I'm Sarah Siedentopf. I'm an estate planning attorney in Atlanta, Georgia. If you're single, you may not have thought about estate planning being all that important because you know, are you worried about who gets your stuff? And probably you are, but it feels more removed. However, incapacity planning is a huge part of estate planning. Powers of attorney, advanced directives for healthcare. And I would argue that those things are even more important if you don't have someone who's got joint account ownership and some other wiggle room that comes around spouses and, you know, things they shouldn't necessarily be able to do, but often can get a little more information than someone who is only a friend or who is your parent. And if you're single and have children, setting up guardianship for those children is extremely important because there's, you know, only one point of failure before we move to guardianship, pets as well, if there's not a second person who is ready and willing to take care of the pets, has sort of a joint ownership situation, we need to designate who it is that we want in charge, who is gonna take care of that issue and making sure that these people know that they're in charge. Because again, if there's a spouse in the picture, there's sort of a known quantity that they are going to be in charge of something or, you know, should hopefully at least know where the paperwork is to start the ball rolling for different things. And as a single person, you need to make sure that whoever you've chosen is well aware of that responsibility and knows where to find these things. Another huge issue that comes into play is when you say, I just don't have anyone in my life who I want to put in charge of my money if I can't make decisions for myself. I don't have anyone who is likely to be, you know, available and willing to make medical decisions. But there are professionals and it is a growing industry of people who will handle power of attorney, who will be a trustee, who will be executor, who will make medical decisions for people who do not have those options. So don't put off your estate planning just because, you know, feel like you don't have anybody to put in place that would make an emergency that much worse. So if you are single and would like to talk about estate planning and you know why that is important for you or what that should look like for you, please give me a call, and also please like and subscribe.
