learning to play the whistle has made me greatly appreciate my "big hands for a girl" hands lol. I went straight to playing the low d whistle and i can actually cover the holes fine without using the piper's grip
(i do have a bit of experience playing an aulos keyless tenor recorder, if that means anything. that tenor was the first recorder i started playing and learning to stretch my hands for that was a little hard at first, but i think that's what bridged the gap for me playing the whistle, rather than getting a messo whistle)

I must be the odd one out - I enjoy piper's grip and I've drifted away from most high whistles, except my high D. I don't feel like piper's grip is inferior despite what people say elsewhere. But I play for my own pleasure and any idiosyncrasies are all part of the pleasure :)

i just got a low c susato, loving it! my first low whistle was d because i figured since it's the best to start out with soprano, i figured it would be best for low as well. Boy that low c was a stretch, though

That was my thinking!! I just bought a Low G, in hopes of transitioning to a low D.
I wish I saw this video before I purchased the low G, but oh well, I am still excited and curious to try out the G when it arrives.
    Thanks for making this video!
    You play beautifully!❤

How did it go with the Low G? Did you end up using it much? I would think the main reason for using it (just like a low E) would be its beautiful stand-alone tone for practice and solo playing. IMHO it offers a bit more of a dynamic sound to a song than the Low D... but that doesn't help so much when you have to pick back up a Low/high D for playing any sessions.

I have been playing Tin Whistle for a year, I decided to buy a low D whistle that will arrive in the coming weeks. The difficulty will be for me to get used to placing my fingers on the instrument, having small hands I hope not to make too much effort to close the holes well.
    Thanks for the tutorials

Ciao! Posso chiederti come ti sei trovato? Sei riuscito ad abituarti anche senza acquistare un flauto medio di transizione? Perché vorrei passare anch'io al low d ma ero indecisa se prenderne prima uno intermedio o meno

I bough an A whistle because I haven't played any flute ever and wanted a low D but it looks like it's too much for a beginner and it was quite expensive. The A is somewhat in the middle so I can do the normal grip or pipers grip. If I really like it and practice a lot, as a reward I'll buy a nice quality low D 😃

Good playing - like the fact you are keeping it straight without too many ornamentations. Great sounds on the Howard Low D - I am keen to getting those pine green ones.

Thanks for this. I'm looking for a new whistle, as I feel like I'm "growing out" of my Walton's, even though I have a lot of technical learning to do.

Thank u! this helped immensely :) however, another issue has me discombobulated. ever since hearing Tamison's hauntingly beautiful version of "Fig For a Kiss" i cant get the tune out of my head!? i hear it in the morning upon waking... i hear it when i lay me down to sleep... and i hear it in the background wherever i go. Thanks Tamison (i think)

This is useful; I actually bought a Burke carbon composite Ab whistle, and honestly never went any lower! Ha! I should try, but I was so happy with that one instrument. Now I feel more confident, yes, to try a G, F, maybe even E/Eb. I can barely get a sound out of a low D, the piper's grip doesnt seem to work! I play fiddle mainly, so my fingers are long, but my hands are "slim" I guess?? Like incapable of piper gripping a low D. lol. I love Bb and Ab whistles, but I should try some more!

Do you find the Howard Low D has a high medium or low amount of air to play? I have tried some in the past that have had such high air volume I was unable to play them. Thanks for the video.

I play almost exclusively Anasazi flute and Xiao and learning pipers grip has been a PITA but also a necessity.
Anasazi usually has root notes of A3, Bb3, or B3.
And Xiao is usually D4 or C4 though B3 is around and available.
On Anasazi in A or Xiao in B pipers grip is basically required for me.

My question is Do I really attempt to learn the fingerings for the G whistle which I did buy one or just play it out of key all the time since I usually play by myself. Somewhere I read if you play a G in the fingerings of a D it comes out as the key of C. I don’t know if it was for that particular song or for all songs. Oh so much to learn in this new hobby of mine. Thank you for playing you’re very much of an inspiration

Hi!! Thanks so much for this video! I’ve just inherited a low G whistle and I’ve never played any other before. I realize the D whistles would be maybe more “standard,” but this is the one that I’ve got. Are there any low G whistle books or tunes that you recommend? I don’t know where to begin! Thanks again!

Do they make a Low G3 6 hple whistle? Whom, where and how much-would it cost? Could a Key be added for the reach of the low tone for intonation and ease of playability?
