    I still feel that The Desert is Katara's best episode. While she has no badass fighting scenes like in the Southern Raiders or soapbox moments like in the Waterbending Master, it affirms that her best attributes aren't just in her fighting prowess or righteous speeches. In an episode where Toph is helpless, Sokka is tripping, and Aang is distraught to the point of going out of his way to kill something, Katara remained as the one person who was able to hold the group together and the only person who came to Aang at the end instead of away. In essence, The Desert highlights Katara at her best as not a warrior or as an activist, but as the nurturing dynamo that kept the group moving at their lowest.

      One particular moment is when Aang blows up at her after he can't bend any water out of the cloud. Instead of lashing back or even being a little annoyed (as she had every right to be) at his outburst, she maintained total calm and moved on. She knew that the best interest of the group was to stay together, both physically and in morale, and she knew it that situation most of it was resting on her.

    The Desert also does the brilliant job of making sure you care about Appa as much as Aang does, by making you feel his absence. What once would’ve easily been a story where you cut to the Serpents Pass, now requires an entire episode-long ordeal of the Gaang struggling to get out of this massive desert all on their own, showing how trapped they now are without him. You’re made to feel the full weight of the loss.

    Kurt Vonnegut once said "Every sentence must do one of two things - reveal character, or advance the action". I think the same can be said of episodes like these.
    Advancing the action is great, but sometimes you need an episode to reveal who these characters are, to the audience and to the characters themselves.

  • @gentlemandemon
    @gentlemandemon 4 года назад +655

    I generally don't like people using the term "filler" for episodes like these. It's weird to treat anything that's not immediately advancing the central narrative as extraneous. Anime has genuine filler where no changes to the status quo can be made and the episodes only serve to pad the episode count for the purposes of waiting for canon material arc. You don't lose anything when you watch Naruto and decide to skip to Shippuden after the Sasuke Retrieval Arc, but you absolutely lose important characterization, team dynamics, and world building if you skip these episodes of Avatar.

    • @AdvancePlays
      @AdvancePlays 4 года назад +18

      I get not liking it at all, but I've just opted not to view the term as a negative one. One Piece has its fair share of skippable arcs, but my favourite anime storyline of all time is the G-8 arc which is filler through and through (it literally ends in the exact situation it begins, shot-for-shot!)
      It fits in the surrounding arcs really well and reinforces the world building, has great characterisation and interactions, and some of the funniest writing in the show. So not all anime has it as bad as Naruto!

    • @gentlemandemon
      @gentlemandemon 4 года назад +41

      @@AdvancePlays I totally agree with you. It's not a "calling it filler means it's bad" thing that bugs me so much as I dislike the "anything that doesn't immediately move the plot is filler" mentality.

    • @eggsnspam
      @eggsnspam 4 года назад +9

      @@gentlemandemon Exactly. In many regular tv shows, it's the "filler" that actually ends up endearing the show to long time fans. Stargate SG-1's "Window of Opportunity" episode was fun, shows awareness of the fandom, etc. Ember Island Players did this very well as a filler episode that poked at the fandom and but still characterized the people in ATLA.

    • @Ilsezwarts
      @Ilsezwarts 4 года назад +16

      I totally agree with this. I wouldn't even say that the beach episode doesn't add anything; it gives the viewer more insight on Azula for example.

    • @Ilsezwarts
      @Ilsezwarts 4 года назад

      Also on filler being bad; I think that what constitutes as filler kinda differs per show. For some anime you could argue that filler is part of the ride, for example Sailor Moon has tons of anime original content, but it's mostly great (that is, if it is your cup of tea) for others like Bleach and Naruto and one piece fillers, it definitely is just padding for the manga to continue producing content. (Which is why we are getting the big shows in season chunks now, which is way better than the filler practice imo, especially ethically for the animators) In other, anime original shows, fillers might be those types of bottle episodes that are mentioned in this video (aka beach episode, ect ect) but still part of the original complete package. (I.e. not added in adaptation)
      I think this filler mindset, and the mindset that everything directly needs to further the plot is kind of dumb in general. My least favourite complaint is when people say that episodic shows are too fillery. Dude, it's an episodic show, that's the point. I've seen this as criticism for shows like Kaguya-sama; a large portion of the point of the show are the jokes surrounding the situation, if you can't enjoy that then why are you watching it? Kaguya-sama is great partially because it manages to feel plot relevant (to some extent) and bc it allows itself to just explore the concept without too much rush.
      I am a great magical girl fan and most of those are episodic so I guess I'm biased lol

    Even though this is about AirBender, it highlights what LOK was missing, "filler episodes" or moments of downtime for deeper character explorations. With only 12 episodes a season there was no time for these kinds of episodes.

