Given the original song was from the 70's. It's no surprise you thought of that. Many songs from Gundam were trying to fit with the times of the 70's, given the The Beetles music was popular and really garnered peoples attention. Having music like theirs would bring people who like Beetles styled music to Gundam as well if they didn't care for the the overall animation as much. Though granted, the song from the 70's was only used in the movies, it did gain the attention needed to change the way we see robot anime.
