    I love the way you compare art with a visual communication and I totaly agree with you. Once I had a professor at the universety who asks why I make this thousends of little tiny strokes to end up in this ugly hairy "line" monster. He explained to me that drawing is like talking and every line you make is a word you say. And if you start with this many little lines it´s like you stuttering. He said, if you want to say something loud and clear make one strong line and let it be like it is.

    Hearing Adam speak about telling jokes in french made me think of when my Dad says things like "Da Bomb." Cultural and social relevance is constantly shifting and evolving, it takes a young mind and soul to keep up with it. The spirit of an artist must therefore be just as youthful, if they are to keep up with the ever changing rules of society around them. Excellent piece Adam, I never played Ravenloft but I sure have played Neverwinter and Baldur's Gate and the like and loved seeing that as something you've allowed to influence yourself.

    Great talks and painting! Only one request, if I may. Could you please increase the sound volume of your video? Because it's rather low, and I always have to maximize the volume of my speakers and my pc/laptop.

    • @AdamDuffArt
      @AdamDuffArt  5 лет назад +7

      I noticed that too - particularly today. I noticed that my voice kicked in a bit low, especially in the beginning. Now being someone with a very sensitive ear for background noise, I tend to keep my volume at -10db (when it's recommended to keep the final render at -1), but I'm going to work towards filtering that out this week so we can squeeze as much volume out of the final piece as much as possible. Thanks for mentioning that btw - I needed that feedback.

      One more thing...if I may ask.
      What if, you and the other great guy Borodante, would create a sort of sporadic collaboration?

    Fabulous talk. I've just discovered your channel today and this is great food for thought. I have a lot of respect for the fundamentals, but I'm also feeling overwhelmed. Regardless, your comparison with language is spot-on because I have studied numerous languages and I know that feeling exactly, of when I feel confident with the language compared to when I don't. No one learns a language in a day, and the fundamentals are the same.
    Keep up the good work!

    Outstanding video, Adam! I feel I'm on that cusp of wanting to 'stretch out' and play around with some of the fundamentals I've been working on, while at the same time deep-diving into another set of fundamentals (such as composition) to really get a hang of how they're all interconnected together. Keep up the great work!

      I can tell by how you worded that as well that you're right on the cusp of that as well. My recommendation is to just "let it happen" and not to "force it if it doesn't come". it's like laughter - if you have to force it, everyone can tell it's inauthentic.

      Nowadays you can go either way - the experience is the same, drawing and painting. IF you can’t draw, then there’s no software or hardware that will fix that - the talent comes from the artist.

    Ok so this might be a stupid question but what things are in the fundamentals? I mean can someone give me a bullet-point list of the things I absolutely have to learn and in what order to learn them? I'm aiming to make art that looks like it could jump out of the picture but I have no idea what to learn and in what order. Most people I asked just skirt around the topic even in courses.

    • @abdeaubacktayes750
      @abdeaubacktayes750 5 лет назад +2

      Color/percepective/anatomy/value/composition i might miss two or three but this is what i consider fundamentals.
      Ps this isn't in order but basically percepective is the 1st one to understand or at least be confortable with and then it's up to you and what you wanna achieve.

    • @TheSatyrical
      @TheSatyrical 5 лет назад +4

      Fundamentals can mean different things to different people. But I think most people will agree that perspective and form/lighting are fundamental. It's basically about understanding how our eyes work and how physics works and how to make something realistic. They are what everything is built under(and why they're called the fundamentals) unless you are a completely abstract artist. After that, anatomy, color, composition, gesture are important in adding complexity and pushing your art. Then, story telling and personal voice would be the end goal. Whenever you move to the next step, you will never stop learning the previous aspects of art. Therefore, you shouldn't think that it's necessary to be great at fundamentals before you move on. I would actually recommend exploring art so you know what you like and understand how to use the fundamentals for your needs.

    How would you define the profession "Fantasy Illustrator"?

    • @AdamDuffArt
      @AdamDuffArt  5 лет назад +2

      I think that the author who published some of my work in imagine FX worded it beautifully - "someone who bridges the gap between fantasy and reality". Essentially, a fantasy artist is someone who creates fictional imagery that respects and follows the rules of reality well enough to become convincing to the audience - in a real-world sense. Take dragons for instance - an entirely fictional creature who's anatomy and intellect and design are so heavily inspired by different real things, like serpents, lizards, dinosaurs and birds that if one were to fly over your head one day, it wouldn't entirely surprise you.
