I love how you emphasize that there is "no one way" or necessary rules to follow for table setting. You create something beautiful every time using your own creativity and beautiful style.
"a simple lunch" = 2 underplates. I can only imagine what a formal lunch may look like! Love it! I have recently decided to start using my porcelain for everyday use because it's been gathering dust for 15 years so why not?!
Lovely cosy table. When my nan died I was asked what I would like to keep as a reminder of her. I'm not particularly bothered about 'real' jewellry but had such lovely memories of her cooking & serving typical English fare on her Willow Pattern dinner service that I asked if I could keep a few plates & as no one wanted any of them I got the whole service ! Blue & white has never been my favoured coloured scheme but you've rekindled my desire to use it again. Also, I NEED more soupières as one can never have too many ; ) Bravo Philipe for another great vlog & congrats on the number of followers xxx
Really lovely setting, Philip. My favourite part was towards the end with the shot of the tureen and the wine glasses, so simply yet elegant. I am sure soup for lunch never looked so good. Regards from Australia.
Philip, you are teaching all of us down-home ordinaries how to live an elegant life. As well, you are as cute as can be, bet your Oma is so proud of you! Beautiful table. 🍽☕️🍵🍸🥄🍴
I love how you celebrate the small things in life, you really make having lunch feel special ☺️ I absolutely enjoyed learning something new about tablesettings! Congratulations on your huge success with your channel, best regards from Germany!
Oh Philip am a grandma in Florida. It is such a joy as I watch u set the Table It remind me as a child my dad taught me how to use a knife and fork. Thanks for reminding us how beautiful it is.
Very basic, yet so smart. Blue and white with the silver is gorgeous. I like a busy table but also clutter free. Too much is not nice. It is good to see you are good at home décor, you have taken note from your family while growing up as so much is learned by following examples of the adults. Do enjoy and wish you all a blessed Festive season. Kind regards, Elize.
Without the distraction of a tablecloth or placemat, the dinnerware and glassware are the stars of this table setting. They shine against the rustic wood of the table. Simple yet quietly elegant.
Totally agree, I was just going to say the same! Love the contrast Philip! And...I love that you wipe the glasses before they're used. Nothing worse than a glass with dust, fingerprints or water spots. Loving your ideas and style. So glad you chose to have your own channel. Yay!
Agree but i have learned the hard way tgat adding a thin round of cork undrrneath helps with noise reduction and safety (as some people will slide the set closer or more away) and getting these small scratches out can be a pain.
@@belindaderudder8634 Great tip,, especially if used on a more formal table. I think in this case here, however, the table is so well "loved" that a few extra scratches will add to its rich history!🙂
Be still my "blue and white" heart! I actually got quite a few pieces of the Johnson and Bros pattern on the bowls for a birthday gift this year! Everything is so gorgeous. Blue and white makes my heart skip a beat and with your table setting, it's still skipping. Thank you for sharing. More please
You set such a beautiful table. Can’t wait to see what you do for afternoon tea! The blue carafe is gorgeous! Please, some more woodland creatures. That was such fun!
My grandparents house had been in the family for generations and was packed with cupboards and drawers full various patterns of china. I loved opening up the cupboards and discovering different plates and interesting patterns. It is lovely to hear your similar love for china and to see you take such care with such lovely pieces of history. I am excited to see more from you and your channel!
Table looked great . Nice to have the usual layout explained for different countries . Really good , we enjoyed watching you . Looking forward to seeing more. Thank you. Eileen and Brian
Everyone at Lalande is making me feel like I’m part of the Lalande family as I’m going to be alone again this Christmas as Covid is spiralling out of control again here in Québec, Canada. I’m a supporter of all who document their daily lives, Stephanie, Phillip, Dan and all friends of the chateau who have channels. ❤️
You solved a mystery for me, thank you so much. I wondered about the beautiful curtains and never heard a mention of them. How clever and living lightly on the earth by reusing the cloth, especially since I LOVE the pattern on it.
