It was about time I dealt with my scraps...but I had no idea it was so bad. I had expected to have fun playing with fabric but instead I was taming batting scraps...and I think April will be about turning my scrapage into quilts
@Just Get it Done Quilts Can you do a video on the dusters and projects you use the leftover flannel? Also, if you have bigger pieces of scrap flannel, reusable pads are a great option! If no one in your family needs them, please consider donating (fabric or finished) so that the huge number of people in need can have access to sanitary products (they are great for an array of needs from menstrual use to postpartum to incontinence depending on thickness). 👍💕
As soon as the quilt is complete, I cut 2.5" strips; 5" squares. I have a shoe box for just 2 x 3.5" pieces. These make a great scrap quilt. When that shoe box is full I'll sew them together in 2's. The rest of the pieces go into a bin to be dealt with later. I find that this saves me time. Love your videos and now always make after quilts:)

I make a “pillow case”, put it in a trash can like a trash bag, put my unusable scraps in there. Once full,I sew it closed and give it to my local shelter as a dig or cat bed.
I had almost stopped sewing until so many folks had covid here and lots of us got together stuff together for these worker's mask........I provided scraps...........and some how I got hooked on making tiny scraps all sewn together......(some call it crumb quilting).......well, well, I made my first little random strips and got totally addicted....each piece is prettier than the previous piece........I have sheets of these about 5x7 inches all the way to 30 inches by about 17 inches......I might use them for fabric making stuffed animals or door stops or bowl covers..........meanwhile, I need a small rack to hang them on as I make them.....about 36 inches tall and not any wider than a tv table.........but much wider, so I can sew, and sew and hang as I go and press................any ideas how I may make or buy this.....???? thanks

Karen it is so wonderful how real you keep it. We all let things get out of control and you’ve given us a strategy to get it under control and for that I am grateful. I feel loyalty to you and a few others in YT, and as such I am beginning to watch the ads on your videos to the end. I have come to understand you are paid according to how much of the ad is watched. You give me hope. I have 50 plastic totes of material sorted in different colors, seasonal, and types of material. I have had kids moving in and out for 20 years so I haven't had the time or ability to get quilting done so now its time. And I cannot wait.
When my daughter started her online business, I gave her free rein to my fabric totes and sewing supplies. Her best sellers are fabrics and trims from over 30 years ago. Now I enjoy full days with helping her sew inventory and photo shoots... Lol Take care and be safe 😷
I'm a new quilter. I've taught myself from watching you tube. I keep all my scraps in plastic bags and write on the bag what quilt the leftover material was from. I don't have a lot as I've only made about 14 quilts. My mom has Vascular Dementia and wants me to make all her grand and great grandchildren a quilt so they will have something to remember her of when she's gone. I've done 11 and have 7 more to do. I've done 4 this month! I embroidery their name and birth date with a heart and both our names on each one.

Awe Karen, I just wanted to give you a huge hug when you reached that point in sorting where you had just had it. We've all been there. For me, mine doesn't come with scraps but with piecing. I want to just keep going and get it done. Well then out comes the seam ripper. I liked that you revisited some of your old videos and incorporated it into this. Hi Karen. I also manage my scraps on a monthly basis. Once a month I also create 9 patch blocks from my 2 1/2 inch squares as well as my 5 inch squares. This past month I decided it was time to do something with my 9 patch scrap blocks and my large supply of 5 inch charms. I made 5 scrappy twin sized quilt tops for my nieces and nephews that I will quilt by Christmas. They are all in different configurations, were easy to assemble and went together so quickly because the blocks were already sewn together. I love keeping my scraps sorted like yours and I also like spending time creating usable blocks out of them to store for later use. I would love to see a video of you making several simple quilt top designs using only your cut scraps plus maybe a solid background on them.
For me, diving into scraps is like a trip down memory lane. Even the smallest piece of that fabric I bought when I first started quilting (now 17 years ago already!) holds a memory of all the different projects I have used it for. It is a beautiful, sentimental journey and it ALSO WASTES A LOT OF TIME - so my mountain seems to just get bigger and bigger. Too much sentiment!
I found an awesome way of deal with my Mt Scrapmore...I got my boxes of scraps out and am doing a crazy quilt and with the scraps from those scraps I am making a dog bed. I have leftover fleece that I make into a pillowcase. I put the pillowcase in a basket and put the scraps in that. Then when it is full, I sew up the end and tada, I ha e a dog bed. I can even donate them to an animal shelter...thank you Missouri Star Quilt company for the idea.

