  • With the 2nd largest trolleybus network in the country the famous trolleybuses of Bournemouth were the beating heart of the city until 1969
    This fantastic footage captures them in action in the city with reports of the time from the archives of the Bournemouth Daily Echo.

    I used to live near the depot in Pokesdown. Athelstan Road is round the corner from where I live now.

    Yes those were the Good old Days unlike now 2021. Those buses could shoot up Richmond Hill but unfortunately it was the hills that killed off the Electric Trolley Buses as the huge motors were used for breaking down hill and far too many burnt out, hence a key reason they were replaced.

      Yes, it was "no standing passengers" when going up Richmond Hill.

    Such a shame the Bournemouth trolleybuses were replaced. They were silent, free of stinking fumes and fast accelerating.

    Such a 'green' system and I feel lucky to have travelled on them in the early 60s. Ironically Wellington in NZ recently shut down their trolleybus system with their yellow single deckers. Stupid move for a green country.
