    Hey! Matti's wife here. I recently told Matti that I secretly watch all his youtube videos, not just to support him but to actually learn something about film making for myself. Some people would be surprised to know that around the time we met, I was actually into filmmaking. I bought a camera, and Matti taught me how to shoot and edit. 2 weeks after I posted my first "restaurant" video, I surprisingly landed a pretty sweet job for a big company. Unfortunately, that money came too quick in my "video career" and my "gap" doubled in size. I quit the whole filmmaking soon after. It's been 5 years since and I've tried to get back into it but my unrealistic expectations of where I want my skills to be and what I want my work to look like have been a huge hindrance. I have so much footage on my computer that has accumulated over the years and have not been edited. This morning I watched this video and I find myself inspired and ready to try again. This simple piece of advice can be applied to any skill. If you read this long post, I'm curious to know if you too had a similar experience. Is there a dream of yours that you quit too soon because you felt your skills were lacking? Do you think its time to start that up again? Life is so short and I can't keep wasting precious time telling myself I wish I could do this and that when I have the internet to teach me everything I need to know to actually make that a reality. So here's to learning about editing, stop motion, how to make a proper recipe video and everything in between! What better time than now to start living life and filling that time with things I actually want to do!

    so true, you can learn everything by yourself. Problem with most people sadly is that they don't start to create just because they think it's not good enough or they will get negative feedback on it..just do it.

    Very inspiring. Another thing that a lot of people fail is not to believe that they can make good videos with cheap equipment. They are always waiting to buy a more expensive camera as if that were the solution. It help of course, but it's not the most important thing in the world. As you said, you just have to learn, make and repeat.
    #learnmakerepeat

    • @mattih
      @mattih  7 лет назад +11

      Totally! Good gear helps but if you havent been learning and making then its pretty useless and can actually distract a lot. They think they are getting better cause they have better gear which isnt true at all.

    • @joshuaherron2190
      @joshuaherron2190 7 лет назад +4

      Jorge Miranda id like to correct your statement from "cheap equipment" to "cheap cameras." Using a 300 dollar dslr has taught me that i dont need an expensive camera, but my computer has taught me that im not gonna get anywhere fast when it takes me a straight day to colour grade a minute of video due to slow render times.

    I’m going to film school because I literally cannot make any friends in the industry. The problem isn’t that I’m not amiable or sociable. I just keep meeting the wrong people. People that aren’t serious about filmmaking, they just make videos for fun or for the small chance they’ll become famous. It’s hard to be surrounded by hobbyists when you want a career

      Films are just moving images, and as a photographer you probably already know how to make a good image - composition, lighting, all this colour stuff and so on. Actually, in film schools (at least in Russia) future cameramans and DPs in the first year of study do not shoot video, and they don't touch video cameras at all - they shoot photos, and learn about all this photography things. Next, they shoot a series of photos connected with a story they a trying to tell. After that they shoot static shots on video camera without camera movement and without cuts, despite there is must be something happening in the shot. They are learn tell a story with just one shot. Then there is a static shots and cuts, and a story, and so on, and so on. This is how they progress, step by step. But nevertheless photography is a key. And you already have this key to make a good films! Just start making a moving photography, lol. Note, that Director of photography has a 'photography' in the title :).
      Hope this helps somehow. :)

This is just what I needed to hear, to focus on learning and making... I find it frustrating when I look back at footage that I thought would be good but isn't at the standard I want. Creative Generalist! Professionally it was graphic design, then 3D animation/illustration, ad agency art director here in Toronto for a few years, and now motion graphics artist. Both videography and photography have always been on the side (with my start being skateboard and BMX films in high school, when I started some formal education in photography). Industrial design, and even interior design have also been paid areas I've been involved with. I've only been asked once what school I went to (since graduating from design school 92'). Clients or employers have for the most part only been interested in previous work I can show them, and what results I can deliver.

    As someone who spent 4 years at a prestigious art institute and 6+ years in the NYC photo industry, I NEVER recommend art school. It's truly one of the worst investments. The only difference between a professional and an amateur is Experience.
    The best thing anyone can do regarding schooling is to get some kind of business degree and learn excellent business skills, (because as a creative you ARE a small business), then get an internship with serious industry professionals. A school will never teach you what an internship will.
    Keep up the good work man!

      +thePhotopiper I've never been to film school. But I've heard the same thing a lot. Couldn't agree with your advice more! Learning from a true professional and making along side then would be the absolute best!!! 🙏

    What if I am learning a ton from the internet, but also attending school for digital media production at the same time? This video was SO inspiring.

    Always good stuff man, just so awesome, I started off with a cellphone and man I learnt so much during that time. When I got my first camera I had to learn what the dials meant and camera terminology, then I realized how much more there is to learn. I could totally relate to everything you say bro.

      +Tilt Hat Productions so good! Yea that's exactly how it goes. You learn it but by bit and by making you internalize it and learn even more

      TravelFeels yes indeed, and I think the greatest skill we all learn by this process is the power of manipulation, as we basically learn by trial and error, with not much guidance like film school does. So we understand more deeply the importance of always learning and making.

    A day ago, I was just looking at my 60fps footage and thinking "Damn, I wish I could make it slow and buttery without spending a couple of paychecks on a camera".
    The rest of the video is awesome too, but that plugin made my day :)
    Matt, you rock as always!

    Great video, but I think it's easy to do great videos with a drone (which makes everything a little more cinematic) and a wonderful location, I find it hard to find filmmakers who do amazing stuff portraying the daily and tiny things of life

    Why is it that english speaking Fins and Norwegians always have perfect American accents. I work with Chinese and Mexican nationals that have been living here in the US for decades and they still sound fresh off the boat. Do they teach you American accents in public school over there??

    I would say if you live in a country where film school is free, then go for it and use their facilities and learn from their people, while also doing your own projects on the side.
    Although I cannot think of a bigger waste of money than my film degree!
