  • 30% of the adult OSA population is predisposed to high loop gain. The only way to address high loop gain is to practice breathing exercises aimed at reducing the sensitivity of the body to carbon dioxide.
    In other words, learn the Buteyko Clinic Method. When your breathing is through the nose light, slow and deep using the diaphragm- your sleep quality will be significantly better. Measure whether you have loop gain by using breath hold time. If your comfortable breath hold time (control pause) is less than 20 seconds, it is indicative of high loop gain. Apply the Buteyko Method to reduce high loop gain during sleep apnea.
    Watch this video and learn how to measure loop gain and how to use slow breathing exercises to regulate it to the normal level.

    I just discovered the Buteyko breathing. Oh my Lord. I've been practicing a couple times a day and before sleeping for about 3 days. Last night and the night before I slept so good and w/o interruptions. I've been suffering from bruxism for years (like more than 20 yrs.), also suffer from panic attacks, heart palpitations, fight or flight response and they have minimized incredibly. This is nothing short of a miracle. This morning I woke up and my jaw didn't hurt, no headaches etc...etc...I want to shout this out from the rooftops. Words cannot express how thankful I am. I will continue to practice this breathing technique for I have many health ailments and hopefully this buteyko breathing will help. I'm so happy. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. God Bless you, God Bless you, God Bless you. I may even look into doing a course with you sir. I just need some time for more healing.

    Hi Patrick McKeown, thanks for everything you do. I have recently discovered you and ordered anxiety free and The Oxygen Advantage books. Have been taping at night and breathing through nose during the day. I have been using CPAP machine for last three years. Should I continue to use the machine? I have had reduction in number of apneas since following your advice. I'm worried that CPAP machine may be causing overbreathing during night (8+hours). Is it okay to continue using the machine? So grateful to you for sharing this life changing valuable information. Thank you.

      Hi Violin. Thanks for your interest in our method. We are glad to hear that it was helpful to you. Buteyko method and the exercises would be more appropriate in your case.
      It’s vital to maintain nasal breathing, slow breathing with correct tongue resting posture for sleep apnea. Also, you have to be careful about sleeping on the back as apneas double in 50% of people with sleep apnea.
      Nose breathing and breathing exercises can be applied with CPAP.
      Great approach is to raise your CP score first, and after you have consulted with the doctor, you could tape your mouth at night instead of using CPAP machine. But, the doctor would need to confirm if this is possible. Check out our next 2-hour online clinic with Patrick which is specifically for sleep issues including sleep apnea: www.buteykoclinic.com/clinic-with-patrick-mckeown/.
      This could be very helpful to you, considering your health condition.

    thank you. am going to try this. I just did the test. 13 seconds in, had to breathe. I have moderate OSA. and severe flare up of TMD since april 2023 (its sept 2023) and noticed alot of mouth breathing in night and waking up to dry mouth. Worse with TMJ flare up. Is there a relationship or studies on mouthguards worn at night, open mouth breathing with pts with OSA? I tried: no mouthguard (TMJ worsened), half the night with mouthguard (tmj worsened) and all night mouthguard (tmj same)-tmj is same (seeing P.T. , dentist who specializes in TMD and no help-they only know how to 'adjust' mouthguards', which does not get to 'root' of issue: bruxism. Loop cycle indeed of TMJ and OSA. Will try this method. I dont get clinically why one wants more CO2 in body (since we expel it), so if you could explain that more, would appreciate it. I get 'what method' does clinicially-but -why have more CO2, does it adjust over time ? thanks in advance

    How do you speak so fluidly without sucking air in through the mouth? Also been committed to nose breathing for the new year, when will my nose quit running. What am I doing wrong it is like I have a cold. The weather is cold outside I am an outdoors person is this normal to have a runny stuffy nose and I rarely get through the night with tapped mouth. Somewhere in the middle I can't get back relaxed enough to fall back to sleep. Tried the nose opening exercise, gets it open temporarily but returns to blockage soon after also I have tried to shorten breaths using diaphragm. Finally I peel the tape. I have committed to beat this comes hell or high water. Any advice?

    • @OxygenAdvantage
      @OxygenAdvantage 4 года назад +1

      Hi! I have a rule-try not to hear my breathing during talking. I don't always breathe through the nose during talking, as it disrupts the flow of sentences. Cold weather causes a runny nose. This is normal. Maybe wear a scarf across the face. In the time it reduces, but can still be present. Yes, your nose will remain stuffy until your BOLT score improves to at least 25 seconds. The nose clearing exercise is only temporary. The BOLT score needs to be higher for a clearer nose. Then the effect is much more permanent. Patrick

    Can someone tell me if this method would help a build up of lactic acid in my blood? I am having an abnormal amount of lactic acid build up from the slightest movement. I also have low blood pressure Drs have no idea my oxygen sat is 98% no heart issues

    • @ButeykoClinicInternational
      @ButeykoClinicInternational  4 года назад +1

      Hi. Yes. Persons with a lower CP measurement tire and become breathless more easily, produce more lactic acid, and do not have the stamina of those with higher CP scores. The higher the CP, the less air is required to walk, run a specific distance at a given pace. With each five second increase of the CP, physical performance will improve. Exercise or exertion in people who overbreathe can lead to anxiety palpitations, chest tightness or a whole range of other symptoms associated with overbreathing. Medical texts sometimes refer to the inability to exercise in these people as effort syndrome. Effort syndrome and hyperventilation are associated with excess production of lactic acid and excess loss of CO2.When we make energy anaerobically, we use no oxygen and make lactic acid as a by-product. Lactic acid is known to stimulate breathing. contributing to hyperventilation. This leads to a situation where bad breathing itself causes the production of a substance that leads to more bad breathing.

      @@Xbot4Life Hi, thank you for your interest in our method. During the 1960s Dr Konstantin Buteyko analyzed the data from hundreds of patients and developed the concept of ‘breath-hold time’ to measure how light or heavy we breathe - a measurement known as the Control Pause. On this page: buteykoclinic.com/the-control-pause/ you will find out in detail everything about the Control Pause and how it should be measured correctly.

    Wait isn't the narrowing of the airway or the obstruction that causes high loop gain in the first place?

    • @ButeykoClinicInternational
      @ButeykoClinicInternational  4 года назад +1

      Hi Shankar. People with narrow airways, often caused by mouth breathing during childhood are more prone to obstructive sleep apnea. The higher the loop gain, the potentially more unstable the respiratory control system becomes. A high loop gain promotes recurrent apnoeas as a response to an initial disturbances, such as a sigh, because it is over compensated, while a low loop gain dampens subsequent oscillations in breathing. People with high loop gain have exaggerated ventilatory responses to minimal changes in CO2. Practising breathing re-education can reduce the ventilatory response to CO2.