I'm so jealous of your quilt stash! And your organized space. I love sewing with scraps and don't have enough projects to generate all the scraps I wish I could play with! I love your way of multitasking projects, letting each type of block/strip/panel/etc accumulate until it is enough for its own quilt. What fun!
A local thrift store has $1 Sundays, 75¢ Mon, 50¢ Tues, - on one color of tags each week. I search for 100% cotton, quilting weight, clothing items, or "fancy fabric" things. Then cut the shirts and skirts into strips and squares for scrap quilts or use as fabric for doll clothing. Fancy fabric is used for Art quilt projects, doll clothing or costumes. Have also made party dresses for small children.
Love the idea of put the scraps in a laundry basket . I have 3 little baskets behind my sewings machine and don’t have space. Thanks for the idea. I love scraps.
I enjoy watching your organization and creative skills. This is always fun for me especially in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. I have been inspired and started making quilt tops again. So thank you Karen.
I am super excited to see your ideas for scrap quilts. I make scrappy 5” squares and have about 200 that I have NO idea what to do with and I also have a role of linen or muslin that I make scrappy strips like you. When I can’t close my two scrap drawers I will tackle the scraps again lol.
I make six and a half square crumb blocks and have over 300! Ideas welcome. My favorite thing to do as mindless sewing and save anything too small for other uses. I have totes for 1.5,2,2.5,3 inch squares. A box of triangles for HRT’s,a drawer of various strip width’s, drawer of salvage’s, and totes of leftover blocks and sample blocks. I could just make quilts with all this and never touch my fabric stash!
As a new quilter with basically no stash, this is all incredibly intimidating and overwhelming to me! How you keep all this information straight in your head is incredible.
Well you’re lucky that you saw this video before you accumulate your stash. You can set up your containers now. Either you can do solid colors and patterns like she does. Because right now you may not know exactly how you want to organize them but at least you can get started

Hello, I after watching your video it reminded me of all the time spent making 2 /12 “ squares and strips, 4” squares, and 5” squares. Thinking I will use them someday. Well I did make two tops, but not quilted yet. Then I got burned out and decided to donate them to the church. I thought out of sight out of mind. Well of course I’m right back where I was, cutting squares, etc. but now I have a better understanding of what to do with them now after watching what you miraculously do with yours. For this I thank you.
Karen, a good eraser works best on the fibers that get stuck in your cutting mat. I can’t think of the name, “Grüeber”?, but it’s German. It gets out the embedded fibers.. Then, to clean up the eraser crumbs, wipe with a wad of that batting scrap you’re tossing. I love your videos. You always jog my memory and inspire me to get back at it.

