Everybody needs at least one guitar that is completely different from anything else. This could be a baritone guitar, a Nashville tuned guitar, a resonator guitar, a 7- or 8-string guitar, a guitar with P-90's, anything. It's a must!

Great list. I’ve got it covered. I thought you were gonna say Jazzmaster. I had one for the past 5 years. Every session it stood there in the rack. Never used it. So I got rid of it a few weeks ago. I don’t recall you saying a P-90 guitar. I think it’s a must have. I use my Gibson Les Paul Special DC all the time. Probably more than my Les Paul.

Not a lot to argue with here except I'd need a P90 guitar of some type (maybe Rhett Schull will spot me his NOVO?) and a resonator...A '30s National, metal-bodied, 12-fret like Chris Whitley played, or Tyler Bryant currently plays, would work just fine...
And how about a Gibson EDS 1275?...You get the LP and the electric 12-string in one, freeing up an extra spot on the list!...And since we're talking studio guitars, you don't have to lug it to gigs or break your back playing it standing up!
P.S...I'll let the bass player bring the bass...

I have an HSS Strat, SG, small archtop acoustic guitar, P-Bass, a Tele with 2 hot rails and a mandolin. I'm planning on adding an SSS Strat, a normal Tele, a small parlor acoustic and some kind of a jazz box into my collection for it to be totally completed

  • @jerrysparks8781

I think you would be served better by omitting one of the acoustics and adding an electric with active pick ups. If you like to play heavy music or record it, EMGs or Fishman Fluences are a must. I personally would probably go with an ESP Eclipse but this might be the opportunity to add the Floyd Rose for all the EVH and Dimebag craziness. So...maybe a nice 24 fret superstrat would do the trick.

I live near Salem and find the history around the witch trials truly fascinating. Giles Corey (the man who was crushed between two planks of wood) said "more weight" whenever they would try to get him to speak. True badass. Too bad it happened though, many of the people who accused the "witches" came out to say they made it all up.

Good call on the nylon. They have a distinctive feel and voice that you can't get with a steel string. Taylor has a nylon string in the 200 series (214ce -N) that is pretty amazing for the price ($1000) that's a good starting point. Not really voiced for traditional "classical" music or flamenco... but great for everything else. It's on my lust list.

I record a lot and there’s no way I can keep the list at 10. A guitar with a P-90 a must, Rickenbacker 6 string solid body I use a ton. I have a Tele Cabronita which sounds great. You have to have a Taylor which sits in the Mids better than a 000 Martin. I recommend the 214 DLX which has great tone in the studio and not a price killer at $1300. I have two 6 string Ricks but for a 12 string electric option is the Schecter Stargazer and is a great option. If you don’t want to pony up for that a Dano 12 string with solid EQ does the job. Another needed guitar is a Tele Custom it just has a completely different sound at the neck pickup. I also use Fender Roland VG guitars because they can do almost everything from real time alternate tuning to sitar. So like Baxter I have a problem. If you move onto pedals and amps, then it’s a bigger problem. Good show guys!

I'd probably be ok with just one steel-string acoustic. Whether it's a Martin D-18, D-28, Furch, Guild D-20 or even Yamaha Red Label, all could do the job for me. You can do a lot with mic and mic-placement to get a dreadnought sounding good at fingerpicking. But I'd want a P-90 guitar in there, tough call between SG with P-90, or a Casino, but I think if pushed I'd go SG. I'd drop the 12-string too because I'd need a Jazzmaster. Or better yet, my Baum Wingman, which plays and sounds better than Jazzmasters to my taste, and the Bigsby is so solid. On Gretsch, many would go 6120, but I think I'd go with a Jet. It's true than 10 guitars is kind of tough, because I would like a 000, a Jazz Bass too (honorable mention). So 12 guitars might be my lower limit for well kitted out guitar studio, if you're including acoustics and basses.

Had a pal doing sessions in the 90’s on bass. He had these expensive Ken Smith, Pedulla, DeCava basses and the engineer would alway ask ‘ do you just have a P bass?’ He ended up having to grab one. I have a 74 P bass and neck profile slim jazz bass profile so perfect. Big difference in most baseball neck P basses from 70’s I’ve tried!! Enjoyed video!

I’m thinking a Ernie Ball (BFR) JPXI, a PRS “lunar ice” Silver Sky…hint.. hint…Lol, a Fender Road Worn Deluxe Tele, a Godin Multiac Nylon with midi capability, a Fender VRI Custom Shop Tele, a Normandy es style hollowbody, a Rainsong acoustic, a Taylor acoustic, a Gibson es 335, a Gibson SG w/P-90’s, and another PRS Silver Sky as a back-up….and I’m more than willing to substitute one or two of the Fenders or Gibsons for one or two XOTIC brand strat’s and tele’s.

