Yes 'sexually pessimistic' is a mistranslation. What it actually is 'grade pessimistic/성적 비관' (in Korea many teenagers have a lot of pressure of having good school grade). This mistranslation probably happened because Korean word '성적' can mean two things 'grade' and 'sexual'.

Ikr while it’s fun seeing a character essentially get a isekai power up to make themselves strong enough to kill everything it gets repetitive when everyone starts doing that & instead doesn’t try to improve their flaws.
That’s why I gravitate more towards high school series that deal with bully issues because they CANT have them die or shit like that the MC must actually become stronger while improving their life in the process showing us how different they were from the start compared to the end of the story besides physically.

  • @jikemusic8081
    @jikemusic8081 4 месяца назад +293

You should read To Not Die (its not a revenge manga in the traditional sense). The MC gets bullied, attacks his bully, but faces punishments. He gets kicked out of his home by his parents and ends up homeless, and then its just a story of him growing up with his homless "fam" and slowly learning how to fight (at least in the first half). The second half is where the "revenge" concept comes into play, but it wasn't against his high school bully, but an international gang leader that killed the leader of his fam that took him in. Really good, but not stupidly eccentric.

Hajime no Ippo was the best bully revenge. Ippo showed that he could beat Umezawa in a fight, but chose mercy. He spent absolutely zero energy or ill will towards his bully from that point on, and even allowed him to befriend him and work with his family. It overall improved both of their lives for the better and was inspiring. I used to get bullied a lot and I had that Bully Revenge energy that a lot of your detractors on that video seem to have. I wanted to destroy my bullies, but seeing a media depiction of reconciliation and redemption for what's usually just cannon fodder for the protagonist's abilities really opened my eyes. I didn't have to be angry anymore. I didn't need to fixate on the worst years of my life, exchanging my time in the now as I wallowed in the past, I dunno. It was a hell of a lot more inspiring than "You should beat your bullies up."
Hajime no Ippo for the above stated paragraph, and Vinland Saga's "I have no enemies" have changed my life for the better.

it's not like i don't agree with you on the topic of bullying in most places, however, considering where manhwa are made, there are many cases of bullying that are a group of kids picking on one single "weaker" kid, and the violence and bullying escalates from smaller things to bigger things. It does happen, and is probably more common than we assume. At this point the fact that it's such a huge trope in Korean media, indicates that it's likely a significant problem there. That's not me arguing for the one-dimensional bullies, I want them to have character development as well. I'm just saying bullying looks different country to country, case to case, and is often a systemic issue.

I think you're onto something and trends in media do indicate something about society producing them. However, it's also incredibly easy to draw wrong conclusions. Isekais start with truck-kun, so am I supposed to take away the lesson that Japanese roads are some of the world's unsafest and truckers the most incompetent? Or can we both agree that that's just the common trope other mangakas / light novel authors are following Yu Yu Hakusho and few other classics because they lack originality and more than often aim for familiarity?
It could be the same with bully revenge fantasies. Maybe significant part of the South Korean kids are bullied that severely, or maybe the need for these violent revenge fantasies is caused by something more complex and less tangible, like society that represses its citizens and those citizens then seeking fulfillment in somewhat extreme, yet harmless ways. Or this was just a stupid trend that caught on because it's same kind of low effort escapism like harems and isekais. It's really hard to say without further context.

Actually I feel I can defend all three as just as good as Shark on the "revenge on bully" alone part:
The boxer : is the easiest because the bully character has the same characterisation as Seok who now that I think about it, has the same characterisation as Bakugo from MHA
Unordinary : there is an arc where the MC gets revenge on his bullies while never breaking a sweat but there's nothing glorious about it because the other characters already moved on and tell him as much "We're trying to dismantle a terrorist group, we don't have time for your tamper tantrums"
"Weak Hero" this one is the closest to a revenge bullied story, but there is some nuance, the MC looks dominant but we know it would cost him greatly if he ever slipped up, the antagonists are all irredeemable jerks, but they are 14 different flavours of jerks.

