One more reason, why the liver shifts from gluconeogenesis to ketone body production is because the Krebs cycle is slowed down, as the intermediates of Krebs cycle are the substrates of gluconeogenesis, they get used up and citric acid cycle slows down considerably.
So remaining acetyl coA with nowhere to go turn to ketone body synthesis.

Awesome video! Takes me back to my school days in the '90s. I wish they knew/taught then what we've learned since.

You should maybe mention that High levels of ketones lead to a ketoacidosis. Thanks for the video.

Hoomes thats false. Body regulates its ketone level in blood by shifting from ketones to free fattyacids. That happens after 2 weeks on keto diet or starvation. Ketones are then only used by brain. High ketone levels in the blood (more than 0.2 mmol/dl) are a sign of bodies metabolism shifting from glucose to free fatty acids. Ketoacidosis happens only in diabetic type 1 and alcoholic who dont eat just drink heavy. And btw body has few mechanisms to regulate ketone levels, one of them is insulin/glucagon ratio and that happens because high ketone levels trigger insulin release and that stops their production in liver.

Jovan Cvetojevic That's what he said. Don't pomp yourself. Ketoacidosis does come from ketone bodies, irrespective of the etiology, so it is not false.
