    I totally agree with your thoughts on The Troop and I’m glad you mentioned the animal cruelty triggers as well! The parts with the cat literally made me cry and I was forced to skip that section because it was so upsetting. 😢🖤 but the book overall was okay I thought!

    • @mikalareads

      YES omg I swear I also had to skim parts of The Troop because I can't deal with really detailed on page animal cruelty like that, Im like NOPE dont need that in my mind! 😅 I agree though totally, like overall it had great positives to it!

    I have the same problem with classics! I tend to feel like I'm in over my head with the language.

      Yesss with Classics that I really struggle with the language sometimes!!!! I am always shocked when I find a classic I really vibe with the writing and I feel like it just makes me love the book even more if the writing works for me!
      HAHAH truly you are not alone with your thoughts on Death in Her Hands!!!! I have actually only ever seen ONE person who also enjoyed that book, so I think I am the unpopular opinion for sure!

    THE PICKLE SHIRT. BIG FAN.
    It gives me the ick when someone knocks or rings the doorbell. NO THANKS 🤣
    I have had my eye on My Murder for a while! I love when a book has commentary that really makes you think
    The Troop sounds so good!! I heard it was similar to Wilder Girls but better and I really enjoyed that one when I read it so IDK what I'm waiting for!
    9:25 🗣🗣🗣 YAAS omg I lived for the drama in this book. A romance made the list!!! I am LIVING
    The Honeys is on my 24 for 24 list!!! I can't wait to read it 🙏. My expectations are HIGH 😂
    12:39 HEARD 📝
    13:54 Same with my faves of 2023! Some of them were 4/4.5 stars but have a space in my brain for life 😂💯

      YES HAHAH!!! When I seen this sweater I HAD to get it!! 🥒💗🙌💯
      RIGHT like please no one ever ring my doorbell!!!!! It makes me feel so uncomfortable for a solid 30 minutes! 😅
      OMGGG YES thats such a good comparison The Troop does read a LOT like Wilder GIrls!!!! 😱💯 But grosser I think and the boys are just almost all super toxic (although they are kids and I didnt want them to die, but they def had some real issues), vs the girls in Wilder Girls I really think were easier to like!
      YES the drama in "Kiss her once for me"!!!!!!! I seriously loved this one, it had me SOBBING by the end!
      I HOPE you really enjoy the Honeys and also I think you will because it's actually a rec I would give if someone loves Bunny , I think the Honeys is a really good book to read! They have so many similar themes and vibes!!!!

    I'm adding so many of these onto my neverending tbr! Frankenstein was such a good one that I'll have to reread it. Hearing more about The Troop make me even more curious but I'm not sure how I'll respond to the animal cruelty because I do love animals! I love your recommendation videos. 😍

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  7 месяцев назад +1

      AWW I am so happy you were able to add some of these to your tbr, although I am also sorry to contribute to it because I also have a never ending TBR I want to read down hahah!!!!
      YESSS oh my goodness gracious Frankenstein truly blew me away so much I am thinking I may need to do a yearly fall re-read of it!
      OKAY so for The Troop I think if you are curious I would say give it a try reading it and also for those more detailed sections with on-page animal violence I think it is PERFECTLY valid to just skim those pages or skip past those parts, and you truly won't miss anything or be confused for the overall plot! Like nothing essential is in those parts I noticed, just more of that really detailed writing that is trying to give the reader the ick! IF you do read The Troop I will look forward to hearing your thoughts and review of it!!!

    0:14 - Can I just say that (unless it's DoorDash), this reaction to the doorbell is mine.
    Loving this idea, by the way. Some books don't have that same "umph" as the best of the best, but they're still SO GOOD!
    For Your Own Good and What Kind of Mother are on my TBR! Glad that you had fun with the twists in FYOG.
    Why don't I remember you talking about Several People are Typing because this title already draws me in. I want to read more corporate books this year because this is my life. 😂
    Ryan La Sala is a new author on my radar, so I might have to pick up The Honeys first?

