    I had to pause and look for reason as to why there was a Vietnam war, but I'm even more confused now than I was before after reading up on it. What made me look is the people you are bumping into, they seem like they are living a life of total joy, even though they might be working hard physically, us Aussies could learn a thing or two. I'll have to show the kids this video.

    What a video for me to stumble upon, those twisty mountain roads made me all nostalgic. First time I rode a motorcycle was in Ho Chin Minh City; I was 26 and it was one of those shitty Chinese replica Honda Win 100ccs, which I'd guesstimate was probably built circa 1996. Got the seller to teach me how to ride it (having been driving cars for years gave me the advantage of understanding how a manual transmission works), did a few laps around a relatively quiet Saigon block and bought the bike for $250.
    Set out about 8am on a Monday on a road trip across Vietnam (not realising the wet season was just beginning) with the aim of riding to Hanoi but only made it as far as Quy Nhon (via Ham Tien/Phan Thiet, Da Lat and Nha Trang), roughly 1/3 of the distance between Saigon and Hanoi. Riding 6 hours from city to city in torrential rain to then feel unmotivated to explore the towns on arrival (because of the weather) got the better of me and the bike was shoved in the hold of a sleeper bus to Hanoi. Some of those roads I rode on though... I'd round a mountain and see another valley full of rainforest punctuated by a huge river, epic waterfall and limestone karst cliffs. Or sandy bay after sandy bay along a stretch of idyllic undeveloped coastline.
    Now back at home in the UK a year and a half later, I've had my unrestricted licence for a month and can't get enough of riding bikes, all thanks to that Vietnam trip. I might have just spent my life driving cars and getting pissed off with everybody else on the road.

    I would love to do this. But I have no biking experience. Think its safe enough for a beginner if I rent a motorbike? Not sure what I'd do if the bike broke down there! And man.. those trucks drive close by you.

    • @BikesDrones
      @BikesDrones  2 года назад

      Many people rent a bike without experience but alot also get into accidents. I saw inured people nearly everyday at the local bacpackers. The traffic is wild and the truck drivers are even crazier. I would strongly recommend you get some training and experience before you rent a bike in Vietnam. It is possible to rent a bike with a driver for tours, its a great way to explore sections of the country and stay much safer. Costs more but still good value.

      The 150 will handle two people "well enough" but an XR250 would be so much better. Especially in the mountains. You will get there with the 150 but you will have a lot more fun on the 250. For my money go for the 250, its worth the price premium.

    what is the choice of bikes like there? I ride 2 up, so with luggage my 650 Vstrom is my weapon of choice normally, but im thinking that looks like Himalayan territory? the XR15o might struggle 2 up with luggage 🙂 your thoughts?

    • @BikesDrones
      @BikesDrones  7 месяцев назад

      The bike of choice was the CRF250L, easy to get rentals in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh. If a Himalayan was available to rent now it would be perfect. Two up would be Ok but better one bike each. There are CVT scooters that will take your partner anywhere you want to go or even the classic cub if gears a not a problem. In Vietnam you need to ride slower due to the chaos of people dogs goats jumping in front of you and the crazy truck drivers. The great thing is because accommodation and eating out is so inexpensive your dont need to load up on camping and cooking gear and can always get laundry done at the hotels done so dont need too many clothes. Packing light is the way to go. Renting a bike in Ho Chi Minh and dropping it off in Hanoi or visa versa is definitely a great start of a plan. Check online and see if they have any bikes that will meet your needs. Bigger bikes are rare as they attract a lot of tax and get expensive even by western standards. Happy New Year to you and your family. Let's hope 2024 is your best year yet.

    • @barebonesmc
      @barebonesmc 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@BikesDrones as you say, bigger bikes are pointless in that situation, but we will be 2 up, so the Himalaya would be the better option than CRF, but ill look, I think itll be India again soon though so there is always a choice and its never easy 🙂

    Did you have a Vietnam driver license and motobike insurance with the cards which are both mandatory here? Have a bad accident without either your fault or not and see what happens. Ever seen the show-"Locked-Up Abroad'? This is a dirty, dusty, noisy and dangerous country and not all like you see in these videos.

    • @BikesDrones
      @BikesDrones  7 месяцев назад

      Have you ever been to Vietnam? Lived there for 10 years. Never had a license and when pulled over twice for speeding, let off. The cops in Vietnam treat tourists with kit gloves. They use the locals as a source of bribes. The traffic is very free range but the speeds are much lower and you learn the patterns. The most dangerous drivers are the "professionals" truck and bus drivers. They are mobile death machines like sharks amongst minnows. Meet many hundreds of tourists who were exploring Vietnam by motorbike and a few with injuries usually minor and usually riders that thought Vietnam is a good place to learn to ride. Most had the time of their lives getting out and meeting the beautiful friendly country folk. Loved your truck restoration. Hope you and your family have a joyous and peaceful Christmas. Peace

      Thanks mate. Had an amazing 2900km trip with a couple of Vietnamese friends. Blew all my A roll in this one video :>) Mixing up with the locals and playing pantomimes was my thing in Vietnam. Hows your drone business going ?

      @@BikesDrones Yeah the drone business is good, although its become a videography business now as drone footage only constitutes 20 to 30% of shots required for most clients. It's been a real steep learning curve, but luckily I'm still loving it. I'm also hoping to release a motorbike video soon as that is also another passion for me. I'll be very keen to hear your feedback once its finished. Cheers mate.

      Well, I am working full time now, as well as having our business. So as soon as I get on top of some debts and seeing as I'll also get paid holiday pay, then that could be a possibility mate. I'm keen!

      Now that I know I'm getting steady income, I will be able to plan for trips that I've been unable to plan for in the past. I'm definitely keen and will start tentatively planning and saving. :-)

    Man your video makes me remind of this place so much. Did the Northwest loop last year solo and it was amazing man! Unfortunately GoPro didn't work out well so couldn't record, still have some great pictures though :)

    This looks just stunning. I've been planning to go to Vietnam for a while, but I don't think I could ride these mountains since I've got so little riding experience :(

    • @BikesDrones

      Its a fantastic place to explore. With little riding experience I would not recommend riding. You can get a bike with a guide and ride pillion which would be your best option.
