Bobby Helms was my mother's uncle, my grandma was his big sister. My grandma adored him. I saw him at Christmas time each year as a kid. He was quiet and kind. I was pleased to see you reacted to this. When I am with my kids and we hear it at a store, in the car, wherever...we shout "Uncle Bobby!" Others don't know why and we crack up over the odd looks we get. Silly, but that's how we honor and remember him.

Best Christmas song ever is 'I Believe In Father Christmas' by Greg Lake. It's message is anti-commercialisation and talks of the loss of childhood innocence, with a dash of anti-religion protest. The lyricist described it once as "a picture-postcard Christmas, with morbid edges." Musically it's one of the most joyful Christmas tunes ever and lifts the soul with every listen.

I remember when this song was first released. it was a big hit and has since become a Christmas season standard .
BTW, keep in mind that this was in the early days of rock when some so-called "County & Western" singers recorded country influenced rock songs like this one.. They were called "cross over" recordings as they bridged the gap between country and rock.
BTW, this not really a Christmas song as Christmas is not even mentioned, just like the original Jingle bells, it is just a snowy winter song..

@Barb5001, I hope you realize a lot of "POP" and "Rock N Rollers" did crossover songs that were original hits by Country artists. Many artists from other musical genres do cover songs and they become hits in their own music fields. One thing that make a lot of vintage recordings sound so smooth is.......
They were recorded using totally analog tube driven amps etc.
Tubes do have their own kind of distortion but that kind of tube distortion is what makes tube driven music sound "warm" and smooth.
If you are familiar with "Gladys Knight And The Pips"...... all their warm sounding recordings are the result of them being recorded on an older tube driven console at their recording engineer's insistence ..... even when a transistor console was readily available for him to use

The Pogues singing The Fairtytale of New York is always played here in the UK at Christmas. It is a different song to the other traditional songs and carols.

He was born in Helmsburg, Indiana. Later moved a little north to Martinsville, Ind (where I lived at one time). My Uncle & him walked the hospital floor together, waiting for their daughters to be born. He had two No.1 country music hits! "My Special Angle" is amazing!

Bobby Helms was a Country singer that had a few songs that had crossover appeal to Rock and Pop listeners during the 1950s. Two other hit songs that Bobby Helms had were "My Special Angel" and "Fraulein" (which is German for "young woman")

Bobby Helms was from Indiana. Don't know if maybe he moved farther south at an early age. There was a lot of controversy about this song too. Two guys (a publicist and a ad guy) wrote a song called Jingle Bell Bop and sent it to Bobby. He and his session guitarist both thought it was awful. So they rewrote it. They changed the melody and the lyrics and added a bridge which the original didn't have. They thought the one sent to them was very amateurish, and wouldn't record it. They did however record their version. Unfortunately they never got credit (or royalties) for their final version. So this song that apparently Bobby Helms and Hank Garland wrote which is the one we all know and love is still credited to the other 2 guys as far as writing credits.

There's a 2016 youtube video which shows her 1953 performance of the song when she was ten years old and follows it with her singing it again when in her 70s. Rob and Amber should watch it since they are in Oklahoma and Gayla Peevey is from Oklahoma.

I spent over seven years in Eastern Europe and have always been amazed that the Christmas music in Eastern Europe is almost always the classic American Christmas music. I am guessing when the Communists ruled, they weren’t allowed to celebrate Christmas. So they never had their own Christmas music. I walked through the mall in Moscow and Bing Crosby is singing White Christmas and Bobby Helms is singing Jingle Bell Rock. I think one reason the older classic songs are more popular is that the holidays are often built on fond memories of the past, so older versions bring back these memories.