    • @tariqthomas9090
      @tariqthomas9090 4 года назад +33

      I don’t think LOK was missing those.
      Book One had The Spirit of Competition (which was meh). Book Two had the underrated Civil Wars Part 1 and Night of A Thousand Stars (and other ones but they weren’t that good). Book Three had The Earth Queen, Old Wounds, Original Airbenders, and The Stakeout. Book 4 had Korra Alone, The Calling, Reunion, and Operation Beifong.
      This is one of the reasons why the later seasons of LOK are stronger than the first two. The character work is a lot stronger and they managed to incorporate both character AND plot into the narrative. As opposed to just lots of plot action and sporadic character work and love triangles.

    Even though Avatar is considered "children program/show" it truly captured the essences of "all audiences". It handled matured themes so the adults/teens can relate while still keeping a fun/childish nature for children to enjoy. Its a S-Class standard/example for television, that may never be replicated or surpassed. And honestly, if the show was just made for just an "adult audience" it would definitely not be as good as it was since they're losing the limitation/requirement (fun/childish nature) for creating a show primarily just for "children". It's much more impressive they were able to make a show intended for children so grand/inspiring/relatable for all ages to enjoy.

    The important thing about those episodes is that we got emotional context.
    When Aang shut down emotionally in the episode following the Desert, it hurt more because we saw how angry he was in the Desert. We saw Katara ay her most motherly, which helped us understand more when we learned why she became motherly. We saw Toph as a normal vulnerable blind girl without her "Earth sense."
    In the Beach, we learned things about those characters that added emotional weight when Azula was betrayed by her two closest friends, and we understood why Zuko was willing to betray his own father.
    Without the character beats of these episodes, a lot of what happened later would have made less sense and had less emotional impact.

Also I agree that she’s exactly how most ppl would react. Imo, she’s the most authentically written character out of all of them; she’s the most real. She’s a kid who raised herself and ended up not being able to control her emotions well. Who would’ve thought that’ll happen?? But I only disagree with the end part. Imo, it’s not that ppl hate seeing themselves, it’s just they can’t handle a real character like Katara.

    Great Video.
    And, Avatar: TLA doesn't have a single "filler" episode.
    Even tho the "filler episodes", like you mentioned "The Great Devide" doesn't move the central plot forward, they still:
    1. Contribute to worldbuilding, the political and historical landscape and/or
    2. Challenges Aang/the other characters where they learn a lesson that further shapes their characters.
    3. Make room for showing more of these character dynamics and adventure without the baggage of always moving the central plot. (Part of the reason why I'm missing these characters is that I'm missing these adventures.)
    4. And then there are those very character driven episodes, like the ones you made the video about. Another example: Tales of Ba Sing Se.
    When I was watching this, I knew some would call some of these episodes "filler", but if these episodes still furthers the above aspects of a story, then the term completely loses its meaning here, doesn't it?

    • @Duiker36
      @Duiker36 4 года назад +5

      Um, no? The entire motivation for the story is "Bad wizard do bad thing; heroes must stop him doing it". That's not character-driven. It's not a story about how Aang has a crippling flaw and by overcoming it, the world is saved as a happy coincidence because it now has an actualized Avatar. Instead, the character plots are all _subplots_.
      For comparison, Legend of Korra is largely character-driven. In Season 1, Republic City is saved because Korra figured out airbending and also I guess energybending, and in subsequent seasons, she continues to figure out herself and her place in the world and all that stuff. Her internal conflict is the driver for the show. But in ATLA, the driver is some rando in a faraway land is being a problem. Aang's pacifism just _doesn't come up_ until like 5 episodes out. There's no character moment for Aang about whether or not Ozai needs to be stopped.
      If Zuko were the protagonist, I'd agree with you. But he's not.

    Edit: the desert is also an excellent example of what makes Aang, Katara and ‘Kataang’ so compelling. It shows us that even the most optimistic, kind-heated people can fully experience rage and dejection because of grief and trauma. And in such situations, where grief leads to despair, the ones who hold it all together are not the ones who are more action (I mean, behavior) driven like Toph or Sokka, but the ones who allow themselves to feel i.e. Katara, the character whose greatest strength is her compassion. And also, the idea that Katara is the only one who is able to calm Aang down, not be talking but by simply holding him and expressing that she is always there for him! *tears up immediately* such a mature depiction of true love, in a “kids’ show”!!!! Truly love this episode and this show.

