The page on Cole’s human form always made me laugh. For a second there, I forgot that Phoebe’s suppose to be a 20-something woman and not a teenager/child. Not to mention the photo used lol.
I cannot believe I’m admitting this, but I once wrote a Charmed fan ficion under the pen name Prujo because of this episode. To my defense I as like 13/14. I don’t remember the details of the story, but I’m pretty sure it was a Prue/Cole story because I thought they way better chemistry.
This is why I miss Prue--she was a check on Phoebe's stupidity and defacing family heirlooms. It also sucked to lose Shannen since she wasn't afraid to criticize the show and took the initiative to take on more by directing despite the script's limitations (we can't blame her for French Stewart).
I wish the network had booted Brad Kern and Alyssa. I love all 4 sisters. But they really ruined Phoebe and Piper's character development in the second half of the show. I hate how they stripped Phoebe and Piper of their more enduring traits. Phoebe was flawed and sometimes naive in the first 2 seasons. But she had common sense. I know we can't know for certain if Shannen had stayed and Alyssa had left. If the show's direction would have gone better. But I genuinely believe a sisterhood of Prue, Piper, and Paige had more potential than Piper, Phoebe, and Paige. (I don't hate the second trio. But I know for sure Prue wouldn't let Piper avoid her charmed one responsibilities).
Regarding the unorganized Book of Shadows: during the Nymphs just wanna have fun episode (which seems like a great candidate for a future podcast!) Paige makes an effort to categorize the book by colour coding it. To the dismay of Piper of course!
i never got why piper was so pressed about paige’s efforts true, all those tags were not aesthetically pleasing,, but MANY times it took the sisters a while to reference/research in the book and sometimes it took another sister to double-check before they locked on the right demon AND organizing the book lends an advantage as they can get a look at all the types of entities after them/other forces of good
This is WAAAAY off topic, but there's serious scholarly work on the arrangements of ancient documents. One of the biggest questions is on the arrangement of the Torah, wherein laws about clothing are smack dab next to absolute morals laws like, "don't prostitute your sister." So, it does make sense that their book is piecemeal, especially considering how many times they alter one spell for a different occasion.
(rewatching the episode before watching the rewind) Oh my god, the investigator said about the guy who died in the beginning, "Yeah, his wife died a few months ago. Never did get over it." ...beloved wife died MONTHS ago and the guy isn't "over it"? What the hell, Show?
Here's my new theory I just came up with: Phoebe never actually turned back from a banshee, hence everything she ever says and does from this point forward. 😆
@6:54 Thats even *more* hilariously awkward to imagine Prue of allll people, taking a photo of Cole, _especially_ posing like that. Prue standing there, what, maybe 3 to 5 feet away from him, looking through her camera lens, and GAHHkk, sees cheesy ass Cole in his Calvin Klein -like sweater there , chin in palm in all its glory. But hay, remember, he likes walks in the *park,* jazz, & fine wine….🤣
I don't know why I care enough about this to correct it but 'blinking' is a specific type of teleportation that warlocks use, and it literally needs you to blink with your eyes - which is why they use flashbang-like potions in the episode they are fighting the warlocks to prevent them from escaping by blinking. What Cole uses is a type of demon teleportation referred to as 'shimmering' and is the most common type of teleportation amongst demons - although it seems to vary greatly in ability between demons regarding speed and distance you can cover, with Cole's shimmering allowing him to even time-travel at times.
I love these episodes you two do. I think memory serves but Grams had her own Cole type entry with the Necromancer I think in season five? Anyways this was a real treat in time for Easter.
That photo just screams: "I'm an actor, a singer, AND a living avatar of evil. I'm a triple-threat!" And fun fact! No one knows the exact origin of the "cool S" you were talking about. There's been a surprising amount of research done, only more surprisingly: it turned up very little about its origin, only that it goes back further than most people expect.
Back when Charmed was good, also this is when Phoebe turned into PhoeMe into her downward spiral. After she destroyed the power stripping potion in the previous episode out of spite. Also a Banshee totally fits what Phoebe becomes later in the show! Especially when this Season (Season 3) was the beginning of that, the moment she started obsessing over Cole changed her personality, because prior to this she was the one who cared the most about helping people. And Cole was manipulated by someone into murdering a witch and Phoebe stabotaged his attempt at being mortal by breaking the power stripping potion out of spite. Basically similar to her vanquishing the Wizard in Season 4. Also Allison to explain this was the last appearance of their cat Kit, as the Cat I believe passed away after this episode.. Actually the Season 4 episode A Paige From the Past, was originally suppose to take place on Christmas.
Yay! Another Charmed Rewind! About to settle down and take a listen. This is the episode that Phoebe scotch tapes the Sears Catalog photos of Cole in the Book of Shadows, isn't it? Already laughing in anticipation!
When I first saw the thumbnail I was like "haha funny fake text they put on Cole's page, but let's hear what she actually wrote" ...That's the actual text?! Also at most I could see their ancestors MAYBE leaving a page empty next to Baltazar for future additions on his human form - assumimg it was known he had one? But if so, yeah, Phoebe didn't make good use of that space at all.
Love these episodes! You and Phelan are always fun and make me laugh even though I've never watched a single episode of Charmed. It feels like hanging out with a couple friends while I run errands and get work done. Thanks, you two!
