I just want to let you know that I really admire the insight you have when you talk about books that I would never be able to verbalize myself. I think it's a gift to be able to speak your thoughts in a direct manner. For example when you started out talking about Sorrowland and you made the connection that so many happy places have the word Land at the end, I thought "oh wow I would have never drawn that connection but it's so true". I would have just looked at that title and just never really think about its real or interpreted meaning. So I just want to tell you that I am always captivated by your discussion on books. I think it's part of what makes you so good at making personalized book recommendations. You really see what's in between the lines.
That triangle shaped thing behind you makes me think of the folding paper game we all played as kids where your friend picks a number & you fold/shift it back & forth with both hands, etc.
a BIG recommendation for a book with a similar vibe as death in her hands is Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by olga tokarcuk! inner monologue, evocative setting, weird happenings, gorgeous prose, animals being accused of getting revenge on humans by murdering them… i think you would love it as much as i did!!! sounds right up your alley :)
Glad to see you promote Sorrowland. I thought it was one of the most distinct and creative books from last year, and hopefully more people read it because of you.
Really enjoyed Death in Her Hands as well-the journey it goes through is so meta and surreal! About to check out Eileen (also by Ottessa Moshfegh) soon. You have sold me on Other Words for Smoke!
I knew you'd love Sorrowland! I had this in a random library pickup where my library does blind bags based on genre you like and they pick 3, 5 or 10 titles depending on how many you want and this was my fave of the group they gave me.
I would love and need a book organization video. Not a bookshelf organization video but how you fit it all in your house? I am struggling on how to utilize wall space efficiently.
I was so worried you were going to give Sorrowland a bad rating... as soon as I started it I was thinking you would love it! So glad to see you also gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
i’m so glad you enjoyed death in her hands; it was my first read of the new year as well as my first five star :) i love the way the title appears in the book itself near the end….very clever imo
oh my gosh im so relieved you liked Death in Her Hands. its my favorite of Moshfegh's books! i had a feeling you may enjoy it. i also definitely read it as metafiction and loved that part of it! its so dark but playful, and Vesta is such a vivid character.
I loved Only Mostly Devastated! It was one of my favorite books for 2020. It is so interesting how different people can have different thoughts on books.
So excited you loved Death in Her Hands! I read it as an arc and LOVED it but no one else has seemed to share the same feeling 😆💁♀ Being marketed as a thriller, when its not, for sure didn't do it any favors. I don't read much ya but I think I'm going to give Other Words for Smoke a go. Sounds like something I would love. Looks like you had a good reading month with all those 4 & 5 stars, yay! Love that.
For an organizational idea: what about showing Liam all the books you read and having him put them in order of his most liked to least liked (or vice versa) covers?
The books you gave the highest rating to had the titles you liked. Do you think because you liked the book so much it then made you have more affinity for the title? Like if you had not read the book just read the title do you think you would still like those titles more?
I wanna read All My Rage and The Blood Trials. I've been seeing many reading Robin Hobb. But I will definitely be reading Tahir. one of my favorite reads of 2022 so far is Cantoras by Carolina de Robertis
I loved your insights on Sorrowland! I really enjoyed it as well, even if the body horror aspects crept past what I can usually handle (I'm a weenie🙈) . I know you've disliked a lot of cult books in the past and have said you think you just don't like them in general, so what's different about Sorrowland for you? Is it that it was just written better in your opinion or was the cult aspect used in a way that worked better for you?
I have two very short stories you might enjoy from a book called Upright Beasts by Lincoln Michel. One is called Things Left Outside, and you can find it for free online
I really really didn’t like Death in Her Hands, it was a one start read for me. I picked it up because My Year of Rest and Relaxation, by the same author was a five star read for me.
God when my iPad first pulls up a RUclips video, the like button is in one spot but as soon as I hit like, it shifts and makes me hit dislike 😡 sorry if you got a dislike notification! It’s ALWAYS like for your videos.

Just finished teaching and now I have to sit in my office from 11-2. This video came at the perfect time! 🥰
I’m killing time from 11-2, too! Glad we’re in this together! 😂

You've sold me on Death in Her Hands, Sorrowland, and Other Words For Smoke. I want to read those three ASAP!