    Not to mention that The Beach gave new layers to Azula, which we wouldn't have seen if the episode didn't exist. Without exposing such layers (and expanding on Ty Lee and Mai's feelings), the scene when her closest friends turn against Azula wouldn't have had the same impact. We saw Azula caring about Ty Lee, showing (for the first time) that being perceived as dangerous (a monster) also caused her to suffer. So when Ty Lee (who's always been sweet to the princess) is the one to attack her to protect Mai (who on the beach behaved in a way that showed that she had a sincere friendship with Ty Lee, but never really liked Azula), we can understand why it hits Azula so hard.

    I never watched Avatar when it came out & I feel really bad about that. The thing was I wasn’t really a fan of anime back then, & they were so many anime influenced cartoons back then, like Ben 10 & Totally Spies, so I just kind of wrote them off. Now that I’ve seen a lot more anime in the last few years, I really want to go back & watch this show with new eyes.

      there is a reason its in 13th place on IMDB list of best tv shows. but its not your typical cartoon, every line of dialogue is considered in the development of characters and it takes its time to reach the high points of the series and in my opinion is well worth it. just dont go expecting a shounen anime like naruto or dbz.

    For all the reason you listed I’d argue these are not simply throw away filer/bottle episodes. It would have been seriously jarring to see Aang go from mad over Appa’s capture to just plain depressed in the next episode where they have to get to Ba Sing Se. Likewise with Zuko admitting a truth about himself he’s always known setting him on the path in the next episode where he’s desperate for answers about the true nature of the fire nation’s war and his family’s involvement. (It directly parallels Aang learning the same things)
    Using whole episodes to progress character in this way has always been an advantage television has over movies where the most a movie would have is one scene or two to have a character change or grow so the next thing can happen. It can feel contrived at times. A show can use it’s run time to have characters grow more organically in this way. But then again not everyone has the patience to sit through a whole episode for that one thing to happen. Lol
    The key of course for both mediums is that the change or growth still has be interesting and believable.

    The thing is, the concept of a bottle episode applies very differently to animated shows, because the bulk of the money goes into, well.... animation. So when an animated show does a bottle episode, it's usually in the form of flashbacks: digging out old footage and maybe recoloring it a bit, sometimes with a voiceover. That's how you save money.
    The Desert and The Beach didn't do that. There were dozens of new things that they had to animate to make those episodes. They didn't do that by accident. It's frankly kind of a false equivalence, especially when you're comparing it to a show like Seinfield.

    Filler cannot just be 'Episodes that don't immediately advance the central plot" or you would end up with shows that seem to have little time for characters or world building. To me, a filler episode is one that contributes basically nothing to one of three elements: Plot, Character, World Building. Avatar actually has a kind of explicit take down of the kind of classic anime filler episodes that only exist for perv pandering and time wasting. They have the Fire Nation group go to the beach, wear swimsuits, and do general leisure activities. Yet even then, character growth and exploration is happening. If Avatar can do it, every show can do it.

    I disagree completely with the notion that the desert is a filler episode. Appa being stolen is a huge event and there needed to be an episode after the library that highlights how devastating it truly is for the Gaang that Appa is gone. We also need time to see Aang's reaction and the stages of emotions he goes through when dealing with Appa missing. Plus it would be kind of jarring to cut from the library to the Serpent's Pass without a proper explanation. The B storyline with Zuko and Iroh introduces the White Lotus. It also explains how Iroh got the tickets to Ba Sing Se. It also establishes that Xin Fu and Yu are still searching for Toph which adds tension to the narrative and makes them capturing her in the season finale feel more organic, and not like it came out of nowhere.

    Cowboy Bebop at times almost feels like the inverse of the "filler episode" concept. All but maybe 5 episodes are self-contained and don't affect the "main plot" (Spike's arc and some smaller arcs for other characters) but each episode gives time to explore the characters and see them react to and be subtly moved (or fail to be moved) by the worlds around them. It's a really unique format for a show and I wish it were more common, but it relies on having strong characters and writing to support it.

  • @Kevin-jb2pv

    I think a big part of why the characters work so well is because they all argue and bicker with each other _constantly._ But it's never anything truly _hateful,_ except in moments where someone _really_ fucks up or when the person saying something is _really_ hurt or angry. Mostly it's characters taking potshots at the others' idiosyncrasies, and then the targets generally get a little annoyed but just move on. These small interactions do so much to humanize the characters because it shows that they are all flawed in some way and that _these flaws don't go unnoticed by the other characters,_ but that they still appreciate what the others bring to the table even if they're not perfect.

    The scene at the end of "The Desert" is so unbelievable to me. It gets me into tears every time, with the emotion on screen that is clearly visible but also audible by the beautiful music. You can see the tears in Aang's eyes as you can feel exactly the same way he does after losing Appa. You can see Toph's face as it is the first time she sees Aang going into the Avatar state and thus it being her first time seeing Aang's real Avatar Power. This scene might be more emotional to me than the Leaves From The Vine scene.
