    Bravo Vassilis!! Actually it's NOT who had it first. It's the culture of their region. So, it's theirs: Greek - Albanian. Albanian-Greek. No surprises there. The most interesting are the Albanian-Greek villages that comprise the border of Southern Albania//Northern Epirus [actually the same place] that is the only section of that region that has a polyphonic singing tradition unique only to them. Interestingly, no where else in either country has this type of music. These villages sing the same exact songs in 2 languages using polyphony. Now that is what I call a real shared culture. Cheers from NYC!!!

Only 1 from Albania and it remains obscure to me except that i know Albania is unique and has its own branch on the language tree, like Greek and Armenian. Perhaps a smaller country and population with less emigration.
    After watching this, i read the total population of Albanians in US is under 300k. Rare find. Time to research the Albanian culture and of course find a restaurant to try the food. Lol

      Alipashiad
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
      The Alipashiad or Alipashias (Greek: Αληπασιάδα or Αληπασιάς) is an early 19th century epic poem written in Greek by the Muslim Albanian Haxhi Shehreti. The work is inspired by and named after Ali Pasha, the Ottoman Albanian ruler of the increasingly independent Pashalik of Yanina, describing, in heroic style, his life and military campaigns.
      Background
      Translation:
      All the world makes festivities, and all the districts:
      They bring Ali Pasha golden coins in coffers.
      Hour by hour Ali Pasha weighs more heavy:
      His name is heard in Hindi and in Yemen.
      In the Seven Frank Kingdoms his name is heard;
      And no one on this day had stood before him."[1]
      The Alipashiad was composed by Haxhi Shehreti, who was a Muslim Albanian and Ali's personal balladeer,[2] and who composed this work in Greek, considering it a more prestigious language in which to praise his master.[3] William Leake says that Shehreti had no Greek education and knew only the colloquial Greek of Albania and its borders. The language of the poem, therefore (according to Leake) represents the local vulgar dialect of the Greek language.[4]
      Despite the predominance of the Greek language as the language of Orthodox Christian education and culture, sometimes a form of cultural hybridity emerged in a number of 18th and early 19th century Albanian language documents, which were written using the Greek script. This was due to the fact that the Orthodox church, unlike the Catholic one, "was never to be convinced of the utility of writing in the vernacular as a means of converting the masses". Hence Greek script or language was used in various works of Albanian authors, both Christian and Muslim. An example of the latter is the composer of the Alipashiad.[3]
      The poem provides evidence about a period when Lord Byron, Christopoulos, Ioannis Vilaras, Ioannis Kolettis, Georgios Sakellarios and Athanasios Psalidas were among the scholarly, artistic and cultural elite of Ioannina.[4]
      Language
      The poem is written in a modern demotic Greek language and contains some dialectical interference and foreign expressions.[4] The Greek language used was based on the contemporary (vernacular) idioms of Delvine and Ioannina both places where the author lived.[5] Another decisive factor that influenced the language of composition was the scholarly Greek language which was the language used in the court of Ioannina during the time he served Ali Pasha. [6]
      Content
      Historically, the Alipashiad contains the unusual feature of being written from the Muslim point of view.[4] Apart from narrating Ali's adventures, the poem describes the complex Pashalik of Yanina, as well as the activities of the local mercenaries (Armatoles) and brigands (Klephts) that Ali had to deal with.[4]
      In the epic poem, Ali's war against the Souliotes is formalistically presented as a religious conflict, as the author refers to the Orthodox rebels as the Din Diijman "enemies of the faith". However, historical evidence rather indicates that the war was waged by Ali as a personal revenge against Souliotes. Indeed Ali didn't care for the territories of Souli, but he resented ongoing refusal of the Souliotes to submit to his rule. Moreover, Souliotes' religious identity as Christians held no particular relevance for Ali, as from a cultural perspective he ought to have favored them as being of Albanian descent like himself, rather than Greek, Vlach, or Turkish.[7]

    The Epirus/Thesprotia region which falls between Albania and Greece is rich and culture and has a unique dialect of language for both countries, music, culture and history. Religion has been used to divide us yet we are all from the same pot as we lived together for thousands of years in peace and contributed to each others rich history. Politics has divided us for centuries now and it’s sad. The church has manipulated people into identity politics. These songs showcase how similar we are in not just music and dances but also language influenced by one another.

