  • In this video, we talk about diaphragmatic breathing. It's the basis of everything we do in Pilates, so it's an important topic! We'll go over what an ideal diaphragmatic breath looks like; explain it's connection to the deep core and pelvic floor; highlight some common less-than-ideal breathing patterns; and then practice it all!
    ROADMAP:
    00:45 What is diaphragmatic breathing?
01:35 Breakdown of proper diaphragmatic breath
04:17 Why is diaphragmatic breathing important in Pilates?
04:55 Three common breath pattern dysfunctions
    08:18 Practice
This video is part of my Intro to Pilates series. You don't need to do the entire series to benefit from this discussion - it's great for anyone looking to learn a little about diaphragmatic breathing! But if you do want to complete the whole series, there are videos that come before this class.
My Intro to Pilates video series is a mix of quick "lessons" (each lesson explains a different component of Pilates), short mini classes that each have a specific focus, and then total body beginner-friendly Pilates classes.

I've heard diaphragmatic breathing is also very useful for anxiety / stress management so I'm happy to learn more about it ad how to do it!

Yes! The diaphragm stimulates the vagus nerve, and the vagus nerve balances our parasympathetic (rest) and sympathetic (fight or flight) systems. So deep breathing can be great for relaxing and reducing anxiety. ❤️

I didn’t know that before however I could really feel the calming effects while practicing - lovely and another tool for the stress toolkit, thank you Nicole!

Your cueing in past videos completely changed my mat work for the better. I had a really hard time engaging my tva and finding a neutral spine until I found your videos. Still excited to complete this series though!