Hello Karen, That is a fun wy to deal with scraps. I use to wait and wait to sort everything out. But then it got so big I just could not deal with it. So I put all of the scraps in bags and gave to a quilting guild. Let's say they where happy to see me (lol). Now I make time every week to do the sorting and now I never get in over my head. Thank you again for such great tips and trics.
I’m desperately trying to manage my ‘Mt Scrapmore’ but feeling quite overwhelmed with it all. It’s the crumbs I’m struggling with. I like the idea of setting a timer. Thank you for sharing your advice.
Your videos have encouraged me to attempt sewing a blanket and see if this is something Id like to do long term. So I took apart 9 men's button down dress shirts and cut 6 inch squares. Started to sew them together. And now a scrap pile has begun. Its been exciting and a bit nervous cause I want it to turn out nice. So far so good. Thank you.
Appreciate this video! After watching, I spent a good week, or more sorting my scraps and turning scraps into useable fabric. From there I made a very cute, stiff sided tote to carry my vintage Spartan sewing machine. Thank you for these inspirational videos!
I have adopted the hamper, but now there are two of them. One for solids and the other for prints. They get to play together but it is so much easier for me to 'see ' the real fabric combos.
i like how you use your kitchen island. i have a special table made from two 8 cube structures laid on their side with plyboard on both the top and bottom. 6 caster wheels below and to make the wood not slip, i used shelf lining.
I made a great crazy quilt blocks out of my husbands ties using quilt as you go onto muslin. I wound up framing them in 12x12 frames. I want to do another crazy quilt with fabric because I love the random shapes, colors and sizes.
Strips of batting from trimming quilts has emerged as the best ever way to keep pairs of shoes I am reselling together. I wrap in a little tissue paper and nest them, then tie around just tight enough to hold them together.
what a nice surprise on a Saturday sewing day! I have a couple scrap project going, so I sort by what works for them. I try to process one batch at a time and then do a short clean up. Today I will be setting it up elsewhere as we are welcoming company this week. Time for Mt Scrapmore to move! (making crumb blocks and spiderweb blocks)
Love your tutorials on this scrap usage and I also have been sorting mine. What I can get out of blocks, go into those, strips as well. I use the smallest pieces into paper towel tubes and start my woodfire with those or campfire. That works great for us. Have a great day😊
OMG what a great idea for batting scraps. I have a bunch of batting scraps that are too much of a pain to sew together. Pillow stuffing is such a great and easy idea.
Great to see you create the same "mess" as we do trying to sort the scraps. Mt scrapmore multiplies overnight and is great to put your tips into good use. I'm using old telephone book paper for my foundation strips. Works well.
You are so inspiring Karen. I’ll have to remember to try and process my scraps as soon as I’m done with a quilt. I think a pieced back is so interesting, and it could provide wonderful opportunities for unique labeling too!
Karen, I am earmarking this video for when I am asked how to store/use scraps. Being a scrapaholic myself, this video clearly demonstrates that categorizing the scraps in a manner that works for you makes USING the scraps easy. Yes, in my studio, when a container is full, it is "Stop and MAKE something from this" time...and I love the outcome! Liz in Houston

Karen, I always look forward to your blogs. I also save my scraps, mine bin is called "Tee Tetons." I love your strip scrap and using scraps in your backing. I keep my scraps in a large clear tote. The scraps are in Zip Lock bags, all by color. I always keep a selvage and scraps from each quilt I make. I put them in a ZipLock bag with the name of the pattern and who the quilt was made for. I keep everything in a clear tote. I've found that I use some of the same fabrics in other quilts, don't have enough fabric and know what to look for from the name, pattern and color of the fabric from the saved selvage. I'm going to start using my timer when I get off track in quilting. Lynne
Great video! Last year I bought new cutting mats. I kept the old ones for cutting scrap batting, flannel, etc. that make a mess of mats. Still clean them but great use for old mats. 🥰
Me too! Especially for the batting, and now I use it more than my paper cutter for cutting paper too! My older mat it about to split in two-- no problem, I have tape!
I make little pouches or mini bags with my batting and scraps. Also I do big bag with scraps and friends/family members love them. Also make appliqué crafts and throw pillows etc. I love all your videos and ideas 🌸
I organize mine as i cut fabric into different bags, one for stuffing, salvages to make bag handles etc, one for the other projects, one for quilting in the future.
@@dale3404 Strips of equal length, then braided together. I usually sew ends to ends to get equal lengths, then braid. Makes very strong handles. So it’s a roped handle.

This is how I manage my scraps, I have one large shoe box and when it gets full I take one day to make zipper pouches and one day to make pot holders and then I cut and organize by color anything that may be left for scrappy quilts. All of my relatives and friends have many pot holders and zipper pouches so I always find homes for the items instead of keeping them because that would kind of defeat the whole purpose of scrap management. Give it away, just give it away!
Gee, I really love this idea, especially as I’m making 2 mug rugs for hubby as he drinks his coffee on our couch. And yes, I find a few drips on the coffee table every so often.
@@quiltgram3056 what dimensions do you make your mug rugs? My husband prefers large coffee mugs. Our daughters refer to the mugs as flower pots. Would 6 x 12 be too big? Occasionally, he'd snack from a small bowl/saucer while at his desk so a rectangle instead of a square seems a better idea(? ) Maybe I'll just sew up a stack of both and watch which he prefers. Have allocated an under the table bin for my bigger dressmaking scraps and one for my quilting cotton scraps, too big to collect to chop into tiny scraps, but not quite enough for a full project. What is the white fabric you are sewing the straps to? I am new to sewing and quilting. So any information is helpful.

