Introduction to Iconography - Thunder Bay Conference

  • In this talk I give a tour of Orthodox iconography and give reference to how these images relate to the question of consciousness, attention and the problem of the imaginal. I will show how this visual and spatial language of the Church is an imaginal participation in the structure of reality.

    My mind is blown right now!! So Samson being related to the sun is crazy now that I think about it. Direct light.
    Moving in and gathering? But also striking down and casting out the ones who don’t belong. And yet he is from the tribe of Dan! How crazy. I have to think more about it but thanks I feel like I had a real breakthrough on something I’ve been heavily thinking about since language of creation.

    Thank you Jonathan! This helps me understand these universal opposites that I saw both in spiritual and material reality. I just recognized them as soft vs hard, round vs pointy or masculine vs feminine. They are especially apparent in John Singer Sargent’s murals in the Boston Public Library “The Triumph of Religion” which depicts heavenly and earthly realities in the vaulted ceiling and on the walls. He uses east vs west in this space to represent right and left. I think there is even a crossover, for Astarte in the pagan end of the vault, on the right side, is standing on the crescent moon. But at the opposite end, the Christian or redeemed end, the Virgin or the Bride is on the left side standing on the crescent moon.

    One thing that I need him or someone else to do is like, ok “that’s what it represents”, but how should I feel about that or how should I now think about it now that I know ...what is represented. Whether I agree with after or not is of no matter to me but I just want to know why it’s so significant

    Maybe this is taking the spacial analogy too far, but if one can have movement towards Christ and away from Christ, can one also have movement that is perpendicular to the concentric/eccentric direction, namely, a circular movement around Christ?
    Would the beings that move along the circular direction be the hierarchy of angels (think of a series of concentric rings centered on Christ)? Or maybe that one is a spiritual being insofar as one moves is a circle around Christ as opposed to towards or away from him? Would that imply that one is an actualized/materialized being insofar as one is participating in the tension inherent in the concentric/eccentric direction?

      Maybe we're 'circumambulating but movable' when we are made of matter - trapped, compressed light - and collapse into the 'fixed but directed' mode when we are without a body.

      Circling around Christ could describe how we believers stumble toward our salvation, constantly veering off course and then repenting back toward God. Or the way the Church has honed its theology, by correcting heresies and counter-heresies. Or the way human societies have tried to correct toward an ideal system.
      Also, consider what this circling motion on a horizontal plane would look like from the front: exactly like the motion of a pendulum.

    I'm trying to understand the connection from consciousness and attention to Iconography and their structures. Just to make sure I understand, he's saying that in these images there are patterns. These patterns tell us what exactly?

      The way in which qualities appear in your awareness. The nature of your attention.

      @@reverie4632 Yes. I'd agree with an internal attention hierarchy. However, this can't be totally accurate because individuals can end up establishing the wrong hierarchies, which can lead to "hell". That is why, I thought, Christianity existed was to help individuals think through their own hierarchies by comparing that with Jesus "the king". But I'm struggling to understand the value hierarchy of Christianity.

      ​@@matthewgardner1473 total hierachy contains its negation, which is not total, and is therefore fractal. Christ is the king of the fractal hierarchy. Hell is the sinner's experience of the Love of God. Everyone worships their own god, which is the unifying principle of their attention hierarchy. Christ is the king of all unifying principles. Jonathan's talk is about the relationship of unity to multiplicity. From a horizontal perspective, the relationship between unity and multiplicity can be visualised as a triangle, which is a hierarchy of attention. From a vertical perspective, the hierarchy of attention would appear as a circle with an inside and an outside, and a centre and its margins. That recurring fourfold fractal transformation of unity to multiplicity and multiplicity back to unity, or that non-duality between duality and non-duality, is what Jonathan is talking about. It is the relationship of something to everything. You are paying attention to something right now. It is also about the transformation of zero to one, or of absence to presence, or the relationship between something and nothing. Nothing is simultaneously something as a word and the no-thingness that is beyond all words. It is the hypostatic union of Christ, which is the relationship of humanity to divinity and of finitude to infinity. Christ as Logos made flesh is translated to Word in English. Hypostasis is also the literal meaning of understanding. Everything is Mary, mother of God, which is tautologically internal to something, which is God the Son, and to nothing, which is the Holy Spirit. God the Father is the source of everything, something and nothing that is simultaneously within everything, something and nothing. You are always paying attention to something, which is why you can only access the Father through the Son. Remember your death and the Resurrection of Christ. It is the final reconciliation of all opposites.

    Sorry, I'm supposdly "analphabète " on all yours knowledge ges...but, Holy Spirit is thé whole...cosmos, all that is Holy Spirit..and hé said "thé Throne of His Glory"..you are lovely, smarts....but you need play more, pay tribut less and, make thé application of the brunch of "signs of the world" you talk about...see results on your own lives.
