  • Japan is investing in infrastructure to alleviate the economic bottlenecks in ASEAN countries. In Indonesia, it’s building the country’s first MRT project. In Vietnam, it has invested in a network of roads, rail, ports and energy infrastructure. And in the Philippines, it's investing in a flood mitigation project. What do these projects have in common? And why has Japan chosen to invest in them?

One thing that surprises me is, from reading the comments, many people think that Japan just begins to invest in region to compete with China. Actually, Japan has been investing in the region massively since the 80s. Thanks to 1985 Plaza Accord, Yen value increased and Japan had to invest oversea for lower production cost. During that period, Japan invested massively in Thailand, Malaysia Indonesia and other countries. With Japanese investment, many countries developed and moved from lower income to middle income countries. Japan also invested in many infrastructure project. Even there is the competition from China and South Korea in last decades, Japan is still one of the biggest invester in Southeast Asia.

    • @HeresMyView

Wrong! The Plaza Accord stop the economic growth of Japan bcos the US does not tolerate Asian country to compete with US economic power and hegemony. The Accord deliberately caused the Japanese Yen to rise significantly making Japan exports more expensive in US, thus causing a fatal blow to Japan's economy, especially the automotive and electronic Industry. This accelerated into stagnation, known as the Lost Decade. So, for over 30 yrs Japan had remained stagnant. Even reducing interest rate cannot spur economic growth. Japan Central Bank is at a loss. Why? That's your homewk. I'm not doing your macroeconomics homewk for you. Then the US used FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the long arm jurisdiction to bully foreign companies under the guise of economic sanctions, nothing to do with corruptions) to block and steal Toshiba technology, just as they did to Alstom of France. They tried with Huawei but failed. Then tried to ban TikTok in US unless it is acquired by US company. It still failed! US can bully and steal Japan's and France's technology but they cannot do it to China. Until today, Japan is forced to buy US Treasury bills/long term bonds to sustain US national debt, still rising and counting at 31.4 TRILLION $. That's why US can continue printing the $ to support its 800 military bases around the world to fund perpetual wars globally and buy imported goods, oil and food. They export inflation to other countries. The US$ is not supported by the gold reserve (abolished in 1971 by Pres Nixon). Long story short, it is just a piece of paper based on trust by US govt. How long do you think this can continue? Printing Monopoly Money to buy imports and increasing military spending yr after yr. They need wars to sustain it.

Japan's approach to foreign infrastructure development is so radically different from China's Belt & Road Initiative. Japan required Indonesia to spend only 30% of the funding on Japanese components, so Indonesia was able to use a lot of local labor and suppliers. China typically uses almost exclusively Chinese construction firms with Chinese materials, Chinese components, Chinese labor, and puts virtually no money into the local economy. And the care and thoughtful planning Japan put into typhoon flood mitigation in the Philippines is a stark contrast to the reckless, slapdash, "tofu dreg" construction Chinese firms are infamous for - just look at all the dams, hydroelectric plants, and other BRI mega projects around the world that are now falling apart.

    • @netizencapet

Not all Japanese companies are better than Chinese companies. Just look at the Kobe Steel scandal or Bigmotor. "Tofu dreg" is like saying all American cars suck because Lincoln is a bad car that breaks down. The Chinese have engineering feats that Japan couldn't go like landing on the moon and building their own spacestation, alone. You guys still live in the 90s. China has more active robots than Japan. Wake up.

@@netizencapetWhat is this Japanese quality exactly? Outsourced parts from China/Indonesia? Not many things are made in Japan these days. If they are, they only stay in Japan. Japan exports to the outside world their "rejects". This is a very Japanese mentality. Ironic. Sony, Panasonic, Yamaha, Toyota, Toshiba, etc. All have factories in China, Philippines, and Indonesia. These are for non-Japanese consumers. They don't tell you that because they never will.

China's BRI bid was cheaper than Japan's 5-6 years ago but now it's turned out to be way more expensive as the project went by. The Indonesian Govt must add an additional whopping IDR 20 trillion or USD 1,3 billion to the project over cost underestimation.

    • @lagrangewei

the cost increase did not come from chinese company, it came from indonesian demanding more compensation from their government. nothing china sold changed in pricing, it not china's control that indonesian want more money from their government. furthermore the reason indonesia choose china isn't because it is cheaper, but because china is offering HSR and Japan is only offering traditional rail.

And what I'm saying that I want it more safe than cheap because for a long term maybe it'll be good deal for Philippines. The problem is before the projects could even launch, the budget for it is already divided to some obvious corrupt officials. And its effects is a never ending reconstruction on any roads and bridges. Its obvious wasting money. And it even affects transportation and the economy eventually. So, thats my point.

Rising tension in Asia Pacific. Thailand will see the Indian Ocen opportunities and work more closely with another group BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation). 26% of the world's population is here. That's the old information for Thailand. Japan should update the news. They always act more slowly than China in terms of investment in Thailand. Our’s new long-term strategy is the Southern Economic Corridor Project. It calls “The Land Bridge Megaproject” which will connect Chumphon province on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand to Ranong province on the Andaman Sea, will become a major transit port, with a capacity rivalling Hong Kong. We don't use Dewei port anymore.