Can we talk about how Phoebe just blindly believes in Cole, but then when she witnesses him being magically manipulated into killing the witch, she just will not listen to reason? Or how Cole NEVER tells his supposed "best friend" about his father's soul being held captive? The writing is just so flaky and unintelligent and inconsistent.
There has to be a timeline where instead of killing off Prue in the next ep, she stayed a dog, and Phoebe stayed a banshee but good, and the following seasons were them and Piper as protagonists. Paige never met them and lived a happy life. Also Leo lost his orbs, so Wyatt and Chris never existed. Perfect show
Heh, this is the next episode I have to watch and I'll get to hear Allison's analysis about it. Neat. Incidentally, I'm sure the Patreon sponsors like to get to vote on these episodes, but I wish you would have just started at the beginning and done these in-depth reviews in order.
38:59 Also (me and my brother watched this episode a few days ago actually) when we are first introduced to Chris when the girls were goddesses; the way he said hi to Paige was eyebrow raising 🤨
i kept hearing he was originally suppsed to be a love interest for phoebe or paige. but when holly got pregnant he became her second future kid instead.
1. I have a feeling that whole Cole description is more about Juilan himself. 2. The title sort of work because of the third film in the series where the dogs were dubbed over instead of the babies.
I always hated how childish the BOS entry was! Wouldit have been so hard to have some artist draw the entry with a bit more finesse? Or at least have a scene in which the book magically adapts it to look like the other entries?
WHAT I thought the image of the book of shadows was a photoshopped pic u made for fun. Especially bc the episode has prue as a dog & it says Cole enjoys WALKS in the PARK 💀
Ah an episode that centers on how phoebe and cole feel about each other, what a breath of fresh air that had to be in the writing room. The fact that this is a somehow more entertaining version of the mermaid episode kind of boggles the mind, but a cute dog IS a better story element than a fearless immortal pregnant person.
Everyone knows our savior Phoebe Halliwell returned to earth after three days, for neither Heaven or Hell wanted to deal with such an insufferable ego. May her reign be everlasting, her cruelty unending and her column never run by Leslie. Amen 🙏
54:50 Piper could have blown her sister up though so...💡I just realized how this episode would have ended better. Pheobe as a bansbee makes her first kill (naturally), and then Shannen stays in the show while she, Paige, and Prue reconstitute the Power of 3 and Cole becomes just Evil again because his love for Pheobe drives him into insanity and over time becomes a good frenemy to the Charmed Ones.
PS kit the cat _never dies_ Lol seriously tho, iirc, you don’t see it much anymore after this ep, if at all. Its assumed it just ran away, or something, i forget. Its not until season 5 you get an explanation in what I think is titled the “Cat house” episode
So, that was the first autowin usage of the explosion power from Piper, right? The moment they absolutely killed any hope for actual struggle for vanquishing monsters in the series and will be all about if Piper cares?
remember this episode. also funny is because of time travel in season 5 episode cat house.... there'sr another phoebe with paige who appear in the living room while piper, phoebe and leo are talking about dog prue at the stairs. so they technically could have had the power of five or power of 3 and power of 2 to undo the time travel spell. if they couldn't get to their piper later. leo could have just memory dusted them alll to preserve the future. xD
Who Let the Dogs Out was made for the Rugrats in Paris movie. I watched the commercials and the movie several times as a kid. Please pay no mind to me now that I have realized that movie came out in 2000 and I was only 7 years old.
Second-to-last Shannen Doherty episode before they kill her character off... Prue's a bitch - and then she dies! Apparently Doherty's departure from the show was announced on the same day this episode orginally aired. I wonder if the showrunners and writers were trying to make a symbolic statement with the whole "dog/bitch gets hit by a car" thing? See what "yapping" to us gets you? Enough with the "bitch fights" behind the scenes? Commentary on her irresponsible drunk driving antics around that time? Maybe I'm projecting - but this show was not made by very nice people. And it didn't star very nice people either.
You always know how an actor gets along with TPTB when you see how they exit. It definitely seemed like a toxic set especially once Connie Burge was pushed out and Alyssa Milano dominated all.
I can imagine Phelan walking into the room and Allison pushing a notebook into his hands and telling him it is time to watch Phoebe turn the Book of Shadows into a scrapbook and Prue turn into a dog. Out jumps Sub-Zero telling Allison that he finished freezing all the locks so Phelan cannot escape this time. Of course The Hoff has eaten all of the hamburgers again.
@@darnellmajor9016 The mental image of Piper with Jarrett’s mannerisms, yes. You know you can picture her blowing some clown up and then Jackie Fargo strutting for thirty seconds, letting some innocent to get eaten by a demon and tapping her temple, shrieking at Leo “AIN’T I GREAT?!?”

I always like to imagine that Allison is making Phelan do these charmed reviews by gunpoint. Having a real Leo and Piper moment.
The show is the one holding them at gunpoint

That's a different type of TV show
The page on Cole’s human form always made me laugh. For a second there, I forgot that Phoebe’s suppose to be a 20-something woman and not a teenager/child. Not to mention the photo used lol.
I would have loved it if Prue and Piper had told Phoebe "You're not allowed to write in the book anymore" after seeing that horrendous entry.
So did they ever tell Darryl he can stop looking for a dog?

Kinda brilliant really
Look, we all remember the '90s/early-2000s. If you weren't writing awful fanfiction, you were BORING.
This is why I miss Prue--she was a check on Phoebe's stupidity and defacing family heirlooms. It also sucked to lose Shannen since she wasn't afraid to criticize the show and took the initiative to take on more by directing despite the script's limitations (we can't blame her for French Stewart).
