- The Coquihalla highway and area suffers major washouts in the 2021 November rain storm. The river has no mercy as it take trees, bridges, roads, a motor home and car.

I was out there 3 weeks ago just as the heavy rain was starting, and stopped at the truckstop at Hope.
There’s a helicopter base right across the road from the truckstop and the helicopters were up and practicing transporting people from a ground pickup, using the cable. Lifting them up and transporting to another onsite location a quarter mile away. Dropping them off onto the ground, coming back to the original spot, picked up two people the next time and transporting them still on the end of the cable, to where they dropped off the first one. They did this in the fog and rain for over an hour.
Now they get to do this in real time as a real rescue.
My hat is off to these dedicated souls. A lot of respect for this.
So they knew something was coming. ???
Our Armed Forces are amazing. Talk about timing. The really work hard at readiness. Much respect. Love them. We are really lucky to have them.
@@conformealcorazondeDios15 I don’t think anybody saw this coming. This was a random rescue training operation. More for mountain rescue of individuals stranded in the snow. And that happens every year.
These people have never seen the amount of rain that they got here this year.
I don’t know the exact amount, but it was close to 27 inches of rain in a week. Mountains everywhere… and it all flows downhill. That’s why Merrit is totally flooded out. They’re down in the valley with mountains flanking on all sides.

That was mine and my fiancé’s car and rv, we had to leave our truck and cube van on the other side of caroline mines while we were airlifted out.

did the helicopter land near you or were you midair lifted in the basket or?
They landed near us, we lived in that rv, we lost our rv, and 3 vehicles along with everything we owned other than a pair of clothes
Thank you for posting, at the same time it hurts because everything we worked for; our lives were washed away, but we got out with our actual lives when there was times we weren’t certain we would make it out at all.
I personally feel that because me with family drive from Kelowna through Merritt , Princeton , Hope , Chilliwack To Abbotsford 6 Hrs. continuous in rain It was terrible. thanks god we come to home safely.
Stay at home . The best place to be unless you live in the flooded area.👍

Same here I was driving from princton the day the rains and the flooding and all the landslides happened, their was a few washout that happened less then a hundred feet from our car, im really fortunate we didn't get stuck or worse, but im really feeling for the families who are being hit by this, especially the farmers
We have a big campaign in Australia from our Emergency Services and it is really drilled into us - IF IT’S FLOODED, FORGET IT!!
Please don’t drive through water, you never know what has happened to the road/ground underneath. So many people lose their lives this way. Stay safe!
In Oklahoma we are prone to having flash floods, our motto: “Don’t drown, go around.” The power of water is not to be taken lightly. Prayers for everyone in harm’s way.

I live in North Queensland, roads can disappear during floodwaters. The amount of people that drive through seemingly shallow, fast moving water, only to sink up to their windows. Not just that, high tide along with the flood can blow manhole covers off the stormwater lines, the cars I've seen stuck cause the wheels fallen down a 600mm wide manhole shaft.

As someone who almost died in my car during recent floods in NJ, I can assure you this guy was taking his life in his hands driving in that water. Literally one second is all it takes to take your car wherever it wants.

Here in Queensland the government , every year posts warnings every year with the message " if it's flooded,forget it!" but every year a 4x4 or car gets washed away and people drown.

And give me one name of someone who was executed for manipulating the weather. Holding a belief in a “man upstairs” whichever “man” you believe in,(there’s roughly 8,000) is arguably dangerous. There is nobody to answer us, we need to solve our problems on our own and if we don’t then there are natural consequences. Holding that belief makes many feel comfortable with ignoring things that matter. Either they think someone is in control and we need to leave it to them, or that intervening will somehow be an insult to this imaginary character. Either way it’s a terrible excuse to just sit back and not act. Fun fact for you too, when lights, particularly street lights, were invented the catholic church tried to push back on their invention and installation because they thought it was perfectly clear when god wanted us to see and when he did not, meaning day and night. So the belief in a higher deity unarguably causes problems and resistance for our society moving forward.

My Dad built those bridges, and the footings are strong, but seeing years of his work get so heavily damaged breaks my heart. He says we are looking at approx 3 to 6 months for repairs like this...

3-6 months in a time when you have materials readily available. I'd be very surprised if they have it back open next summer (apart from building it into a temporary dirt road.

Please leave this to the drones. Too many people need rescuing, already. Be safe.
Even drones shouldn't be flying when rescue helicopters are present (or not in this case firefighting aircraft are near).
I understand your point however and agree these guys should not have been taking risks when the emergency services were already overwhelmed.

You can't see it in this video, but later there are several steamshovels parked mere meters from the edge of the bridge. So if they're fine, he's fine.

Seeing this devastation puts a chill down my spine. Brings back a lot of the memories of the 2013 Alberta floods. Be safe out there.
Having lived through that, I doubt I'll ever forget it. Repairs to Bow river banks in Calgary are still ongoing, 7 yrs later.

I was just happy that most of the resurfacing of the asphalt and related repairs on the Coquahalla were pretty much done for the season…

Engineers and fix don't go together
Engineers will tell people how they want to fix it. The actual tradesmen will tell them half their ideas don't work in reality and fix it the way they know that works in the real world. Not some imagined cartoon on a piece of paper with no idea how to realize it.