I had almost stopped sewing until so many folks had covid here and lots of us got together stuff together for these worker's mask........I provided scraps...........and some how I got hooked on making tiny scraps all sewn together......(some call it crumb quilting).......well, well, I made my first little random strips and got totally addicted....each piece is prettier than the previous piece........I have sheets of these about 5x7 inches all the way to 30 inches by about 17 inches......I might use them for fabric making stuffed animals or door stops or bowl covers..........meanwhile, I need a small rack to hang them on as I make them.....about 36 inches tall and not any wider than a tv table.........but much wider, so I can sew, and sew and hang as I go and press................any ideas how I may make or buy this.....???? thanks

I'm so jealous of your quilt stash! And your organized space. I love sewing with scraps and don't have enough projects to generate all the scraps I wish I could play with! I love your way of multitasking projects, letting each type of block/strip/panel/etc accumulate until it is enough for its own quilt. What fun!
A local thrift store has $1 Sundays, 75¢ Mon, 50¢ Tues, - on one color of tags each week. I search for 100% cotton, quilting weight, clothing items, or "fancy fabric" things. Then cut the shirts and skirts into strips and squares for scrap quilts or use as fabric for doll clothing. Fancy fabric is used for Art quilt projects, doll clothing or costumes. Have also made party dresses for small children.

I am super excited to see your ideas for scrap quilts. I make scrappy 5” squares and have about 200 that I have NO idea what to do with and I also have a role of linen or muslin that I make scrappy strips like you. When I can’t close my two scrap drawers I will tackle the scraps again lol.
I make six and a half square crumb blocks and have over 300! Ideas welcome. My favorite thing to do as mindless sewing and save anything too small for other uses. I have totes for 1.5,2,2.5,3 inch squares. A box of triangles for HRT’s,a drawer of various strip width’s, drawer of salvage’s, and totes of leftover blocks and sample blocks. I could just make quilts with all this and never touch my fabric stash!
As a new quilter with basically no stash, this is all incredibly intimidating and overwhelming to me! How you keep all this information straight in your head is incredible.
Give it a month and you’ll have a stash!! Haha
Well you’re lucky that you saw this video before you accumulate your stash. You can set up your containers now. Either you can do solid colors and patterns like she does. Because right now you may not know exactly how you want to organize them but at least you can get started

Hello, I after watching your video it reminded me of all the time spent making 2 /12 “ squares and strips, 4” squares, and 5” squares. Thinking I will use them someday. Well I did make two tops, but not quilted yet. Then I got burned out and decided to donate them to the church. I thought out of sight out of mind. Well of course I’m right back where I was, cutting squares, etc. but now I have a better understanding of what to do with them now after watching what you miraculously do with yours. For this I thank you.
I can't wait for "get these blocks into quilts" month.
There is something really beautiful about scrappy quilts.
Karen, a good eraser works best on the fibers that get stuck in your cutting mat. I can’t think of the name, “Grüeber”?, but it’s German. It gets out the embedded fibers..
Then, to clean up the eraser crumbs, wipe with a wad of that batting scrap you’re tossing.

I do the batting swipe first. The tape is a quick clean up. The eraser is great for a thorough clean

Hello Karen, That is a fun wy to deal with scraps. I use to wait and wait to sort everything out. But then it got so big I just could not deal with it. So I put all of the scraps in bags and gave to a quilting guild. Let's say they where happy to see me (lol). Now I make time every week to do the sorting and now I never get in over my head. Thank you again for such great tips and trics.
I’m desperately trying to manage my ‘Mt Scrapmore’ but feeling quite overwhelmed with it all. It’s the crumbs I’m struggling with. I like the idea of setting a timer. Thank you for sharing your advice.

Your videos have encouraged me to attempt sewing a blanket and see if this is something Id like to do long term. So I took apart 9 men's button down dress shirts and cut 6 inch squares. Started to sew them together. And now a scrap pile has begun. Its been exciting and a bit nervous cause I want it to turn out nice. So far so good. Thank you.

Appreciate this video! After watching, I spent a good week, or more sorting my scraps and turning scraps into useable fabric. From there I made a very cute, stiff sided tote to carry my vintage Spartan sewing machine. Thank you for these inspirational videos!
I have adopted the hamper, but now there are two of them. One for solids and the other for prints. They get to play together but it is so much easier for me to 'see ' the real fabric combos.
i like how you use your kitchen island. i have a special table made from two 8 cube structures laid on their side with plyboard on both the top and bottom. 6 caster wheels below and to make the wood not slip, i used shelf lining.
I made a great crazy quilt blocks out of my husbands ties using quilt as you go onto muslin. I wound up framing them in 12x12 frames. I want to do another crazy quilt with fabric because I love the random shapes, colors and sizes.

