When I first heard the original theme for Howls moving castle I imagined a dance at the ball with your loved one, with fancy clothes in a magnificent mansion. But this almost feels like dancing with the corpse of your loved one in an abandoned mansion. With only candle lights to illuminate the setting.. also it feels like this song is moving at a faster pace as if your dancing alone.
Wish he was the villian instead, i'd take Sophie vs a evil wizard over the romance (even though it was cute). Maybe she learns how to use magic from the witch that cursed her or something. And the scarecrow could be Howl's spy. And Howl just wants the war to keep going and going and going. And it ends with him dying, and Sophie now owning the Castle, making sure it never falls into the wrong hands again.
*If it was accurate on Howl as a characater. Book Howl is moody and childish but endearing and sweet. The movie is most likely an idealized version of himself he'd tell to his kids 😂
This song captured the darkness that both Calcifer and Howl shares, Calcifer loses his freedom but gains a heart but is bound to serve, Howl becomes heartless (in the emotional sense as well) but gains more freedom.
In the end really hes just selfish and a coward, not heartless, because it's more like him and Calcifer share the heart, not that he lost it. He fell in love with Sophie "without" it anyways, he just played up the rumors and infamy to worsen his reputation. And in the movie the girls he goes through are in search of Sophie. In the book hes more of a player.
Indeed Howl is selfish, he gained freedom and power but deep down he is a kind hearted child that didn't want to leave the star to die . Calsifer himself said it that he didn't want to die.
I feel like Howl would play this after a long day of Sophie being out and about as he’s passive aggressively lamenting about how lonely he was all day without her, being the true dramatic king he is
Is it weird that I still hear a certain joy in it? Like, it feels almost frantic or manic at times, but it still has quite a lot of energy. I am imagining this would have been the score, if Howl had actually been the evil wizard without a heart, the general population makes him out to be.
I agree, you can still feel that lightness in your heart listening to it. To me it felt like a sad kind of happy but on the more frantic parts it felt like a manic happy.

