- This aria is from the Leoncavallo opera Pagliacci and was recorded by Enrico Caruso on 17th March 1907.
I have tried to give the best possible sound to the music and, just for a live effect and to cover noise at the start and end, have added applause.
This is the first restoration that jumps out of the speakers like the ancient 78 jumps out of the victrola. I'm astounded. All that power recorded through a horn. Frightening to imagine it recorded with today's microphones. Thank you!
The pleasure is al mine, thank you for your kind message, I 'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video. Yes, if only Caruso ,McCormack and other great singers of that era had had the advantage of today's technology their amazing qualities would be properly recognized.
@@michaelmcgrailengland I also feel that about some of the great violinists captured on acoustic recordings. Fortunately voice and violin made it through that horn with enough clarity and force so we can appreciate them. Piano and of course ensembles couldn't. Thanks again for the work you did.
Wow.. The power, the brilliance.. Timeless.
Thanks for listening Glenn, I'm really pleased that you enjoyed it
@@michaelmcgrailengland.. U have done such a great job
@@glennmorris371 Thanks for your kind message Glenn, I really appreciate it.
@@glennmorris371 By the way Glenn, I uploaded this again recently. The audio is only a little better but I have colourized the photos and, mainly because I don't like them, I've followed it with the version with overdubbed Symphony Orchestra. If anyone has doubts about Enrico Caruso then tell them to listen to this disc.
Thanks for listening and for your comment Gordon.
Caruso was, and remains, Mr. Opera.
Thanks for listening,
@@michaelmcgrailengland A recording company should restore his top songs using A.I. and release an album with the title CARUSO MEETS A.I. The cover would feature an old photo of Caruso singing into an acoustic horn on the left half and then a colorful modern illustration showing the sound emanating in a loud and full fashion on the right side. The album would sell millions and would kickstart a whole new generation if Caruso fans.
@@mjmitz It's a good idea but todays CD companies are only interested in what makes them the most money. I sent some of my restorations to three of the big companies and I didn't even get a reply from any of them.
@@michaelmcgrailengland I think it would sell millions worldwide with proper marketing. Below is the best restoration I've heard this far from a RUclips Channel called Restoration Archive. They've done several Caruso restorations...

Thank you for listening Marian it's really nice to know that someone , like yourself, gets the same pleasure as myself from the music that I put on RUclips.
IL CAPOSCUOLA! CHE MERAVIGLIA!!?
Thanks for listening and for your comment Alessandro I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
@@michaelmcgrailengland Mi riempie l'anima ogni volta che ascolto Caruso. Senza di esso i suoi successori non avrebbero potuto tracciare una linea precisa. Egli fu l'inizio... Il principio IL TENORE.
I couldn't agree with you more Alessandro.
Thank goodness they were able to make recordings of these masterpieces for us to enjoy so many years later.
MELHOR TENOR DO MUNDO!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for listening and for your comment Eduardo. What a wonderful singer he was. It's 100 years since he died and many still regard him as the best ever.
Last year I uploaded a video to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death that you might like. It has one song from each year of his recorded career, 1902 to 1920 and about 300 coloured photos. If you do want to watch/listen to the video the link is ruclips.net/video/SYglMiD13D4/видео.html
I understand why most of the greats consider him the greatest. ✌️
Thanks for listening and for your comment. Yes,to my ears only Jussi Bjorling came close to him in opera.
@@michaelmcgrailengland I love Björling but I prefer the the heavier dramatic voices like del Monaco, Corelli and others. That being said I love to listen to the beautiful voices og Björling and Wunderlich. My two favorite lyric tenors.

SUBLIME!
Thanks for listening, I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
Es del disco llamado Caruso 2000, parte del repertorio remasterizado y en este caso agregaron también la versión original, cuya fecha 17 de marzo 1907
Thanks for listening and for you comment Juan but I must tell you that you are wrong. This is NOT from the CD Caruso 2000 which was one of those terrible attempts to give his recordings an up-to-date sound by adding a modern orchestra.
This is the original 1907 studio recording carefully and lovingly restored by myself using the restoration system devised by myself. I do give this information in the video title and description.
I've uploaded quite a few Caruso's that I have restored and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death on 2nd August I recently uploaded a video with one song\aria from each year that he recorded (1902 to 1920) and almost 300 photos.