I'd go for a resonator over the P bass. You need a bass as well as the ten, but it doesn't count. 😁

I love this and I’m really with you guys pretty much but a couple mentions: what about a big jazz box with a gold foil neck p/u there is nothing better for clean solo tones? Also I have a Gibson B45 12 string from the ‘60’s that has that Lennon/ Gordon Lightfoot mojo tone (not a Guild) plus a Rickenbacker 12. Because you need both! I would love an ES325 and a vintage p90 Casino, but time will tell. ❤

Gibson SG, Les Paul Special with P 90s, 1970s Yamaha SG 2000, Strat, Tele. Jazz Bass would be my choice, but I suppose everyone needs a Precision too. 😁

for me, the list goes Strat (SSH), LP (with SDs), semihollow, 7 string, acoustic, and maybe something with P90s probably an SG, good point about the nylon

Baxter quote of the video, “Salem Witch Trial Yourself!” How do I do that? You guys are 98% dead on the $$. The only egregious mistake is not including the Gibson J-45. How would you copy Keef, Bowie, and Lennon’s Acoustic tones? Also we all know that the D-35 sounds way better than D-28.

Omg no! Get rid of the nylon and the 12 string! How often are you really going to track with these? When you need one borrow it.
Replace the Nylon with a large body acoustic, probably a super jumbo. Replace the 12 string with a P90 guitar, I don’t care which.
I would probably argue the offset / 335 decision. I can get the 335 tone on a LP. You need that offset tone. Maybe your offset has P90’s? Kill two birds and add the 335 back in.
But kill the nylon and 12 string.

    LP
    ES-3XX
    D-28
    000-18
    a nylon string

I would swap out the Martin 000-D18 for a Gibson LG-2. It’s a different flavor of the small body acoustics and is a completely different animal than the Martin D28.

Looks like many commenters agree, this list could easily jump to 12-15 guitars. I'd add a short bass like a Mustang, a P90 LP or Special type, and a modern rock/shredder with trem. Then another Fender bass. Then another Tele...

12-string? Martin? nah... a Taylor? nah... not them either; despite having the Taylor
surname myself, it is the Aussie acoustics which rule undisputed! Maton CW80 dreadnaughts are the best 12 strings guitars on the planet, tone to die for.

I laughed my ball off durning the trail. The fishman was hilarious.
I did not know he played bass. Im a Gibson blues lawyer. Playing for over 4 decades (God help me I'm old) i picked up a bass once in my lifetime. It felt so strange i never tried one again. But i know in the studio, every bass player that was any good was using a Fender P-bass.
    They must be the best.

2015 50th anniversary D12-35. Best I've heard, easiest to play, stays in tune and it's a 12 fret. You may be surprised. You know what they say about opinions though......

Hey guys, I'm not rich, just an ordinary, average run - o- the- mill musician. I have a collection of 13 guitars and one bass, and I just bought a Gibson and I'm thinking of buying another Gibson only ten days after I bought the previous one, but I do not have debt, I do not use credit of any kind, it's just some money I have set aside and I'm thinking of buying a Gibson Les Paul Standard just about a week after I bought a Gibson Les Paul Classic ...and my Guilt - O - Meter is running high!

I have a Taylor 254CE DLX 12 string that I really love. For a low priced Taylor, it really has a great sound. Of course, the 5 series Taylors are phenomenal, but I’d recommend this as an alternative at a lower price point. Great list!

Actually, the old man said "More Weight!" Thus simultaneously inventing both the Punk AND the Metal attitudes. True Story. Well... the "More Weight!" part is true. But if you think on it a bit you'll surely see I have a point.

I would add a PRS for some heavy tunes, more modern sound... The problem would be: which one to remove from the list? Hummmm Blasphemy ! But remove the 12-string or the second Martin... Hard choices but...

Ffs...everybody needs at 'least' 10 guitars now. You guys are too funny!
Does everybody playing need all of those sounds? Perhaps some session muso may need to cover more bases than most players in a band situation or certainly the home player.
I guess this vid was truly coming from a store owner. Hey, why stop at just 10.
I wonder on your next vid: "How many pedals does a guitar player need?" If you'd get away with anything less than 20. 💷 😂

Speaking of nylon guitars, if you have small hands, try the Ibanez GA35TCE. It has a smaller neck feel than the usual nylon guitar.
