I believe the string technique you describe is a "snap pizz.," or "Bartok pizz.," as opposed to regular pizzicato. Anyway, I like what you had to say about making incremental adjustments when trying to learn this technique; it's something I hadn't heard suggested before.
Thanks for the video! I got the reed in the mouthpiece and the air going, but as soon as I try to form an embouchure I'm hosed because I use so much tongue on my reed, so all I get are squeaks. This is the only video I've seen that says hey, that's normal, start there and work your way back. Mind. Blown.
I'm four years late to the party, but how has your progress been? I'm in exactly the same spot where I can get the reed to slap but I only get spittly/subtone sounds because the tip of my tongue is always touching the reed. Does it get better naturally?
Sorry but I still don't understand how to make the slapping sound louder. I can make the reed pop but there's no volume. I'm unable to force any air out while popping the reed. Thanks
Derek Brown is the master of slap tongueing. Beatbox Sax is his bag of skills. Use a reed to practice suction....not a credit card. As you learn it, you'll use less and less tongue once the reed is on the mouth piece.
Finally someone that explains it quick, easy and gives exercises along with it.
Thanks so much!

Thanks for the comment, snap pizz is probably better!
the slap part in the name comes from the reed snaping back and hitting the mouth peice

Try this video, otherwise we could Skype and I could show you. Good luck!
Hey, I saw your video and right now I have the suction down but I dont get the puff of air, any comments?
The air is a quick burst, kind of like when spitting.
HAHA. I just got it! Thanks, I can at least practice something now! Thanks so much! Haha, I can't belive it was that simple.
Great! Glad you succeeded!
Great video, Preston.
Thanks!
How minutes a day do I practice this method? For 2 to 3 months? I think use to have this 30 years ago? This really frustrating
It's been 3 years, did you ever get it?
Thank you
I cannot get the fist part

Sounds so weird trying to practice the mouth movements with no mouthpiece