THAT is absolutely lovely! I'm imagining all that lovely blue and white with the yellow/orange pumpkin - winter squash soup... [AND I've been thinking about things I would like to see you vlog about, and I kept coming 'round to wardrobe, clothing and outfits - even if it's just a montage of already vlogged moments put together like a Milan Fashion Show thing done to music - which I have never been to, I'm just making this up in my head...so there's that - LOL! It could be of just your outfits, or everyone's 'fashion moments' at Lalande. I think that would be fun to see...]
More table settings please. The blue and white is lovely against the wood grain of the table. It's a shame that in America the tradition of a beautifully set table is now only seen in magazines and ads for china. Our dining rooms now have become catch alls for devices and home offices. Philip is such an inspiration. To be so young and have a true respect for antiques and beautiful objects is rare.
Your Grandmother is beautiful (she had a great deal of knowledge to share and you soaked it up like a sponge). I enjoyed your references “ In France it is done this way “, “ In the Netherlands, where I am from”. The references gave it a grounding and perks up the viewer’s interest..as in, oh, please tell me more.
Hello Philip! You are an exceptional presenter and very knowledgeable, it ‘s so pleasent to watch and listen to your new vlog, carry on the good work and greetings also to Your wonderful girlfriend Stephanie! 🏴
Nice! Something that I love from this video, is that you show how relatively easy it is to make something “everyday” into something special. You add a magic bit of ceremony to lunch. I think we need to remember how and why to do that! And obviously you put your heart and talent into it. Wonderful video and very lovely-looking lunch and ambiance!
Perfect!! Simple, delicious soup, French bread, wine and a gorgeous table setting. I guess I’d finish it off with a glass of champagne in the beautiful blue glasses.
Beautifully done! I love being a “part”of the LaLande family. Really helps when being isolated from family and my out and about routine. You all are always so cheerful. Thank you for sharing your joy.❤️
Well done. Simple and yet elegant. Nothing overdone. Your english perfect. For someone who lives in Australia it is so refreshing. Will be following you with pleasure.
Bravo Phillip! I have been a teacher for 44 years and want to compliment you on giving a clear concise and enjoyable lesson on setting the table. I could tell you were a lot more relaxed in this video and that you had practiced and prepared for this well. Your talking speed was perfect.
The table looks so lovely and inviting! I like that you didn’t use a cloth on it. The wood against the blue and white plates really says French country kitchen. You have such a great eye for picking up the bargains! 👍
Your table settings are always charming, Philip. You and Stephanie share a child like love of making everything beautiful and magical while still being hard working and considerate adults.
Love the beautiful plates on the rustic table. Blue/white is my go to so I love this table. I’m going to get my stemware out and use it! So inspiring. Thank you Philip.
Yes! And I was the second person to like and there were no comments then, but by the time I finished there were numerous ones. A testament to Philip’s popularity amongst de la Lande viewers!👏🙂
Dreamy blue and white, my favorite all my life. All my aunts had houses full of blue and white and myself and many cousins are following in the blue tradition.
That blue carafe is so pretty. And sounds like a bargain. My husband is a combo of you and Amaury. He loves antiques and silver but prefers Farm Life as that is where he grew up. We live in the city right now but still have the family farm. We just completed a small barn in the City....well, he did.
Lovely and informative! The dusting of the glasses is essential - I was at a dinner party where the hostess took a wine glass out of her china cupboard, poured wine in the glass and the "dust bunnies" floated to the top. oops. She didn't even notice and I fished them out with my finger. :)
Phillip, you’re inspiring me to make more of an effort to setting the table using family tableware even if it is just my husband and I. Just once in awhile to change a daily duty of setting the table to something special. 🦔😊
You are so charming Philip and I just love your easy way of showing and explaining and putting different items together without having to be exactly the same!! Love it ❤️ Thank you for the inspiration!! ❤️❤️👏👏❤️❤️
I love the “soup“ bowls. I have a few pieces of this pattern myself and grab them whenever I see them. The whole table looks lovely. Although I think I would have used the lighter blue glassware that was towards the back. I think it would have tied in the colors of the napkin. The soup terrine and the wine carafe are gorgeous as well. I am glad that you are doing this. So many people want to know how to set a lovely table and you love tableware. It’s like a match made in heaven. ;-)
This is great! Thank you so much for the explanation of each piece you put on the table. I especially liked the explanation of the differences in how the table is laid in France v. The Netherlands. I also enjoyed knowing who made the bowls. I'm dying to know what you cooked for lunch on such a beautiful table.