Strips of batting from trimming quilts has emerged as the best ever way to keep pairs of shoes I am reselling together. I wrap in a little tissue paper and nest them, then tie around just tight enough to hold them together.

what a nice surprise on a Saturday sewing day! I have a couple scrap project going, so I sort by what works for them. I try to process one batch at a time and then do a short clean up. Today I will be setting it up elsewhere as we are welcoming company this week. Time for Mt Scrapmore to move! (making crumb blocks and spiderweb blocks)

Love your tutorials on this scrap usage and I also have been sorting mine. What I can get out of blocks, go into those, strips as well. I use the smallest pieces into paper towel tubes and start my woodfire with those or campfire. That works great for us. Have a great day😊
OMG what a great idea for batting scraps. I have a bunch of batting scraps that are too much of a pain to sew together. Pillow stuffing is such a great and easy idea.
Great to see you create the same "mess" as we do trying to sort the scraps. Mt scrapmore multiplies overnight and is great to put your tips into good use. I'm using old telephone book paper for my foundation strips. Works well.
You are so inspiring Karen. I’ll have to remember to try and process my scraps as soon as I’m done with a quilt. I think a pieced back is so interesting, and it could provide wonderful opportunities for unique labeling too!
Karen, I am earmarking this video for when I am asked how to store/use scraps. Being a scrapaholic myself, this video clearly demonstrates that categorizing the scraps in a manner that works for you makes USING the scraps easy. Karen, I always look forward to your blogs. I also save my scraps, mine bin is called "Tee Tetons." I love your strip scrap and using scraps in your backing. I keep my scraps in a large clear tote. The scraps are in Zip Lock bags, all by color.
I always keep a selvage and scraps from each quilt I make. I put them in a ZipLock bag with the name of the pattern and who the quilt was made for. I keep everything in a clear tote. I've found that I use some of the same fabrics in other quilts, don't have enough fabric and know what to look for from the name, pattern and color of the fabric from the saved selvage.
I'm going to start using my timer when I get off track in quilting.

Great video! Last year I bought new cutting mats. I kept the old ones for cutting scrap batting, flannel, etc. that make a mess of mats. Still clean them but great use for old mats. 🥰
Me too! Especially for the batting, and now I use it more than my paper cutter for cutting paper too! My older mat it about to split in two-- no problem, I have tape!
I make little pouches or mini bags with my batting and scraps. Also I do big bag with scraps and friends/family members love them. Also make appliqué crafts and throw pillows etc. I love all your videos and ideas 🌸
I organize mine as i cut fabric into different bags, one for stuffing, salvages to make bag handles etc, one for the other projects, one for quilting in the future.
You use selvages to make bag handles? I’m trying to envision that. Would you please elaborate?
@@dale3404 Strips of equal length, then braided together. I usually sew ends to ends to get equal lengths, then braid. Makes very strong handles. So it’s a roped handle.

Thanks for sharing what to do with batting scraps, I’ll start cutting mine into tiny scraps and give to a friend that can use them to stuff the little dolls she makes.
This is how I manage my scraps, I have one large shoe box and when it gets full I take one day to make zipper pouches and one day to make pot holders and then I cut and organize by color anything that may be left for scrappy quilts. All of my relatives and friends have many pot holders and zipper pouches so I always find homes for the items instead of keeping them because that would kind of defeat the whole purpose of scrap management. Give it away, just give it away!
Gee, I really love this idea, especially as I’m making 2 mug rugs for hubby as he drinks his coffee on our couch. And yes, I find a few drips on the coffee table every so often.
@@quiltgram3056 what dimensions do you make your mug rugs? My husband prefers large coffee mugs. Our daughters refer to the mugs as flower pots. Would 6 x 12 be too big? Occasionally, he'd snack from a small bowl/saucer while at his desk so a rectangle instead of a square seems a better idea(? ) Maybe I'll just sew up a stack of both and watch which he prefers. There's no shortage of scraps lol Take care and be safe 😷

Have allocated an under the table bin for my bigger dressmaking scraps and one for my quilting cotton scraps, too big to collect to chop into tiny scraps, but not quite enough for a full project.