      @@Lykourgos_361 Sadly hardcore nationalists and politics spread this poison to often. I am albanian from Kosovo here, took a DNA test and it says 87% greek. Albanians say greeks are albanians, and vice versa. Truth is we were once one people who split a long time ago before there was such a thing as greek or albanian. I do find it very interesting though. As I also belive the ancient illyrians and greeks must have been closely related.

    Γειά σου Vasilis! I congratulate you for your good job. It helps a lot to break the mutual prejudices.
    Professor Rudolf Brandl (austrian musicologist) has written a book about the music in the court of
    Ali Pasha of Ioannina (1790-1820) and there you will find the historical source of Greek koumpania
    and Albania saze. The first musicians were the Jews whereas Greeks and Albanins wrote the texts;
    the Roma played military music (zurna + davul) outside. After 1830 the Roma took the ensemble of Jews
    and mixed the repertoire of Ali Pasha with Albanian, Greek and Aromanian folk songs and hence
    several styles were created: "alipashalitiko", "arvanitiko", "tsamiko", "kleftiko", "delvinaki" in Greece;
    "labiko" in Albania. These styles provide the common base of epirotic musical repertoire between
    Greeks, Albanians and Vlahs in northwestern Greece and southern Albania. Keep going! Cheers!!!

      @@ianbarbaros2248 Ince saz (= art music) is called the musical ensemble of Ottoman court.
      It is composed of a pipe, kanun, saz, fiddle (kemane) and daf; there is no exact date when
      the clarinet entered the Albanian saze and Greek koumpania in Epirus region BUT
      101 % sure after 1830. The Italian composer Giuseppe Donizetti opened the conservatory
      of music in Istambul in 1828 and the Turks and even Sultan started to learn European instruments.
      These were the beginnings of clarinet in Istambul. Prof. Brandl shows a picture of a Greek wedding
      in 1709 where you see daf and zurna, later also lyra. Cheers!

      @@subspeciaeternis somewhere after 1830 is the most probable answer but it could have come earlier from the Ionian Islands(Corfu kefallonia Zakynthos). where they had brass bands some decades before that or maybe from the Greek military band which was established in 1824

    • @subspeciaeternis
      @subspeciaeternis 4 месяца назад +1

      @@ianbarbaros2248 The musical exchanges between Europeans and Ottomans date at least from 17 century,
      and that started by adopting the Turkish kettle drum, cymbals and bells tree into European orchestras.
      But the Ottomans were more conservative that's why the western instruments entered later.
      Don't forget that during 1820s Greece was in war against Ottomans, and they needed weapons
      not clarinets to fight for their liberation. Many Western instruments came in the countries occupied
      by Ottomans via Istambul, although Corfu or Saranda are only 80 miles away from Italy.
      Despite the existence of Greek military band, the Roma and the Jews were among the first musicians
      who integrated the clarinet in the traditional ensembles of Epirus.

    • @ianbarbaros2248
      @ianbarbaros2248 4 месяца назад

      @@subspeciaeternis the violin in Istanbul was introduced in 1870 by Kemenceci Vasilaki, a Greek professional musician from Sylivria who was playing in Greek panigiri festivals. The violin by that time had already been played for some centuries by Greeks (Crete, Aegean and Ionian islands, South Greece) perhaps as a continuation of the Byzantine vielle that appears in many Byzantine paintings. The clarinet entered the Greek folk kompania about 50 years before it entered Turkish folk music, Gipsy musicians played a big role popularizing it but not the Jewish as far as I know. The Greek military band was escorting the army immediately after it's formation in 1824 and most of its Greek musicians (among other Bavarian and French) were from the Ionian islands especially from Zakynthos. This band and the Ionian musicians have certainly played a role in the introduction of the clarinet in Greek folk music. I am not aware of any western instrument that entered Greek folk music through Istanbul or even through the Greek musicians of Istanbul. It's actually the opposite and certainly thats the case for the violin. Due to the negativity of Islam towards music, Turkish music was very conservative and underdeveloped and it didn't have the impact that you would expect on the Greek musicians from the beginning of the 19th. century onwards who were increasingly looking towards the newly established capital Athens and Italy for inspiration. Also the Romania- Odesa - Phanariotes -Ioannina connection have played some role in the development of Epirus music, especially with "Romanesque melodies" like Doina but perhaps with popularizing European instruments at some degree
