The low cost self builds. Am curious how the one that used pallet wood protects the framing and pallet stuff from rot...

Great video, Jenna. I wish there was a place (even just a video) devoted to discussing some of these current tiny house trends. Such as: Tiny homes are no longer tiny; tiny home companies have almost all gone the "luxury" route; more and more people are not buying them to live in but to rent out as AirBNB...etc. As someone who is trying to save up to either buy or DIY and wants one in the spirit of Jay Shafer, and some others that were more modest--- I just feel rather sad and frustrated with the direction the movement has gone. I admire some of these newer tiny homes, but it seems plainly obvious that $100,000 on average is not what alot of people can afford. I saw one the other day that was only 18 feet long for $140k!! just seems crazy to me... am I alone in this?...

I think it’s time, ability and legality that is making tiny homes harder to self-build. Many of us want to go tiny for reasons other than budget also. For me, it’s because I am chronically ill and maintaining my home is becoming harder and harder. With a tiny I can not only have a smaller space that is built around my needs, but I can also put it on my brother’s land and have them nearby in case of emergency. I love self builds and I’ve even renovated homes in the past, it’s just becoming more difficult to do.

I started watching tiny home videos about 10 years ago. This, though, got me receiving videos about homes in buses then vans then minivans and SUVs then in regular cars (sedans, I guess). That is also where my own hopeful future is...living in a minivan/SUV or smaller down the road. If I were to win the lottery, then maybe I'd buy land and build a tiny home form my husband and me, a tiny home for my son, and a tiny home for my daughter. I'd want tiny homes because I don't want a huge house full of stuff to either think about or leave for my kids to think about. I do still watch tiny home videos now and again, but my future is in an easily drivable tiny home.

I really love seeing the DIY tinys….so many unique and artistic touches in these self made homes. I’ll never tire of seeing them. Regarding the “expensive” DIY tiny…. Have those who disagree with it seen the price tags on the motor coaches that start at 500K? I love they have their rig to pull it and they sacrifice nothing in luxury!

Thanks for this bit of editorial.
Even the most expensive on this list was barely what modern AU/NZ builds cost, and it had the feel of a modest luxury yacht.
I do feel personally that it's the low-budget DIY aspect that drew me to tiny houses. Not being on trailers. Not as an income stream for builders; but as an affordable way to own one's own home.
Anyhow, this was great - more, please!

I think there are more people people building their own, however they are not interested in their business being known all over the internet. I enjoy watching channels on here but will never showcase my personal life on youtube. Between tiny homes, cargo trailer as well as various vehicle type conversions, I think more and more people are doing their own, just not posting it on the internet.

I watched all those videos as they came out, I forgot about a couple of them. The revisit was nice. The one with the hobbit door is probably my favorite out of that group of tiny houses.
One of the things I love the most about DIY tiny homes is the pride on people's faces when the show their home and talk about the design and build process. You can't buy that kind of pride.
What would be great would be builders helping DIY'ers to do it themselves with guidance, so it's built properly and safe to live in.
I have seen videos from other countries where people worked with the builder doing whatever parts they can to keep the labor charges down.

The issue my group have run into is zoning - nearly everywhere in our state at least, has so many zoning laws that it makes it near impossible.
plus, flat-out lack of response from the city and county to work with us to move forward with any plans. We have been trying to get things going on land we bought for over a year now. :x
we love our property - the vegetation and wildlife diversity and have so many wonderful plans for it!
However...might have to sell and look elsewhere in the end. 😫😭
I think the truth of it all is that the whole DIY stuff is NOT as easy as it all seems, nor is it as charming. It's a lot of hard work and requires a lot of help and cooperation that many of us simply do not have. A good network of people and good community are also a huge part of it and finding like minds who are willing to work hard and cooperate in this lifestyle is also difficult to find. :/ it almost feels like fantasy.
    edit:
forgot to add a thank you for bring this topic to discussion!

    • @WillardTrees
      @WillardTrees 4 часа назад +1

i should also elaborate a bit further on zoning setbacks we have as an example: most things cannot be built over a certain square footage without permit in our county, let alone be a liveable space without having a septic because they only consider gray water to be sewage and will not allow gray water systems, and must also have a secure clean source of water. unclear if water cache systems count, and such systems can only be built on existing structures here. sewage, water, and electricity must all also be handled by people with permits, and everything must be cleared by the city/county. with the officials basically ghosting everyone, the entire county is basically in shambles - no one can build or repair anything and are forced to rely on places like businesses. This might be more widespread and it may well be that folks are being forced to order their tiny homes from businesses because we simply are not allowed to do them ourselves. :/

Even though I went with a builder for my 240 sq ft tiny, I love the DIY tiny homes and the fact they were the grassroots start of the movement. With the growth of the tiny home industry, there are options to fit almost any budget, and even more options for DIYers like trailers, shells, and even ANSI certification. Thanks for showcasing all types of tiny homes!

I agree. Tiny houses started out as a great way to get out from under the crazy mortgages, but now that they are being mass produced they are just as expensive as a regular home. We bought our regular home for $128,000, 2500 sq ft. In 2015. Tiny houses are now the same price and harder to get a loan for.

Not knowing whether we’d have as many options for a place to park our tiny home is the #1 reason my spouse and I will most likely not DIY, even though it would put a tiny house much, much more in the realm of possibility for us. I don’t know… it’s so heartbreaking. A tiny house on wheels and the stability and security it would bring has been my dream for about 25 years. It genuinely makes my heart hurt.

Suggested names for another video on the roots of The Tiny House Movement: Jay Shafer and Dee Williams. I was happy to see Macy Miller in this one! What about late folk musician Bruce "Utah" Phillips's adapted caboose which he lived in whenever he was recording for Philo Records in North Ferrisburgh, Vermont; I believe it was moved to the Black Butte Center for Railroad Culture in Weed, CA which is at the base of Mount Shasta, and will be used as a sort of Utah Phillips Library and memorial. I was at the recording studio in Vermont back in the day and got to have a look at it. Really tiny, but really cool!. What about Maude's RR car home in the movie Harold and Maude?Just some ideas. Your video is wonderful...thanks for honoring the pioneers; you deserve a lot of credit for helping the THOW movement. I thought I followed your channel a lot, but I don't think I've seen any of these. And while I would probably have a tiny home built or at least roughed in, the best part of a diy is building to suit your needs. For example I would want counters at least a foot higher than standard because I'm 6'6", and if I had a loft it would come with stairs, I hate ladders.

I love the difference between each design - they created what they needed. There’s nothing wrong with using a builder - most of those are $100k and people complain about the price. The average sticks & bricks conventional house is about $150k and up. A decent 5th wheel rated for full time living is $100k.