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  6 месяцев назад

      HAHHA YESSSS The doorbelll ugh!!! 🙉🙅‍♀️🚫
      RIGHT I agree, like some books that werent full 5 stars I find I may remember or think of longer than some I actually DID rate a full 5! 😅 Those are ones that I feel like I go back in and re-evaluate my rating because the memorability/lasting power of the story has to count for something!
      YES OMG I think you may really enjoy Several People are Typing and get out of it what I did! I work in a corporate environment too and I just felt sooo seen by this book!
      HECK yessss I think The Honeys is such a phenomenal read! I would be SO curious your thoughts on Ryan La Sala's writing, especially in The Honeys!!!

    My Murder is definitely getting read in 2024 for me. I find myself thinking about the synopsis over this past year. Strega is definitely one I'm intrigued by. I like the cover of What Kind of Mother. I think it is funny how books, even if they aren't 5 stars, can live in your brain and impact you throughout the year!

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  7 месяцев назад +1

      OMGGGG I totally want to reread My Murder in 2024 so maybe we can compare our thoughts when you get to it!!! I really wanted to reread it this past year to see if if would make my "best-of" but just ran out of time 😭
      RIGHTTTTT such a good point that even if a book isn't a 5 star it can have a bigger impact then some books I DID actually rate a full 5 which is such an interesting concept actually that makes me want to kind of re-evaluate how I rate books now 🤔

    • @Danni.Dabbles
      @Danni.Dabbles 6 месяцев назад

      @@mikalareads I'll let you know when I get to My Murder. We can chat!
      I think I'm going to do quarter rating this year and I also think I'm going to start giving myself at least a day or two after finishing a book before I rate it. I think I have been rating higher because I'm pumped from the ending of books. I need to breath a bit and come back and really think through my thoughts.

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  6 месяцев назад

    Ugh I def need to finally start reading some Agatha Christie! I’ve halfway mentally committed to getting into Stephen King though, and my tbr’s are piles of lies already anyway!
    There’s soooooo much shame in convos about “classics.” I’m someone who theoretically should like the classics but I tried to read some Jane Austen last week and decided not to spend my limited time on it. Yes, her books are interesting examinations of society, but who decided that upper class British social mores in the 1800s was a universal interest? Sometimes I think there are Downton Abbey people and there are Boardwalk Empire people. Same era, but vastly different stories and storytelling.
    I hope you’re having a good last stretch of 2023!!!! 💜🌺👻💀💀👻🌺🌺💜💜💜💜

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  7 месяцев назад

      Oh my gosh your comment made me bust out laughing with: " and my tbr’s are piles of lies already anyway! " - I have never felt SO seen hahah!!!! I really feel like Agatha Christie's works can be so hit or miss but for some reason I keep coming back! I think it may be because they are so short, it's like candy where I just want to devour them all because they are so quick!
      Also for Stephen King, I have yet to read a SK book and as far as now I still dont have a huge amount of interest in him, but you may be able to convince me if you end up recommending something of his!!!
      OOOooooHHhhhh YOU seriously piqued my interest hugely with "there are Downton Abbey people and there are Boardwalk Empire people" - I legitimately now want you to make a video on this concept and give me recommendations for both camps hahah!!! I think thats so interesting because you are really right that Jane Austen's books focus on a side of storytelling that can almost be "Stuffy" and also a tad maybe pretentious even!
      I totally respect you for DNFing the JA that you were reading and not forcing yourself to continue with it - I feel like it can be so hard to DNF books that are almost considered "staples" in literature but I am with you that we only have a limited amount of time and no one can convince me that I have to read anything just because it was written in the 1800s and that somehow makes it better than modern literature LOL!
      I seriously hope you are having a phenomenal new year and get to find so many amazing reads in 2024!!! 💌🥰📚💗💖
