A Returner is the equivalent of "RUNNING WITH THE BULLS" in Spain, BY YOURSELF, with the fans either cheering for you or against you. All those eyes who are gunning for you. Here's another way to look at it: you're the only lemur surrounded by a pack of foosas and your name isn't King Julian.
Hester was the first kick returner i remember fans constantly saying, "no matter what, don't kick it to him" No body could change a game in an instant like Hester could. You know if he had the ball in his hands, you held your breath.
I don't think he ever made a fair catch; he always took those first few steps straight ahead 'blind' without any consideration who might be two steps away from just blowing him up. He was fearless... or he hid it damn well!
Something that's very sad about this video is that three Detroit sports reporters they have on have all since passed away (Drew Sharp, Tom Kowalski, and Jamie Samuelsen)
I'll go the other way - if Deion wasn't Deion, if he wasn't Primetime, if he wasn't in the Hall of Fame as a cornerback - I'm not sure he even makes this list. We remember him as a flashy guy, but his stats aren't all that spectacular. Sure, he didn't do as many returns as the pure specialists (though he still racked up as many punt returns as Dante Hall) - but if we look at his return average, it doesn't really put him near the top. He did get 9 return TDs over his career, but that still ranks him behind a bunch of other guys. You could argue that if Deion had been a pure returner, dedicated himself to that role, then he totally would've become #1 on this list - and I would support that. But this is a list of return aces - and in terms of just looking at their returns, I don't think Deion belongs at #4. He's kind of like Adam Vinatieri - he's a guy who did it in big spots when the nation was watching, so that's what we remember; but if you look at their actual career numbers, he's not all that spectacular.
The reason that Hester is the best is because ask yourself objectively. Who would you rather have returning that punt or kick? Hester or Brian Mitchell? Which guy do you really believe has the better shot of being the difference maker? It's Hester. Mitchell lasted forever because he was a bigger guy and that's commendable. But it's not about lasting forever. It's about on-field production. Hester is the guy who is going to make the special teams kick away, punt out of bounds, screw up, and then the team capitalizes on the field position.
Chiefs #44 blocked Broncos #27 IN THE BACK on Dante Hall's "pinball return". It should have been Chiefs ball, 1st & 10 at their own 4 yard line after the "half the distance to the goal line" penalty. Dante had plenty of amazing returns, but at least show some that didn't require help from the officials.
That's how you can tell this is old Devin Hester has the most touchdowns by kick return and most touchdowns punt return and that's with teams not wanting to kick the ball to him

I love how most times all the analysts are like he's not the best, then actual players will be like he is the best
Desmond Howard is a great return guy but can’t stand him as an analyst .
Jeremy Krause you and me both
Dante Hall's great season was in 03? Damn I thought it was like 07,08. That long ago. I'm getting old
Deoin sanders at number 4? I would love for someone to explain to me how that even comes close to making sense. Number 1 or number 2, pick one
Prime Time is Number One.
Hester is easily the best kr Specialist ever lmao
At 11:18 as the experts are praising Josh Cribbs for his vision and ability to see the hole, he runs into the back of his own blocker...
The NFL should update this video with some sincere apologies by some guys not recognizing Devin Hester’s greatness
Mitchell.............Mitchell.......Mitchell
The reason that Hester is the best is because ask yourself objectively. Who would you rather have returning that punt or kick? Hester or Brian Mitchell? Which guy do you really believe has the better shot of being the difference maker? It's Hester. Mitchell lasted forever because he was a bigger guy and that's commendable. But it's not about lasting forever. It's about on-field production. Hester is the guy who is going to make the special teams kick away, punt out of bounds, screw up, and then the team capitalizes on the field position.
Wow who ever put Hester number 1 knew what they were talking about
Antwan Randle El comes to mind.
So funny cause a few years later Hester came back dominated and now it’s not even a debate. Devin Hester is the best return man to ever do it!
How fitting for Tomlin to talk about helping from the sidelines
Dante Hall had a block in the back at the 10 yard line that wasn't called. Play it back and you'll see it.
The hate Hester got smh
Chiefs #44 blocked Broncos #27 IN THE BACK on Dante Hall's "pinball return". It should have been Chiefs ball, 1st & 10 at their own 4 yard line after the "half the distance to the goal line" penalty.
Dante had plenty of amazing returns, but at least show some that didn't require help from the officials.
That's how you can tell this is old Devin Hester has the most touchdowns by kick return and most touchdowns punt return and that's with teams not wanting to kick the ball to him
With all the rule changes regarding kick returns, who's the best in the league right now?
Devin Hester first and only player to be 100 speed on Madden !!! #FACT
Billy "White Shoes" Johnson was a great return ace.
I imagine that Darren Sharper has since been edited out of all NFL specials.
Brian Mitchell is the greatest return man in our history but my personal favorite is Dante Hall. I just started so I am curious if he is on here.