This sounds so good. Everytime when you hit a note it feels like dancing in the dark in a hall of an castle. Every note you hit is one step in the dark. This is so beautiful 😭😍
this feels like being trapped in a celebration or ballroom gathering with the fae, and slowly going insane as you realize the party has been going on for too long, and eventually you do escape and realize you've been missing for 60 years and everyone you knew is dead
No matter how sinister this sounds there's always such a feeling of sadness hidden within Howl's young heart. This song feels almost as though it's expressing Howl's sadness.
It sounds like someone solo dancing a waltz they previously shared with their partner who’s now gone and they’re reminiscing on the past happy memories they shared together but the thought of them being gone fills them with anger.
This version is how Howl views himself and the original is how Sophie views him 🥺 edit: i was just being a Howl fangirl and now i'm literally so stoked that 13k+ people agree with me too hehe
This is the inside of the Howl' s heart before he met with Sophie... note: everyone says he doesnt have a heart or his heart is calcifer etc... GUYS PLS FOCUS TO THE MAIN TOPIC AND CHILL :d
I can imagine a scene while listening to this.. Howl in his castle alone, heart broken, depressed nd ugly( according to him), playing a piano like a crazy man nd crying.. I loved this cover. This gives a feeling if solitude.
This would have actually fit pretty well into the movie if we got more scenes with Howl and his internal struggle. We see it often in the movie, how he’s a good person who cares for his friends. But there’s still a darkness to him. That was something Sophie and him had to face together.
The reason why i love this so much is that its the perfect soundtrack for the book. There's more of a mystery setting in the book that makes you wonder if he eats hearts and Sophie explores his life trying to uncover his secrets.
You know, my ex of 10 years loved this movie and would frequently play this exactly song on our piano. It always sounded sweet to me, when she played. About five years ago, on our anniversary I walked in on her sleeping with my best friend with a ring I had gotten her to propose in my pocket. Needless to say, I never proposed. Every since then I've never been able to hear the song without Breaking down which sucks because I genuinely enjoyed the song and the movie. This iteration feels right to me, in a twisted way. Thank you, even if it wasn't your intention.
Alt. Universe: Sophie dies, Howl's heart burns out. Howl Turns evil and destroyes the country. Hatred consumes him and he brings misery and despair to all who stand in his wake.
honestly i didn't find the book to be very dark, tbh i'd even argue the film was darker with the focus of the war and stuff, but it was it a brilliant book anyway!
@@loriflanagan7486 I can see your point. The focus on war is generally darker, but there are things in the book that were a lot more creepy to me that weren’t in the movie. I won’t say what they are here but I think you know if you’ve read it 😂
You can imagine all the deep intense thoughts/feelings you want with this song, but probably the most canon is: It's a dark room, lit only by a few red-flamed candles. Creepy things dangle from the ceiling, and there's silver chains. Howl is writhing about the room, emitting the most heart-wrenching sounds ever to come from man or beast. Blood stains his loose ruffled shirt on the left side, right by his heart which he is gripping with a equally blood-soaked hand. An organ plays itself in a melody that could only have come from Hell. All is despair. Then a beam of light pierced the abyss of death. Who is the radiant figure that stands within the center of the blinding light? Howl raised his ashen hand to shield his blood-red eyes- "HOWL, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!!!!!! I leave for FIVE MINUTES TO GET VEGETABLES FOR DINNER AND THIS IS WHAT YOU DO????? CLEAN THIS MESS UP RIGHT NOW AND COME SET THE TABLE!!!!" "....Yes, Sophie." Howl waves a hand and the room returns to its usual cheery state, and the raspberry-flavored "blood" on his shirt disappears instantly. He sulks off the the bathroom to pout for 10 minutes until Sophie yells at him to get out of there and help her.
(Spoilers if haven’t watched movie) So pretty much the spell was actually broken. I’m the beginning of the movie when Sophie meets Calcifier if you remember if you watched the movie, Sophie and Calcifier make a deal: if Sophie breaks Calcifier a curse to turn free him from his fire form/ contract he would break Sophie’s spell that made her older. So if you have watched the movie then you know that Calcifier is Howls heart but Howl made a contract with the kingdom which led to them stealing Howls heart not necessarily stealing but leaving his heart from his body so that’s why you see Calcifier (his heart) in a fire form where he can’t do anything but to move or power Howls moving castle that’s why in the movie when Sophie took Calcifier out of the house the Castle fell apart. But if you remember well enough in the movie Sophie gets Calcifier and puts it into Howl eventually Howl restores his energy’s and breaks the curse of contract meaning that Calcifier would now brake Sophie spell which he did at the end of the movie that’s why she turned young again and they lived Happily Ever after :)
bruuhh or in the book if sophie had been killed by the witch (or something?? don't remember exact details) because howl couldn't get to her in time to save her
Ngl now I kinda want him to an alt version of Howl's Moving Castle, especially since he'd probably keep the part of The Witch of the Waste stealing male wizard's body parts to create the perfect being
I imagine Sophie clutching onto Howl as the darkness and world is swallowed whole- glimmers of the war shown. Ambers spiralling and rocks shooting by as Howl holds her to his chest. And the chaos spirals around them as Howl's claws show through.. The fires singe his feathers and Sophie scared for Howl- just howl. Brilliant song, I love listening to it on occasions and allowing my imagination to run through the dark steps of some sort of gothic ballroom-! Quite brillant.
But imagine if Sophie did die when she fell, and Howl can't accept it. Howl playing this in the middle of a pool of blood. Gahd that's way more like it.
I like to think this would be a fitting song if the rumors about howl (stealing the hearts of beautiful young girls) were true and he unintentionally stole Sophie’s heart and caused harm to her and his guilt and anxiety begin to eat away at him throughout the song until, like you said, his eternal darkness finally takes hold and corrupts him.
They’re dancing about the room, dark clothes and a melancholy feeling creeping up their spine. The music continues and they still dance, almost like a puppeteer doing it’s magic. And soon they’re both spinning about each other and holding hands, arm strewn around his neck and hands around her waist. Feet stepping to the beat and not a single misstep. The music swaying them, like an enchanting sound that has never been heard before. Eyes looking at each other deeply as the music swifts them into a dip and soon...the music stops.....and it was almost like he was never there. Only the smell of him remained, along with the sound of rain, looking to the left, you realize that the whole wall that was once there is gone now, it is wide open, the rain and thunder making an appearance. Looking about the room, it’s cold, chilly, ‘How did I even get here?’ And then you saw a painting on one of the walls, it was the same boy who spun you around the room.....along with two older figures who appeared to be his parents. ‘But I was just with him’.......

This feels like you're dancing at the midnight hour, bathing the moonlight on your balcony
You can imagine all the deep intense thoughts/feelings you want with this song, but probably the most canon is:
It's a dark room, lit only by a few red-flamed candles.
Howl raised his ashen hand to shield his blood-red eyes-
"HOWL, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!!!!!! I leave for FIVE MINUTES TO GET VEGETABLES FOR DINNER AND THIS IS WHAT YOU DO????? CLEAN THIS MESS UP RIGHT NOW AND COME SET THE TABLE!!!!"
"....Yes, Sophie."
Howl waves a hand and the room returns to its usual cheery state, and the raspberry-flavored "blood" on his shirt disappears instantly.
He sulks off the the bathroom to pout for 10 minutes until Sophie yells at him to get out of there and help her.
That seems extremly accurate. XDD

What howl plays at Sophie’s funeral, realizing the aging spell also cuts her life short
(Spoilers if haven’t watched movie)
So pretty much the spell was actually broken. I’m the beginning of the movie when Sophie meets Calcifier if you remember if you watched the movie, Sophie and Calcifier make a deal: if Sophie breaks Calcifier a curse to turn free him from his fire form/ contract he would break Sophie’s spell that made her older. So if you have watched the movie then you know that Calcifier is Howls heart but Howl made a contract with the kingdom which led to them stealing Howls heart not necessarily stealing but leaving his heart from his body so that’s why you see Calcifier (his heart)
in a fire form where he can’t do anything but to move or power Howls moving castle that’s why in the movie when Sophie took Calcifier out of the house the Castle fell apart.

This is the theme that would play if howl actually fell Into his eternal darkness if it wasn't for Sophie.

I’m not sure how this was in my recommended but I ain’t complaining
