I was in Rota back in 1969 led there by a friend named David Q. He owned a boat and the hotel there on the island and he showed us the island life including the Coconut Crab. We had them roasted with spices and OMG...they are truly a delicacy. The people of Rota were very nice to us and they made sure we had a great time. Like you said, do something out of the box and see the world. I would go back in a heartbeat. The real irony was that there were crabs walking around in places like that beach where you got the bait when I was there. I'm talking big coconut crabs too. Oh...and they would break your finger. Have to admit, the first time I ever saw coconut crabs, it was a huge migration of them, and the first thought that ran through my mind was "my God... can you eat those?!"
The simplicity of cooking in the islands is so awesome. Family, food and the lack of outside interuptions make it super special. Thanks Robert!!! Ps she lost me when she put the gut paste in that otherwise epic looking crab salad 🤣

It is so cool that you are showing off the culture of the island. You are showing things that most people don’t think about.
Whale Whale I’m from there
Most people don’t know about.
Every time I tell someone I’m Chamorro (I say Guamanian to white people) they say “oh your from Guatemala?” So this is cool that he’s learning about my culture/ people.
Kickster 170 You must have not spent a lot of time on the mainland. Because I say I’m from Guam, and Samoa and they say “where?” So I give up and say I’m like the Rock.

15:19 Oohhh, he's such a nice guy.
My father was a US Army major in Military Intelligence - spent 3 years fighting all over the South Pacific in WW2 - including around this area but not on the island - US Forces bypassed this island and the Japanese only surrendered at the end. He died in 2009 at the age of 93 - he loved to hunt and fish - I went with him as a kid but after I was in Vietnam I lost the thrill of the outdoors, so I like our cleaning and cooking parts best. I wish he could have lived to see your videos especially in this part of the world. Thanks for all the great work you are doing.
Your father likely spent time on my home island Guam. He likely was apart of the battalion that liberated my people from the brutal grasp of the Japanese (at the time/very different times). Bless him and those who who served.
YahooMurray he probably is he probably is God bless
The people of Rota seem so gracious and nice, keen rather than defensive of a new trick. Story of my life is thinking I've mastered something only to learn more, definitely trying the splash of white vinegar trick on my next batch of prawns.

For anyone wondering about regulations: A license is required to hunt Coconut crabs
and there is a size limitation. During the
hunting season, a Coconut crab can only be
taken if it is over three inches (7.5cm) across
the back shell (carapace). A female crab,
regardless of size, may not be taken when it is
carrying eggs beneath the abdomen (berried).
The only legal means of taking Coconut crabs
is by hand. The bag limit is five with a total
season limit of ten per person. The sale of
Coconut crabs captured in the CNMI is
prohibited. The preserving or mounting of
Coconut crabs for display purposes or the sale
of such crabs within the CNMI is also
prohibited.
I figured as such. Thanks for the clarification. In recent human history it's not usually human hunting that causes a species to become endangered (exceptions: carrier pigeon and American bison, also Louisiana alligator) but rather climate change and/or habitat destruction.
What's CNMI?
Did you see at the end when the cop came in the picture and all of a sudden he starts to talk about how wonderful the island is and how he can't wait to go home and see his beautiful wife and daughter. They cut to this seeing something tells me that got wasn't there for good reasons lol.

So happy to see you experience catching and cooking Coconut Crabs in the Marianas Islands. As you saw, they have a very thick and tough shell, and the pinchers are very dangerous. They've been known to easily sever a man's fingers. That lady prepared a fancy recipe; stuffing the body cap with the pre-cooked meat, pumpkin tips, garlic, onions and tomally, and cooking it all again in coconut milk. A simple more common preparation would be to second cook them for a short while in coconut milk with the shells cracked but still on. Serve over rice with the coconut milk sauce from the pot. Yum! The meat is so delicious and sweet! It's the crab of choice for me. My Dad says he always put a little vinegar in the parboil water to help loosen up the meat froom the shell, same like you suggested. BTW, deer meat caught on island and cooked in seasonings and coconut milk is the best! It's my most favorite soup and part of my most precious memories of my dad, his brother and boy cousins hunting, fishing and cooking on the neighboring island of Guam. The crabs you guys caught were small ones compared to the ones I remember Dad catching. They were between 2 to 3 feet across, pincher to pincher, real scary monsters! Actually, I subscribed to your channel years ago because what you love sharing with us viewers reminds me of them and those days. I look forward to the rest of your experiences in the Marianas and beyond. Thanks and great job!
What are pumpkin tips? Do you mean pumpkin leaves? I am glad to learn the tip about adding distilled white vinegar to the water to make crab meat not stick to the shell.
@@gailfeddern7798 - PK's mom used what she called "pimpkin tips" in her stuffed crab mixture. The tips are only the youngest part of the pumpkin vine. It's the most tender part that includes the stem, leaves and curly cues.; usually the last 1 to 2 feet of the tip of the vine, hence "pumpkin tips". It's fuzzy so before cooking it's bestt when peeled to remove the fuzz and threads much like one would peel celery stalks.
Coconut crab. More like coconut spider
Gabriel Chalmers ha. Ha. Ha. I like these jokes because they are so random 😂
Well. It does look creepy, but its to big to be a spider😀😀😀funny.
That time you remember that crustaceans are arthropods just like insects, scorpions, and spiders. Ugh. In college I took invertebrate zoology, wasn't able to eat crawfish again for about three years. That's a tragedy for a southern Louisiana native. By the way, don't ever call them 'crayfish' if you're in southern Louisiana, unless you want to get laughed at. Even the crawfish themselves find it insulting.
@@josephledux8598 Crawfish? You surely mean Crawdads...

D3 Showtime not everyone is as selfcentered and a jerk as you apparently are the people over this channel seem to be pretty down to earth and caring people who still believe in helping others that's what's wrong with the world today is that people think all about money instead of trying to help the less fortunate or having any Morales or values they have sold out and got away from the word of God

I was 'the ship's driver' during the atomic bomb tests in 61-62 at Christmas Island south of Hawaii. Several times a week, I was detailed to take the ship's truck and pick up my ship's Officers from the Officers Club and take them back to the landing and then to the ship at anchor. These crabs were on the move and I estimate that there were maybe 3 or 4 in every square yard. Couldn't avoid running over them. Probably killer several thousand during the time that we were there. There were so many crossing the road that I had to slow way down as it was slippery on the road due to road kill. I don't know if the natives there ate them or not - we had absolutely NO contact with the natives.
Big coconut crab!
An attractive video for crustacean lovers!
This takes me back to happy tropical memories. One of my friends family owned a private island in the Maldives, and we would go there every year and one of the things we did was hunt coconut crabs. It was so much fun, the island was full of big huge ones. Fishing was also amazing. They sold the island years ago and now there’s a resort there. Really miss the island as it was.
