I sold a whole case of about 2000 cards with cards from Arabian nights, legends, dark, etc. For like $40, and they were in bad shape. We had magic parties with drinking, smoking, whatnot all the time. It's cardboard and these people don't understand that the cleanliness of cards is important. Or they do and just wanna grab the money. I took out all the alphas and betas and sold them for a lot of money though... At that rarity I'm getting my money.

I had the opposite kind of exchange. I ordered an Akroma Angel of Wraith and the seller sent me an Akroma Angel of Fury. Since it was a gift for my father but he liked that card so he wanted to keep it. I messaged the seller and told them with pic to warn them of the mistake but said since my dad was happy with it card I told the seller I was still leaving a 5 star in each category and general positive message. I message them saying also I understand mistakes happen. They were so apologetic and insisted on sending me a free correct item. Thanked them and added them to favor sellers became I didn’t expect that.

Based on the sellers messages, I feel like the buyer was more than likely being honest here. However I will say I have personally witnessed multiple different scams through eBay and wouldn’t put it past someone to use the “smells like smoke” excuse to try to get free items. eBay almost ALWAYS sides with the buyer, and sometimes even refunds both parties in order to settle disputes. My personal favorite was a sale we made several years ago. Buyer received the item but complained it was made from a different material than expected (all material composition and measurements were in description of original listing). Buyer requested refund and proceeded to send back a nasty, used bathroom mat instead of the original item. EBay eventually just refunded both parties in the end and the buyer got a ~$45 item for free.
Best advice here is to ALWAYS check the sellers negative feedback (if any) before purchasing.

thats why when ever i buy something from ebay i check at their sellers rate if the positive seller rate is 99.9-100% i will buy, Anything else i will pass since i got scammed on a model kit from a 98% positiv rate seller, he claimed it was from the official brand but when i got it , it was from a 3rd party. so yeah ebay seller rate % is something to check on and sometimes check the negative and neutral since it might also affect your purchase

Yea I got scammed on ebay selling a vintage molded beer sign it was 30+ years old, pretty big and fragile as hell so it cost a lot to properly package and ship it across the country. I had great high resolution photos of the item from both sides. It's sold at auction for around $150 but shipping it cost another $40. Im guessing that the buyer had serious buyers remorse or something so they claimed to ebay that the item wasn't genuine, because according to them: "it should have some sort of genuine sticker on it". Ive sold a ton of stuff like it and ive never seen such a sticker which would be so easy to fake which is besides the point. But furthermore It came out of a storage room of a friend's who collected tons of beer memorabilia so I know it's legit. Worse is I had to pay another $40 to get them to ship it back and it came back all busted to shit in multiple pieces and basicly worthless. So I ended up loosing $80 in the deal and the item as ebay pretty much takes the buyers side in matters like this (reguarding "Fakes") and I was just SOL. Worst ebay encounter I've ever had out of +10,000 sales though.

Ebay has a great policy protecting buyers. I got scammed buying a card that was never shipped out to me and Ebay just covered the refund for me. Although it really scares me to think how cigarette smoke can get to cards like that. I bet a lot of sellers are not even aware about how smoking can destroy the quality of cards, even in sealed packs

    • @ChillyJack
      @ChillyJack 2 года назад +2

My one big issue with ebay is that they let sellers mark items as shipped immediately even when they literally can't have been shipped. Pre-ordered some cards from Guilds of Ravnica back during spoiler season for that and the seller marked them as shipped a month before the set came out, but set the expected delivery date to a month and a half after it came out. Ebay wouldn't let me cancel the order because it was "shipped" and they wouldn't let me open a ticket because the estimated delivery date hadn't past yet. He ended up never sending the cards to anyone who preordered them, dozens of complaints on his page about it. I eventually got a refund, but not until the cards I'd ordered shot up to 10x the price I ordered them for. I stopped using ebay entirely after that.

    • @Arc_Viper

@@ChillyJack yeah, that is similar to my situation. I found out that I just need to check how old the seller account is. Managed an LCS for many years.
On time we sent a sale for about $2000 in cards to a South American country. Week or so later buyer tells eBay he never received the cards. We were unable to get tracking to that country so we had no way to dispute. EBay refunds the buyer. 3-4 days later he messages us, through eBay's message system mind you, to say the cards had just showed up & they were awesome. We ask him to pay us back then & he says "Why? I have the cards & the money now."
We bring this to the attention of eBay (remember this message had gone through their messaging system) & they told us they couldn't do anything about it.
That was the end of shipping internationally for our store chain.
Funny enough, we had taken the money out of our PayPal account already so we could ring the sale through our register so when eBay took the money, our PayPal account went $2000 negative. We just abandoned the account & never paid the money.

Not MTG but so many similar experiences buying vinyl records online. I bought a cover in "Near Mint" condition and it had a tear on the back, effectively a piece of the back is missing and unreadable. Obviously not NM. Another classic is records graded "Near Mint" or "Excellent" (very close to NM) but has scratches that affects that sound on multiple rotations. This happens all the time. I'll buy a record as Near Mint and when I sell it I have to downgrade it not one, not two, but three steps in order to get a fair rating and this slashes the value in half.

Speaking as someone who doesn't smoke, the smell of smoke can be a massive deal breaker in a lot of circumstances, especially if the person selling the cards smokes heavily. The smell of a light smoker's household and that of a heavy smoker is a lot, since that of a light smoker typically only clings to themselves while that of a heavy smoker permeates from everything they own. I had a hard time even being near my aunt because she smoked so heavily, the smell was pretty much permanent on her person.
Also, if you're going to smoke, at least do so outside or away from things you want to sell. Because, for a non smoker, the scent of heavy smoke can be extremely unpleasant, even stomach turning.

had the issue with a low cost vintage game I picked up off ebay as a gift for a family member. It was meant to be a sealed copy but reeked like nothing else of tobacco smoke and the seller was offended when I returned it. Its not difficult to clearly list your items as being/not being from a smoke free home and it will protect you from returns due to smoke damage and yes the smell is damage to the item.

i have my brothers cards now, he put his house on fire and well didn't end well , so most of his cards and decks smell like smoke and i do agree it stinks but i managed to get rid of the smell by putting the cards in a space with a lot of circulating air, with candle near them and sometimes just doing a small Febreze pass on them, did that for 1-2 weeks and now that don't smell as bad

    I used to smoke.
Stil have all my cards from the years of smoking, the years of my parents smoking (I started magic in 3rd grade, so my stuff from the 90s was in a home with 2 smokers, plus a wood stove for almost 2 decades) and those cards dont smell like smoke.

He keeps saying it couldn’t smell because it’s double shrink wrapped, yet he also knows the guy isn’t making this up and clearly smells the smoke. I think this is empirical evidence against his claim that he is boldly ignoring lol

Cat piss is by far the worst. Most smells will dissipate over time and exposure to air, but I swear cat piss has a 50 year half life.

Cigarettes are the number one flag you can wave saying "I'm a fucking moron!"
It's such a stupid habit, and you have to TRY to pick it up. You have to make yourself power through the initial discomfort of forcing something into your lungs that shouldn't be there, until you become accustomed to it.