Very interesting! I had no idea about the knife rest. Very interesting to know that different countries have different place settings, I didn’t know that, hugs and love from Texas! Can’t wait to see the next! It would also be interesting to know some background of the choices of the place settings you choose. For example the cutlery, who made it, where, and when, same thing about Spode. I think there are different prints if I’m not mistaking. Anyway, loved as usual!
Loved the table setting. But here is where my curatorial/antique experience sets in. Never use alcohol on a finished table or piece of furniture. It will ruin the varnish. I'm sure it was all right for that unfinished piece, but the good stuff would be ruined by it. Enjoyed the video!
All that matters is that it is functional and beautiful. How you do it is up to you! I enjoy your love for beautiful things, whether old or new, and your creativity to use them!
I just subscribed. I have some blue and white dishes that were my grandparents. All of the different patterns are so lovely. Those glasses were a fantastic find for you. Love the napkins too. The table is beautiful.
LOVE the Spode selection ! What a great re-use for the curtains and napkins 😊 Philip I just love your joy of table settings - it has always been one of my loves as well 🥰 Setting a beautiful table always makes guests feel welcome and special.
Phillip you have just the right talent for setting a table! I like it that as a male, you don't see that these things are beneath you. I like how you get excited (just as I would) with the right colour of something that matches, or the twist in the glass. Beautiful things add joy to everyday life. I love to use my special and not so special china and glasses. Just makes each meal feel special in its own way.
In Europe chefs, butlers, formal waiting staff have been male dominating for centuries. Setting a table was for the male staff. Only in the last few decades women can finally make a break through. But even now, high end restaurants and wait staff are male dominant.
@@TheSmdl well I wasn't thinking of Phillip as wait staff!! I meant just as a regular guy, doing regular guy things. Here in Australia, while you might see a waiter setting the table, it would be rare to find a regular guy getting excited about tableware and setting the table. My husband couldn't care less what he ate of, just as long as he had food to eat!!
@@angelatorlop4319 Hi! My dad grew up running big 🚜tractors & farm machinery. Eventually he went on to spend his life driving heavy-duty land movers, water poles, & other 🚧 construction machinery in Los Angeles in order to prepare the way for our highways, roads, & many 🆕 developments. Our family comes from very humble working class roots, but my parents & both grandmother's 😍 loved beautiful things w/a passion. They took enormous pride in their hospitality & fancy tablescapes. They believed in using their finery to make every day a celebration. Even if they largely prepared more hearty, comfort fare over gourmet dishes. 🍽️ Of course, my grands stuck with more traditional elegance along the lines of ⚜️Chateau LaLande. They were always on the 👀look-out for a second-hand bargains of the finest China, porcelain, or silver. My parent's were remarkably modern, maximalist, & avant garde in their taste. 😖In any case, it was all quite unlike the families of my peers, who would be taken aback when seeing either table. With the exception of my gentle fraternal grandpa, the other macho menfolk in our family🌳 tree didn't dare tease my pops for his contemporary dishware passion. He was quite an alpha, a man of intimidating proportions w/a booming voice & strong convictions. 😉They quietly put up with his strange preference for attractive arrangements & never once challenged him. 🤭Probably knowing they'd lose, if they did. 🤗 It did give me a unique appreciation & perspective on the subject. My parents did not have an excess of money to splurge on fine things, nor did they 🛍️shop for exclusive designer labels, but they always liked to make a sensational statement. In college, I remember being rather shocked at my Saudi Arabian BF's billionaire Bel Air "summer" home. Their massive garage was filled w/all the latest sports cars & most exclusive sedans. ✈️They visited hot spots all over the world🌎 as casually as we took our local road trips🚘, but the interior of their home was rather minimal & non-descript. 