in weathering this layout as I got sucked into other projects (like every model railroader 😀). I have a lot of lights yet to install as well
@@2sk21 Don't worry It all comes in time. I do realize it is difficult to model the "march of time".