Finally someone fucking gets it. Rooftop Swordmaster was garbage, and didn’t at all feel like I could impart myself onto the MC. Shark did that. I’m a victim of a lot of shit and bullying is on the lower end of the totem pole, yet it still gave me PTSD. Before even knowing about this manhua I’ve been working on improving myself physically and mentally. I’ve never been to juvi but this character is so much like me it’s fascinating. I’ve spent the last 6 years of my life with only one goal, to turn myself into a living weapon. Not for revenge, not for some sort of bloodlust or justice or anything like that. Just to protect what’s dear to me, and God help any poor soul that dare threaten it. Fights are almost never one sided. You don’t come out of one unscathed, ever. To do so means you’re the bully, and it wasn’t a fight. This MC and I share this in common, we don’t care what others think about us, and we aim to be greater and more terrible than those who seek to hurt us. To be a a worse monster. Though I don’t want anything to do with professional fighting, it is a thrill to throw hands that I wish Id known when I was younger. At the end of the day, anyone who’s wronged me in the past is forgiven but not forgotten, and the only thing that matters is what I want and how I’m going to get there. This fuckin author gets it.

As someone who was bullied for years (not anymore thank God), I've always thought: "Look, I need to better myself. Getting bullied was a learning experience, and I have to grow from it.". Never in my life would I have thought: "I was bullied, might as well do some unhinged and evil shit to get my revenge."
I read these bully manhwas, not because they're masterpieces (cause most of them are bad), but because I like seeing them throw hands. Especially when they use real-life fighting styles, such as boxing, karate, taekwondo, etc.

I'm offended that this series isn't talked about more. I just learned about it, and I want the entire thing translated.
What I love the most about this manwha is the table flip of who's enacting revenge. With Se Young in RTSM, he does so many heinous actions to his bullies and other poor suckers after being given a buster sword and the body of Hulk, but the manwha bends over backwards to try to make him the hero and his vengence "justified."
Meanwhile in Shark, Seokchan also is overpowered and vengeful...but he's not the one being bullied: he IS the bully. HE'S THE VILLAIN, WHO'S *SUPPOSED* TO BE IRREDEEMABLE AND OVERPOWERED. He's like RTSM's bullies, but HE'S the OP and chilishly vengeful one that refuses to give up until they reach their goal. He's not a coward when his back's against the wall either; dude has nuts the size of watermelons. Instead of Cha Woo-Sol being a total demon, making the audience goe "he's just gonna flatten Seokchan; how boring," it's SEOKCHAN who's the vindictive demon, making the audience go "OH MY GOD, WOO-SOL IS GOING TO DIE."

But I had my fair bit of problems regarding dealing with bullies. The biggest one beeing that I almost choked one out.
I tried anger managment , I tried therapy , but what really helped me out was martial arts , I've been training for about 11 years and I can say I have changed for the better , I have grown to be more mature , more confident , more skillful and , overall , I like to think I've turned into a better person , long past are the days of trying to harm someone cause they pushed too many buttons , and , long past are the days of letting myself be pushed around like a sandbag.

Ngl my life and the MC's life is somewhat similar, but not similar enough to be almost 1 to 1, but there is this one point that's similar enough to be almost 1 to 1 and that is the stabbing part, well the difference is almost all the guys is shitting on me, and the bully he stab and i almost stab is has a different sport, his is a boxer while mine is a judoka and the similarities only met at me snapping and the stabbing, because he run inside of a convenient store, so the guard stopped me from entering so i waited for him to go out and then his mom came and made us "do peace", and now for the reason for me to snap is him punching a chest dead center, and after that i trow away the thought of probability of what might happen to me and my mother after i kill him because all of my thoughts after he punch me is to kill him, and after the "fight" (it wasn't really a fight it's just him running and me chasing him) the mom of the bully didn't escalate it any further, and i got to go home and cry out of anger because i didn't kill him, but my mom made me realize that what would have happened IF i did kill him, that it would only ruined my whole life, but the bullying is not done after that, they kept shitting on me and my blood lust would keep on rising after that day.

