JAN!!! Where have you been? I was almost ready to put your face on a milk carton! I thought you would never come back! Anyway, while you were away I went back and watched some of your old videos. Your abilities as a cameraman and narrator have really improved to the point that I think you are one of the best on RUclips. Also, your parents have a lot to be proud of; you are a outstanding young man. Thank you for sharing your story with us. WE are blessed!
You guys seem very professional. I like that, especially since you’re producing food. I also like how you treat your animals. Top 10 you tube video in my eyes.
Back a few years ago the drilling and service rigs made room for a farm kid from Saskatchewan on their crews, and most of them were real good hard working and mechanical inclined. Many became wellsite consultants or moved into engineering.
Thankyou for talking about the cows that are outside and being able to see them at minus 40 c I can’t imagine being out for any length of time. Happy to see the cows are doing well
Jan you are doing well with the temperature you dealing with when you are making videos. This video showed us a lot of how you are thrying to stop the water drinkers freezing up in your milking barn. Your stock out side are looking well and have a good shine to there skins.
After the feed wagon drove into the barn and you were saying just how COLD it was while you stood in the doorway with the door wide open. All that I kept thinking was CLOSE THAT DOOR YOU'RE LETTING ALL THE HEAT OUT AND THAT COLD AIR INSIDE, WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!! That's the kind of cold that as soon as you step outside and take in that first breath you can feel the hair in your nose freeze right away. The good ideal of sitting in the truck to stay warm though! Brilliant.
Excellent video Jan! You have Alaska weather! Be careful of your extremities when it is so cold - you don't have that cow fur to protect your face and ears! Stay safe! What Oxford Montello said!
All your videos are 👍. I had to use a woodfire tank heater. It was hollow with A door on one side and a chimney on the other end. I would start a fire in it and it would keep the water tank warm. Sometimes it would make the water almost hot, the cows loved it. I think it warmed them up like us drinking coffee.
I lived in Saskatoon for a couple of years and believe 40 below is really cold on either scale in January if it’s sunny it helps but there is only about 6 or 7 hours of daylight that really got to me. Good video. Stay warm and keep all the heaters turned on
I might suggest you run a 1” ratchet strapping around the fan frame to secure the tarp in place. Depending on the replacement cost & life expectancy Braithwaite Upholstery in Saskatoon could certainly make more durable covers. Most likely to cost more but their quality of material & workmanship is unbeatable. Lead time would certainly be required as they are quite busy
That 1” ratchet strap around the fan frame sounded like a great idea, hope he did it. Upgrading to a better quality cover would be good idea for the winter of 2021 - 2022. These fan covers were a good idea for keeping the herd comfortable.
This is the first day I have ever seen your videos I worked on a dairy farm over 20 years ago with stenchon milking system. You have very good videos showing and explaining things and I also know what cold weather is living 3 hours north of Saskatoon.
Great slo-mo camera footage near the end of your video Jan of you unlocking the gate with the ice flying off the chain and when the straw gets thrown into the beds. Keep warm my friend, -22c here in Ontario this morning, I guess that's warm by Sask standards. =) - Dave
I used to live in Prince Albert and my hubby worked in Saskatoon last winter. I remember how cold it got, even worse when you have all farms around you nothing to block the wind. Great videos.
Yhon. Thank You very much for the video. Yes it get's very cold were you live. You appear to handl the cold very well also. Please Take Care of your self Plus Be Very Care Full around all Farm Equipment.
nice fan bonnets. We use a piece of thick poly and tie it with a rope. Silage cover plastic could work for you. We have 30 fans, and close off most of them, leave some free for warm days. I wish to find a Canadian source too, USA dollars are too high for purchasing now,
Cattle do well in cold weather as long as you keep the water thawed and warm feed in the bunk. A cow's stomach full of warm feed is like a furnace for them to stay warm.
I completely understand that you are busy with the cold weather and everything extra it's bringing, like all the challenges like the door, water bowls and all other things, it is extra work nobody is waiting on but on the other hand, it keeps you busy and a little bit warmer.. I missed your video's too but knew about the weather you had and guessed that filming is momentarily one of the last things you want to do.. batteries dying, less time for it overall and maybe just a little bit of a fatigue to film or rather less motivated to film with all the fog inside and people whining about the cold and the animals.. The strong and healthy will have absolutely no problems, as long as they eat everything is okay! Jan, look at it this way, before you know it the weather is changing again and just take a mini break in filming, just say that in your next video and take some time off and reload in this time of the year and do something else like snowboarding behind a car (I do when we have snow 😉😁 ) Or whatever else you can think of and have some fun with your friends! Hang in there! 👊😎😄
Jan. Good to see another video today! It seemed like a month since your last one, though its just been about a week. I was afraid this crazy social media struggle down here in the states was somehow affecting you. (Same for 10th Gen Eric). I totally understand about trying to film in such frigid temps. Thanks as always!!!
Hopefully the weather will start warming up soon. Its been pretty cold in Manitoba too this last week. Amazing how cows can adjust to the weather outside.
Wow, your videos are amazing and very informative. I am a country boy but not a farmer, so have learned a lot from you and the cost of food. Your setup there would total in the millions, so you guys and gals must like it or why would stay? Keep up the good work. You said -40 I take that is Celsius. Here in near northern Ontario, parry sound area, the coldest I’ve seen is -25, can’t imagine - 40. Keep up the good work!
I was wondering why we hadn't heard from you...then I checked the weather in Saskatoon and I said oops Jan has got more important things to do than making videos with this super cold weather. You have it a lot rougher than we do in Eastern Ontario...All the best to you and your family for 2021!
Now that you have those covers and have the dimensions, you can probably have them manufactured in a heavier material locally for next year. Good luck. Oh my. That fog! You can't even see!
I don't know how you do it, but keep up the good work. Keeps you in shape for sure, dealing with the cold too. I was in Timmons ON for a week and it was -50 every day; I don't think I will go back...
The covers will make dead air inside the fan and no cold will blow in. I bet they make a huge difference. Get them off in the spring because the sun is the hardest thing on them. What a great idea and the temperature improvement will stop your pipes from freezing too. You have some pretty good wind breaks outside around the pens and that will help the the animals keep their warmth. All farm animals should be so lucky as to have you looking after them. Good video. Peace.
You could have kept that cold weather! It’s made it’s way over here to Ontario. -30 with the windchill tonight. It’s by far our coldest day this winter. It’s interesting to see how you’ll talk about the weather, and then by the time you’ve uploaded the video that same weather has made it to Ontario. I always thought most weather came up from the south but now I’m not so sure.
Thx again for another episode! With that creepy intro music(which I like) the cows in the fog fit right in... I suggested condoms for the fans months ago before the flurries flew. I also suggested repurposing bunk cover plastic to save money. If you also weatherstrip the panels it will help even more. Can I pretend you read my suggestion and followed my recommendation??? LOL :-)