Ahh! I love when you share weird books. The smoke book wasn’t even on my radar and it’s now going to happen. I’m also stoked even more for Sorrowland.
Sorrowland is so good--easily one of my best reads of last year. I agree, the title is pretty perfect for the story
I am excited for your Ottessa Moshfegh era 💕
I put "The Resting Place" on hold with Libby, so I'll see how it goes. Thank you for the wrap-up!
I hope you love it so much!!
I am in a huge reading slump, so I am hoping this video inspires me to read again❤
Same!
I’ve been sick all week and this video is just what I needed ❤️
I KNEW you would love Other Words for Smoke! Sarah Maria Griffin is a fantastic Irish author
I would love and need a book organization video. Not a bookshelf organization video but how you fit it all in your house? I am struggling on how to utilize wall space efficiently.
Ahh I have Rivers Solomon and Ottessa Moshfegh on a list of authors to read from at some point! Love your wrap up style Kayla!!
I was so worried you were going to give Sorrowland a bad rating... as soon as I started it I was thinking you would love it! So glad to see you also gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just cleaned my house and I’m ready for a new video. Yay!
Hope things are going well for your month off. You read a lot of March, and these were great insights.
I KNEW you were going to love Sorrowland! Yay! One of my favorites! 🌿
i’m so glad you enjoyed death in her hands; it was my first read of the new year as well as my first five star :) i love the way the title appears in the book itself near the end….very clever imo
Oh I loved Other Words for Smoke! It was so good.

Also random but i really think you should try The End We Start From by Megan Hunter!!
I loved Only Mostly Devastated! It was one of my favorite books for 2020. It is so interesting how different people can have different thoughts on books.
I'm excited to read Sorrowland, it sounds so good and interesting.
I think you will like the April pick! I really loved it and it seems like it will be a winner for you
I'm halfway through and having a great time!!
Literally just realizing you told me not to pick a book about an old person and then I made you read death in her hands LOL
hahahaha but I gave it 5 stars so I'm the clown
Finally someone who's talking about Other words for Smoke!! I loved that weird little book so much
I wanna pick up Sorrowland and The Weight Of Our Sky. They sound so interesting and my cup of tea.
Can you please do an updated bookshelf tour? I really enjoyed your last one. 🙂
Like everyone else is saying: MOSHFEGH for the win! Vlog her backlist!!! Pleaseeeee
WOOO I clapped so hard when you gave Death in Her Hands 5 Stars. I wonder if you'll enjoy Moshfegh's other work.

Excited to get to some of these titles soon! Unbury Carol sounds especially interesting to me! Great video, as always!! ❤️
The Darkness Outside Us wrecked me in the best way possible
I have Sorrowland and after your review, I will begin to read it.
I love The Literally Dead Book Club! February 5🌟 March 3🌟 so looking forward to the rest of the year!
Perfect way to start the weekend 🙌🏻
The way you talk about liking books that is weird is just 😍
For an organizational idea: what about showing Liam all the books you read and having him put them in order of his most liked to least liked (or vice versa) covers?
you read so many books! i'm hoping to read more in april
Yay!!! Just what I needed. Btw, Bunny was crazy……thank you.
Also, if you like internal monologues, what about Ducks, Newburyport? That books still haunts me. I need to read it but it’s not easy.
I love inheritance troupes also! Any suggestions of some newer fresher books with this troupe?
The books you gave the highest rating to had the titles you liked. Do you think because you liked the book so much it then made you have more affinity for the title? Like if you had not read the book just read the title do you think you would still like those titles more?

"but also like...the darkness that exists... Shut up, Kayla." - I died.
Unbury carol sounds so good!!!

Sorrowland sounds so good 👀
Just leaving you a 🧡 to let you know I was here, watched all of it and loved it all!
"do we have something more upfligting next?"
"oh death in her hands"

booksandlala better and definetely more efficient than therapy if you ask me!
I pick up so many books just because the title is intriguing 😂
I loved your insights on Sorrowland! I really enjoyed it as well, even if the body horror aspects crept past what I can usually handle (I'm a weenie🙈) . Now that I'm back from sage's video I think "Manchester by the Sea" is THE movie that you should absolutely avoid based on your fear.
have you read eileen by ottessa moshfegh? the themes sound really similar to death in her hands. i think you should pick it up if you haven't already.
your description of death in her hands gave me bunny vibes. would you recommend it to mona awad fans??
i’m listening to bad feminist by roxanne gay because of you and really enjoying it!!!
Adding Other Words for Smoke to my tbr 🤗
I kinda liked The Paris Apartment for a title given a twist in the story
I wish we could get the centaurs wife in the uk 😭
Vlog idea: read books with characters named Kayla.
I jumped when you said Rachel but ‘‘twas not I. But I’m fully awake now
maybe this means you should do a video where you read the books on your tbr with your favourite titles👀
👀👀👀
Great video!
I don't think I heard a rating for The Darkness Outside Us? I'm currently reading it, and idk, I might DNF. Should I keep goin?
Oops sorry, it was a 4! I thought the reveals were super interesting, so I would say yes, continue!
I have two very short stories you might enjoy from a book called Upright Beasts by Lincoln Michel. One is called Things Left Outside, and you can find it for free online
The other is called Colony

First and best
😍😍😍
👻💚 some sound interesting
💕💕💕
So did everyone have a reading slump in March?
literally read nothing last month😢
👍🏻🤩

This gave me the push to unhaul only mostly devastated. I didn’t like it either.
