- This week's episode of Talking Whiskey has two excellent whiskeys, Uncle Nearest 1856 VS Basil Hayben's Kentucky straight bourbon. Choosing between these two is almost imposable. Uncle Nearest 1856
Uncle Nearest 1856 has a caramel color with a beautiful deep golden hue. Baled hay and pumpkin seeds on the nose with subtle notes of ripe stone fruit and caramel corn. Bold and spicy upfront then mellows with sweet caramel and maple, like biting into an oatmeal raisin cookie. The finish is long and rich. It lingers pleasantly sweet on the palate with notes of vanilla after the spice dissipates.
APPEARANCE
Light caramel, straw/hay, beautiful deep golden hue
NOSE
Bale of hay, dried grass, stone fruit notes of ripe peach and apricot, caramel corn and sweet maple.
PALATE
Spicy caramel up front with the proof, hints of maple then mellows with dried fruit and floral notes. Sweetness and spice reminiscent of freshly baked oatmeal raisin cookies.
FINISH
Long and rich finish, lingers pleasantly sweet on the palate, notes of vanilla.
Basil Hayden
Late in the 18th century, Master Distiller Basil Hayden Sr. left his Maryland home for the greener pastures of Kentucky, bringing his family and reputation with him.
Not yet privy to the old guard's 'rules' of bourbon, legend has it that Basil set out to make a batch simply using the ingredients he had on hand, unaware of what the traditionalists might think of his mash. What resulted was a bourbon with a uniquely high-rye mashbill, combining the sweetness of corn with the spicy undertones of rye. The purists may have been displeased, but not the neighbors who tried it.
Over 200 years later, the Noe family pays tribute to Basil's masterful discovery with a high-rye, small batch bourbon that embodies the spirit of that very first recipe

If you're in Florida its BOGO at Publix liquors till Thursday. I grabbed a case. I was very impressed with Uncle Nearest. Its better than Basil Haydens bourbon.

Have you guys compared Johnny Walker, Woodford reserve, or Evan Williams yet? I haven't seen all your vids yet so I wasn't sure. I know walker is Scotch Whisky but hey any whisky is good for me. I prefer the walker black label. It taste great on the rocks but it is affordable

I meant Basil Hayden's (I'm on the 3rd Vodka Tonic), so I was interested in finding out how you thought they compared. Again, I just ran across you guys, but really enjoyed this video.
