  • Dribbling” is generally associated with going forward or back on the field.
Yet, side movements, maybe even accompanied by a sudden change of direction, can be key in moving or unbalancing an opponent in order to create space to keep the ball or advance on the field.
The Parallel aims to take advantage of the space “outside” of the defender. While the Parallel is generally a pass, the same concept of exploring the outside space can be used in order to beat a defender.
The Counter-Parallel is a cut in the opposite way. The defender was moving outside to close the parallel, so the player with the ball moves the ball to the opposite side.
Finally, the flick (in this case a “self-flick”) is a strategy to avoid having the defender block the move and steal the ball. It allows the ball to go “over-the-foot” of the defender while also slowing the ball down, not allowing it to roll too far away.
All of these components, together or separately, can be applied throughout the field, yet, the flanks, where players are most often “isolated in small scenarios” with more space available are where you will see these movements applied most frequently.

Marcelo excellent would you consider using in game game clips to further highlight and drive home your point of the move and counter move! Keep up the great work!

Thank you. We are working on getting some more footage in training. Unfortunately because of COVID, we can't have contact. We have footage of these movements used at the Pro level, in our "The Paralell" video.
