  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Savoy reaction, and this time we begin going through the final album I haven't reacted to, their 2018 record See the Beauty in Your Drab Hometown, and we start with the excellent "Night Watch," a tune I found compelling on multiple levels. So join me as we begin our final (though not "the final," as Under came more recently than this, of course) chapter of our Savoy journey. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on RUclips and getting early-access to video-reactions and audio reactions blocked on RUclips, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, watchalongs, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz
And those who'd like to support the channel with a one-time donation can do so via PayPal, at billshattner@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Oh, wow! I have been waiting for you to hear this song for almost 2 years, but I wasn’t expecting it today. 😊 Nice surprise. I knew you would love this. 😉
This was the first single from See the Beauty in Your Drab Hometown (Paul said earlier this year that the new album "Under" had a single-word title to contrast with the verbose title of the previous one 😁) and it shocked a part of the Savoy fans, who weren’t too keen on the prominent use of electronic sounds. It is indeed a departure from the usual Savoy sound and it split opinions.
I must say loved it from the start and it's still one of my favourites from Savoy. 👍😎 It got me hooked right away, I listened to it repeatedly before the album came out, secretely expecting more like this in the rest of the album. But there isn't any other exactly in this vein, if I remember correctly.
"Could have happened, almost did / Better luck next time, kid..." 🙃 These are some of my favourite Savoy lyrics and I often quote / adapt them in different contexts (I think I used them long ago in a comment here, but can't remember why or when 😁).
Together with all the unusual electronic sounds, I particularly love those guitars. ❤ I would highlight precisely two moments that seemed to hit you, too: that moment at 2:50, when the guitar riff goes higher (you smiled), and at 3:40, when the riff comes back again (oooff, that really hits!). 😎💯
This track features a-ha’s drummer Karl Oluf Wennerberg (from 2009, both live and in studio), you have already heard a lot of him and you will eventually get to see him in action when you start watching live performances from the 2010s. 😉

As much as I like Savoy's flat out rock songs, Paul's embrace of electronica for this is a smart change up. The main guitar riff is a winner, his vocal has a nice gravity to it. That middle section is a well composed corrupted melody with all sorts of twists and turns that make it seem like its on the verge of breaking down at any time. The drummer on this and the next track is a-ha's drummer since the late 2000s. He's also played on all the solo albums since then so the boys all seem to like him. Lyrically it would seem to focus on the lonely building or parking lot "watchman/woman" - "sound of footsteps fading out/leaves a night time worth of doubt" and "epic ride, not so much/Life gone gray, numb to the touch". So the entire lyric is about someone who spends night after night walking the halls of a dark, locked building at 1am - nothing happens, no one is around.

Imagine if this had been the first single from a new a-ha album. Germany would have gone wild!
