      This lens is rated for 20fps with the A9 so I don't see how it can be a slow focuser

    • @RotoUK
      @RotoUK  5 лет назад +5

      @@shaolin95 Well it can struggle to find focus is what I mean, it can in optimum conditions shoot up to that but please dont take everything you read on the spec as gospel. This is a real world test and this lens does not grab focus anywhere near as quick as the 55 Zeiss for instance. In low light its even more obvious. Still a great budget lens though! I am impressed for the money.

    Wow. The CA is concerning. But tbh, 90% of clients won’t bother about it. Having said that, it bothers us only.

      D B Sony needed a nifty fifty to go to market in 2016. They only had a 55 with zeiss at that time and that lens cost too much for a conventional hobbyist.

  • @jonhermannsson9231
    @jonhermannsson9231 5 лет назад +1

    spot on - the image quality nice for price - but for pro work the AF speed is a ? mark - I am looking at the 45mm F1.8 Rokinon - what is your take - is it much snappier ?
    I like the Rokinon 35mm F1.4 but heavy and the 50mm F1.4 Rokinon a bit sluggish in AF speed and also heavy - but for price both are nice - especially the 35mm F1.4 - but somethings I am just willing to sacrifice a bit for less weight -
    been eyeing the Sony 35mm F1.8 but it is quite costly - the Sony FE 50mm is good in decent light but struggles in lower light - - so seem like I need to get the Rokinon 45mm F1.8. to be a bit safer -

    • @RotoUK
      @RotoUK  5 лет назад

      I agree with a lot here. I did a review on the 45mm too and I think it is a decent step up on the Sony 50 1.8 but if course you pay a bit more for it.
      You won't go too far wrong with it. The 50 1.8 focuses quick enough but does struggle low light. The 45mm was pretty snappy to be fair. Nice little lens.

      OTOH: I do own the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens which is a fast "normal" angle lens for my A6400 when I need a faster aperture than f/2.8 on the Tamron. I didn't like the Sigma when I first got it but, I have been getting to like it more and more as I use it...

    For a “Normal” person (like me), I mean lets face it. Today days more enthusiast, are buying cameras. I don’t have the statistics but I believe Sony sale more cameras to people who do not do their living from photography than to who they do. That lens, it is perfect for that, and It destroy the samyang af 50 1.4 ( with firmware 32even), I have both and I will sell the crapy samyang. I can deal with focus speed and sharpness. Both are totally acceptable to me and with the newer Bodies of Sony the speed improved a lot.
    The CA's are HORRIBLE. This is one of the worst lenses in this regards and it is a pain to fix in post.
    To check if you can deal with it, jump to the picture in 7:30 and see if something there bothers you.
    If you think there is no problem at all, go get your cheap, super light, decent sharp and fast enough focusing nifty fifty.
    But... If you, like me, see the insane amount of CA (maybe already partially corrected?) creeping along the whole left outside of the brides dress,
    just forget about that lens. It can get a lot worse if you are dealing with backlit situations.
    I WANTED to be able to deal with it, to have a cheap walkaround lens, but at the end you have a worse image quality with slower af-speed
    than some much cheaper combinations of aps-c cameras...

    • @RotoUK
      @RotoUK  4 года назад

      Yep this is my whole review really, if you are using it professionally then just don't
      Then it comes down to how important is all of it. It's a great little lens and I did push it with the outdoor ceremony and the busy leafy shot of the building to show how bad the CA can get.
      It's great for the money and ymif you only have a kit lens then I can easily recommend it as a foray into primes. Especially on a sale deal.
      It's good but CA let's it down. That's it really. 👍

    Budget doesn't mean cheap or rubbish i hate that word, the trouble with reviews like this is comparing ultra pro equipment to this, you cant, thats like comparing a top of the range sony a7 to a hollywood movie camera, its pointless, Or a honda civic to a Porsche - fact of the matter is its a great lens for most people i think, photography can be very snobbish, were living in a golden age where you dont have to spend the earth (although this is still a considered purchase for most people) to get some great tech.

    • @RotoUK
      @RotoUK  4 года назад

      I agree with most of this. It absolutely does not mean rubbish. It should mean cheap though.
      I use the Tamron 28 70 which is the most budget 2.8 zoom out there for Sony and I use as a pro every wedding. I love it.
      I didn't compare to it to say the 55 1.8 and this is a standalone review of the lens. It is great (for the money) but it has its flaws.
      There are many non pros on here that say it is still not good enough for them. I used it on this wedding and delivered some knaves from it.
      I have kept it. I like it 😊

    I'm looking at your images and I hear your words "not bad at all". There is crazy fringing in a lot of your images, really quite un acceptable, and many of your images are not even sharp. I know its a cheap lens and all, but something I could never live with, even if the lens was given to me, and these are peoples wedding photos. Minute 6:00-6:07, have a look at the trees, 7:07-7:20, the wedding dress has a purple glow all around it and images are not tack sharp either. Anyway, thanks for the review, but I'll take it with a grain of salt.

      Yes, I have referenced in these points in the video already.
      This was in addition to my main camera so obviously I wouldn't just run out and use it on its own for any key moments of the day that I couldn't capture as extra.
      It's not good at some points but overall for the price it really is not bad at all!

      @@moviedate8510 I only have the 55 which is better but 5 times the price so not really comparable.

    Man, that purple fringing is horrible! That's kind of a deal breaker for me....

      Yes you get what you pay for on this. It's a kittle worse after rendering and then RUclips compression but it is bad in places 😕
      If pro work I say don't buy it. If not and you don't have a prime it's a great start!

      This is for Sony systems though not Canon? It's actually not much more expensive than the Canon nifty fifty now either 😉