🙂Their heavy hand thrown crockery was of the utmost simplicity. It was not unattractive, but also not showy. Of course, in retrospect, it still probably 💰cost more than my entire uni education. What I adored about his massive (& close) family is that there were well over a handful of elegant Arab men who regularly helped the womenfolk preparing feasts as well as setting & clearing up for parties. Except for my dad (& later my brother), most of the menfolk in my sphere let the ladies do the majority of the kitchen labor. 😘 It wasn't as if my parent's were trying to impress anyone by setting a special table. They just liked how it looked. How happy it made them feel. 🤣Sadly, in my experience most average American males are far less fascinated with fine dishware or setting a nice table. That's likely why I have been more attracted to individuals who came from other cultures where everyday hospitality is important. Where it is not emasculating for a man to enjoy the art of food prep or presentation. Overall, Europeans are thin on the ground in the US, but we do have pockets of French, Swiss, German, Spanish & Italian ancestry. Overall, my exposure is more limited on the West Coast. 💕 Love Philip's gentle nature. He is a true Renaissance man. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
@@teresacarle294 wow you are so lucky to be exposed to such things. I have always loved old and likely old-fashioned items (long before it became fashionable to do so). It used to be a pet peeve of mine that charity store never carried clothes past a size 14-16. They still don't have much in the larger sizes, but I make sure that I pass on the good clothes that I bus and only wear a few times in the hopes that they will have a bigger and better life elsewhere. I love porcelain and china and glassware and have never had a big budget to spend on any of these items. So I gather my treasures where I can, second-hand and brand new occasionally and I love to use them. My husband likes to keep them in "the pool room" it's a line from a movie where a working-class Australian family keeps all their precious keepsakes. "It's going straight to the pool room" was our favorite saying. After watching Stephanie, I thought about her philosophy of using things that bring you joy and thought, right, that is it. Out of the pool room and into daily use. I must say, it has improved my daily enjoyment of boring mundane meals (like spaghetti bolognese) immensely. Praise be to all the table-setting wares lovers of the world!!!
I absolutely LOVE this table setting. You're very informative of the history of table settings. Looking forward to future vlogs! There are not many videos of eclectic table settings on RUclips. You are talented to have such a skill!
Lovely table Philip. Thank you for reinforcing the fact that there is no one right way to lay a table. I've laid magnificent tables only to have someone comment on something being wrong. I love that you're mixing and matching too. We should all use the beautiful things we have and hit the charity shops for what we need rather than always buying new. Thanks again.
Ever since you showed up at LaLande, I've enjoyed watching your interactions with the others. Yours and Selmar's laughs and sense of humor are my favorite aspect, aside from the time Stephanie and Dan went at it with revenge videos. :)
Hi Philip, for me the magic number is 8, that is, the entire place setting of all the settings I have. You have laid such a beautiful table for lunch and great to see that you have the matching turrine and it's getting used. I see so many of them at second hand stores, nobody seems to want them these days. Mine act as double duty. If you warm them in the oven they are great also for holding things roast potatoes and corn cobs or even hot bread rolls and they keep things lovely and warm but don't steam them because of the ladle holes. Your wine decanter, just beautiful and for €1, you just could not leave it behind. Best wishes and I look forward to Your next vlog. If I also may be bold and make a request, the art of napkins and the folding. 😊💁♀️🍸🍾
LOVE the tip on the turrine as I have a lovely one but most of the family don't drink soup, I will defintely be using it for roast potatoes or yorkshire puddings
As you indicated, the art of the table setting is in knowing the rules and when to break them. The use of disparate pieces is so much like the people of Lalande, many backrounds and talents joining together to become a family. Thanks for a lovely vlog.
