I was lucky enough to spend my teen years growing up in this region. Had the best summers of my life. What canoe route did you take. It looks like you went past La Roque Gageac.
We visited the area, camping, then in a Motorhome, for over 30 years. Now we live here, about 1km out of Dordogne, in Lot-et-Garonne. It just started feeling like we couldn't live anywhere else. No regrets after 4 years.

Those bugs are cicadas and you can tell how hot it is by the frequency of the noise they make - the hotter, the louder.