I know right the comments from people about driving thru water compared to the standing on bridges that are very likely to collapse any moment and having no clue the danger they are in.
It has always amazed me how the ignorant avoid death and serious injury. Just think if they were washed away or the asphalt collapsed underneath them we’d need to put warning signs up on ever bridge not to walk or drive on it in a wash out conditions

It's like you found the most dangerous spot to stand every time and started filming. Fantastic footage, but I can't keep it to myself that is absolutely beyond stupid to stand on a bridge that is literally collapsing as you stand on it. Then to keep doing it on and around all the other bridges.
Thanks for the concern Jacob, the footage only shows a portion of what actually went on. The Stebros are all trained professionals. Matt and Jer have been trained with Search and Rescue, they spent many years doing highway recovery. Mark was in law enforcement and trained in risk management.

Unbelievable! Had breakfast at a rest area in the same area a few years back. Peaceful summer morning. River flowing fast and crystal clear. Hard to believe it's the same river!
Its nature can change rapidly in response to a lot of water getting dumped in a short time. Awestruck with the volume and speed going down those channels...
standing in front of a washing out bridge with water rushing TOWARD you perhaps is not the smartest thing one can do.

Damn. I recognize a lot of the area because when I was a child my family would occasionally visit and I’m a fan of the show “Highway Thru Hell”.
Nice job presenting the actual situation. The regular news has been too vague. This footage prepares us for a realistic minimal 1-2 month outlook on repair (temporary bailey bridges) work for this travel corridor.
My work has had me traveling this route every week for the past 7yrs. Thankfully new contracts have enabled me to no longer depend on this routine. I feel for others whose way of life will be heavily impacted. Be safe. Hang in there!

I stayed with those sources just to see what they had out of frustration having married a Canadian and lived in the Lower Mainland for 12 years before the call of the Big Job Opportunity drew us here in the 90's and we never went back. But the online CBC feed is almost as useless. Thank God the netizens are getting out there and providing us with the real footage and locations, etc. I can imagine a time when people getting paid to be journalist will virtually disappear because this is what all their efforts produce, You stay safe out there, too!

1-2 months isn’t plausible, the damage is far too extensive. Also, concrete doesn’t cure in subzero temps.

Omg unbelievable! How r they gonna fix the overpass on the coquihalla this time of year ? If you’re not battling rushing waters you’ll be battling snow ice freezing temps what a engineering nightmare ! Winter hasn’t even begun .
it's not even that, the problem will be getting the steel beams and other materials in.

It’s so sad what happened this passed weekend. I’ve lived on Vancouver Island for most of my life and I have never experienced rainfall to this degree in such a short span of time. I am truly worry about our supply chain. I hope everyone in the affected parts of B.C. are safe.
Same. I was born in Victoria (52 years ago) and never experienced that much rain in two days ever. We really need an alternative to the Malahat!

The US is having problems with its supply chain. Groceries are being depleted. Shelves left with small amounts of food. I hope that you can get supplies in to all the people caught in this storm.
@@djamesv Born in Brandon Manitoba, but have lived on Vancouver Island since 1953, and yup this particular atmospheric river is unprecedented in our lifetimes, but I wouldn’t bet that something as damaging can’t happen again before the end of this decade. The only thing I do feel confident to predict is the complete lack of will (some might make an anatomical reference) of any political party to spearhead the campaign to build such an additional artery along an already identified route; but several more million dollar studies, well, hell yeah.

Great video, this is unbelievable. I don't think people understand how bad this is yet. With that bridge gone and others as well, Highway 1 is dead for traffic in either direction. This could last for a long time. The main arteries feeding into and out of the lower mainland are essentially cut off. That washed out section near Lytton has completely cut the Fraser Canyon off from detouring through Kamloops. The Princeton Highway through Manning Park has washouts and slides too. This is big-time and the effects on millions of people does not look good.
How are the rail lines doing?

Please DO NOT drive into any area where the road is covered with water! It is difficult to know how deep or how fast the water is flowing!!

Sadly reinds me of when Fran came thru the Shenandoah valley hitting us hard. I lived just outside of Luray at the time almost didn't get home all roads washed out, had neighbors lose everything.
What a catastrophic event. I won't like this video only because of all the loss everywhere. So sad. God help and God bless all that are affected. Sure wished all that water could be diverted to Lake Powell and lake mead, and all the lakes in California. Be safe everyone. 🙏

@@macking104 Nope not the north we still have full highway connections east and west. Those flood waters are impossible to reach the north as we`re 800 meters plus above sea level.

Water is the most destructive force on this planet for sure.
Man, that is frigging crazy. I always drove the Coq when I lived in BC. It is so strange to see the highways and roads in these conditions. Very surreal! Watching a tree fall and get swept away in real time.
Always used to go up the Coquihalla on summer vacation. So sad to see all the damage caused by this storm.

Unreal so crazy! Here on the Southern Gulf Islands you wouldn't even know we had all that rain. High and dry here. I feel for people that lost so much in those floods on the mainland
The roads will be rebuilt next year. The homes , sadly aren't covered by this loss, but I'm more saddened by cows and hogs drowning in their stalls

Home insurance should cover overland flooding I believe. One would hope. It takes years for an area to recover and get anywhere back to normal. Ask anyone that was in Calgary and southern Alberta from 2013 on. Expect everyone's insurance to jump, regardless of where you live in Canada.

@@alan4sure I checked with our home insurance and due to living near a flood plain they only cover us for $5,000 with a $2,000 deductable. 😐 Luckily we didn't get flooded this time.

Even with federal help, the army and airforce and if all the road work and construction guys from the whole country came out there it’s going to take months to fix all the bridge damage alone.

You can tell there is a lot of friction and banging between the debris by how the bark is stripped from the trees floating there. Any boat would be crushes to bits.
