    That button on the side by the lens (the latch as you call it) that slides back is a Depth-to-Field preview. SLRs will always try to let as much light in as it can so you can see well through the view finder. Then when you take the shot the aperture will close to where you set it. When you slide that latch in, it’ll close aperture to where you have it set at on the lens so you can get an accurate D-T-F, but it’ll be quite a bit darker if you have it stepped down quite a bit. This only work s when you change the aperture on the lens, not on the camera in Av.