@@michaelmcgrailengland sure??? Wrong, I have repertoire of Caruso, this is a recorded in live but, in the remastered change sorry
@@juanpablopenavolpe1142 Thanks for your message Juan. It's not actually a live recording, I add applause just to give a live effect and cover noise.
@@michaelmcgrailengland congratulations for your work, a I'm opera singer, I love Caruso's and Gigli, I have collection of your life, and yes 100 years of your death and 2022 150 years of your born, and I have prepared one show about him, in South America, I love Vesti la Giubba, Una Furtiva Lágrima, La Mattinata, O Sole mio, Torna a Surriento, Santa Lucia, Core n' grato and more. Tante grazie per suo lavoro e amore per questo.
Thank you so much for your kind words Juan. I'm trying to improve the sound of the old recordings of the great singers of the past like Caruso in the hope that it might help to perpetuate their memory. I'm now 79 years old but hope that I will be able to continue for some time.
Very best wishes for the future and your career as an opera singer from Yorkshire, England.
As a realtive neophyte to the quality of past tenors, I pose a simple question: How would Pavarotti be rated compared to Caruso?
Many years ago I was fortunate enough to be in the company of Anton Coppola at a dinner party. He firmly posited that Pavarotti had a more powerful and melodic voice and ranked him as the best tenor ever. He opined that the lustre of time and 'legend' in the opera world seems to take precedence when ranking the great ones and thought Luciano, in generations to come, would (and should) be ranked 'numero uno'
Thank you for listening and for your comment Sonny, I hope that you enjoyed the video.
I am no expert on the technical side of singing and I only know what pleases my ear but I have been listening to the great singers for more than 60 years which I think would make my opinion credible.
With the greatest respect to Mr Coppola, I think he was wrong and find it difficult to understand why he should hold such an opinion. Pavarotti was an excellent entertainer, a showman with a larger than life personality but as an operatic tenor the quality of his voice fell far short of for example Caruso, Bjorling and Wunderlich. If you include lieder, traditional song and popular song he was in my opinion inferior to ,for example, McCormack, Tauber, and Schmidt.
Also, of course, Pavarotti had the huge advantage of modern recording technology and large orchestras to compliment his singing which seriously impairs our ability to make a fair comparison as the audio quality of the old recordings, particularly the pre 1925 acoustics is so poor..
@@michaelmcgrailengland Thank you for your reply and while I cant comment on Bjorling and Wunderlich, I too have been listening to opera for 30+ years and I still think LP is at least 'on par' with Caruso. I think we actually lessen a performers true range and depth by inserting modern day acoustical enhancements into the conversation and using them as a gauge. . Those, in my opinion, cannot detract from the voice and range of a tenor. In OUR lifetimes we have lived and seen 'the greatest' performers. Sports, theatre etc. While it is floral and esoteric to rate/compare any 'old masters' and give them supremacy, in my opinion I am thrilled that LP is one of them. I saw him many times and am happy to embrace him as the primo voce. That said I guess it's like comparing Babe Ruth to Alex Rodriguez, or Picasso to Monet or Mario Batali and Bobby Flay. Opinion! And I truly value opinion. A dear friend runs an opera company in NYC and he agrees with you. Vociferously.. Lol..
@@sonnylapilotta1069 Well it's nice to know that someone agrees with me!!!!
@@sonnylapilotta1069 I forgot to mention that I've uploaded a couple of videos featuring, among others, Caruso and Pavarotti (O Holy Night and Questa O Quella) that you might like to listen to. The links to them are as follows

If I get it finished I shall be uploading Una Furtiva Lagrima this weekend with eight tenors including Caruso and Pavarotti.
On second thoughts, perhaps you shouldn't listen in case it knocks Luciano off his throne!!!!
@@michaelmcgrailengland I never thought that Pavarotti was a great tenor. When he sang at Covent Garden the prices doubled overnight and quite frankly I preferred to see Bergonzi, Domingo and Kraus who I thought were much better singers than Pavarotti
I thought I'd share with Caruso fans a recent synchronization of his voice with his his 1918 film "My Cousin". Would sound better with the restored sound. Looks like Caruso invented the Moonwalk decades before Michael Jackson. Lol