I just caught up to where you leave off in the recap and something that really made me appreciate it all so much is when the protagonist sits down with two former gang bosses and just drinks and talks with them. Instead of further diving into the hatred and dislike, he briefly wonders if he can perhaps sit and laugh and drink like that with the bully too. He did not leave his humanity behind. not one bit. Even after everything. I think that's what makes a person truly strong. Not some overly power fantasy cheap ass revenge drive that destroys everything and leads to just more suffering in the end.

Good video, but I do have some comments abt stuff you said regarding certain manwhas, 47:48 first of all, I don’t think the point of Lookism is just “If you were more attractive, your life would be better”. Although that’s seemingly what happens, not only does the fat version of the mc try to improve himself despite already having a 2nd body which is perfect, he also actively defends those who are judged for their looks. You literally see som characters like Duke not simply becoming an oncle, and instead pursuing his dreams, I’d say the message of Lookism is really more just to become comfortable with who you are, no matter if you want to lose weight or not.

Liked the way you presented this story and plan to read and support it. I was a bully victim and this felt like the most relatable story to me. I think all normal healthy bully victims have limits and these mangas/manwhas often go fantasyland with it and it's not cathartic watching the protags entire family and friend circle be defensless to a bunch of teens then get instant power ups or find a magical teacher that trains them to become olympic level athletes. This shows the other side of the coin of bully victims who fight win or lose which is what most of us end up doing BEFORE the bullying gets to a point where it costs us our humanity. I learned that Bullying is a low effort and cowardly sport they won't bother you if you are a difficult target, it runs on fear not real strength.

The mc going crazy after genuinely getting betrayed's entire purpose was to give the other characters, development and try to better pple after they realize they were just as bad as him for abusing their powers. Plus he was never justified for his actions they made it clear he was the bad guy and had deeper mental issues than "i was bullied, i must have revenge" and got humbled hard. Plus they took time to actually redeem him than immediately making him good again
But it's a matter of perspective, i think it's fine series knowing what it was trying to aim at... but not surprised if pple don't like it if they take it at face value

It helps to make you conscious of certain things related to it or things just tangential to ADHD and gives you the assurance and awesomeness to better yourself. Even with medication, ADHD doesn't magically go away. Both help you grasp ADHD to be able have mental control over it and be able to utilize it in a nondetrimental way. Despite "Disorder" and "Deficit" being in the name, it is not a disorder. In addition, there is no lack of attention. It is just the extremely strong compulsion to mentally focus attention on something that only interests the person at that moment, which is why it seems someone with ADHD will be fixated on a past subject, "zone out", or seem to have their focus jump to seemingly unrelated things.

“Revenge is what a loser would do against a winner” bruh I swear to God if Manwha writers just realised this!!😭😭😭😭
Also your point about this exaggeration actually hit different,
Now I know this probably sounds like a reach but this is exactly the way I feel about Dubbed Goku vs Toriyama’s Goku
In the Dub of DBZ Goku is portrayed in that series as a superman esc character who’s the “saviour of the universe” to me personally I usually find this adaptation boring because it feels fake and exaggerated it doesn’t feel real at all
However in Toriyama’s original vision (Rest in peace) Goku is an actual character
He makes mistakes and is GENUINELY selfish at times
This struck to me especially when Goku dies against cell instead of a cheasy goodbye Goku owns up he says that he “was selfish and did whatever” HE wanted
This hits hard because a lot of parents do this, having an expectation that your child should just be another you instead of them and I’m glad Toriyama actually took Goku’s main characteristic of loving battle and used it to make Goku screw up like a person and have him OWN it
There’s so many examples I could choose from but my point is what Manhwa writers miss is that you can’t just make your characters have one trait and nothing else you have to BUILD off that trait
(Not really sure how I linked Manhwa with Shonen but you can use any sort of media and come to the same conclusion)

So having just read all of Shark after watching this video (btw thanks for the rec and great job on the video), I'm not sure Shark really counts as a "bully revenge" manhwa. It's a great series, but imo it's more of a full-on martial arts manhwa where the main rival character happens to be the protagonist's school bully. Like, Seokchan feels less like the bullies in Rooftop Swordmaster and more like a Vegeta-type character except not a total jobber.

Although I disagree with you that pure evil characters who love nothing then misery for others can´t be great antagonists, I still found this review quite interesting.