I grew up with the spoons you have for soup were for desert. But it makes absolutely no difference, The table is lovely. You have a good eye, you make it look easy.
there is a difference between a large soup spoon and a small one. The small ones are meant for cream soups, while the larger ones are meant for soups that have chunks of meat and vegetables. :)
@@ariellesoullighting4309 I learned about this a few years ago when I inherited a sterling silver set for 12 people !!!!!! It has two spoons and I asked Birks (store where they sell sterling) and they told me this. When you think about it, it makes sense: you need a bigger spoon for the chunks of food.
I love how you emphasize that there is "no one way" or necessary rules to follow for table setting. You create something beautiful every time using your own creativity and beautiful style.

I like how you interpret the “rules” to create your own style. I made butternut squash soup today and used a cereal bowl too. LOL.
All that matters is that it is functional and beautiful. How you do it is up to you! I enjoy your love for beautiful things, whether old or new, and your creativity to use them!
So glad you are doing this vlog, Philip! Your table looks fantastic. 💙 Looking forward to many more. Cheers🥂
I love you approach to setting a beautiful table and your approach to video making. I look forward to future videos.
Love the blue and white!! It's so interesting to see the different ways you set a table. 🦔🦔
Soup spoons are round not long. Many years spent cleaning my Great Grandmothers silver. Beautiful table.

Great job Phillip, I like the way you allowed just the dishes and glasses make the table look elegant. No tablecloth excellent Phillip!!
A beautiful and very welcoming table setting!! The new carafe is exquisite!! Well done!
I absolutely LOVE this table setting. You're very informative of the history of table settings. Looking forward to future vlogs! There are not many videos of eclectic table settings on RUclips. You are talented to have such a skill!
Amazing video!! I now feel inspired to put a bit more effort when setting my tables. Would apsolutely LOVE a tour of all your porcelain collection!
Thanks again Phillip today's setting so simple and elegant and everything sparkling. Fayette (Nanny Plum) 🐨🇦🇺🏵🌸🌲🎅
So Beautiful- the blues, the glass & the silver against the wood.
Very pretty table setting! The decanter is gorgeous
So simple and beautiful and refreshing a setting with the Christmas touches. Loving your new channel. 💕🎄
Beautiful. I'm really enjoying your genuine relaxed approach to these videos. A joy to watch. Very uplifting!
Love that the wall fabric has been repurposed as curtains and napkins!
What a beautiful way to elevate a simple soup lunch.
Love it, blue is my favourite colour to set a table. Thank you so much Philip
Philip what a beautiful table! Well done. Really loving your videos! Thank you so much for sharing, take care, stay well. Much love Kathy x
Yes thank you Phillip, I appreciate how you showed your grandmother's picture, the reasons behind every piece, the colors. The tree is beautiful!!!
Ever since you showed up at LaLande, I've enjoyed watching your interactions with the others. Yours and Selmar's laughs and sense of humor are my favorite aspect, aside from the time Stephanie and Dan went at it with revenge videos. :)
Love that you decorate with tablescapes .
Thank you dear Philip, beautiful table setting, love the 1 euro bargain, and the glasses, 🐿️🐿️
Well that is just stunning. So pretty. Walking into the kitchen with all the blue around, must have been a joy.
Good idea to warm it in the oven.
Yes, anything about napkin folding... history, techniques...
I did not know that! Thank you
@@ariellesoullighting4309 I learned about this a few years ago when I inherited a sterling silver set for 12 people !!!!!! It has two spoons and I asked Birks (store where they sell sterling) and they told me this. When you think about it, it makes sense: you need a bigger spoon for the chunks of food.
Who knew? :) Thanks for sharing that! I’ve never heard of that!!
In Australia the spoons shown would be for dessert, a soup spoon is round 🤔💕🇦🇺💐
I didn't know that, thanks.
