The tape is actually made by Fisco and still manufactured in the UK I am pleased to say. The Swedish company you mention bought Fisco in 2008. They are fantastic tapes and come in all sizes too. Great vid thank you.
Ive used one for nearly 10yrs now think im on my 6th bit pricey but great for measuring up brick quantities when quoting at customers houses and also keeping gauge on header courses when its an odd size opening or run so no brick cutting , i just keep checking the distance when nearing the end and start opening up or tightening the joints to suit...all in all a good tool to have
All ok for fresh new work but working on older properties next to useless. My last two projects, the gauge was all over the place, even some 1970's properties I have encountered imperial gauge that they gained on. Trying to match existing imperial gauge that's already high when you have to tooth into existing work be troublesome. Some modern Bricks vary in size on the length also so I wouldn't depend on that either especially on short runs. I don't trust anything but dry bond. I have the tape and it's ok for block work and quick referencing. Keep up the great videos. 👍
I purchased a set of Hultafors chisels. They’re like sharpened short lengths of crowbar with a rubber handle on. Probably a good framing chisel or if you’re thinking of joining the circus as a knife thrower but there are more refined chisels out there to cope with first and second fix carpentry.
I brought this last year as I’m a big fan of Rhodes and the stuff he recommends , I didn’t use it till this year and when I would it out for the first time the piece of shite got stuck for England wouldn’t go back in for anything … thought shit or bust let me open to see if I can fix it and slowly took the cover of and like a fkn clock spring on tension off it went !! I tried everything to get it back together but no joy .. like wtf I didn’t get to use it once 😂😂 I’m just gonna learn my tables this time .😢
I can see that they have there advantages, but myself I’m more than comfortable using a normal measuring tape and find my gauge’s very easy. If I’m setting out for length I just use my 9 times tables (900, 1800, 2700, etc) but take off 10 mm for brick to brick.
230mm bricks in Aus and most brickies I know will use a standard measuring tape or a kwikgauge brand measuring tape that does the same thing as the Hultafors
It’s a great tape, I know my 75 x tables and every other table needed to measure bricks, blocks, and so on but this saves time and not everyone is good with numbers.
when laying Soldiers we use a lufkin spacing ruler. This ruler is used to determine the size of mortar joints when laying soldiers in non modular brick spaces like window sills. The ruler helps you adjust mortar joints as you lay the brick since you may gain or loose the distance in the remaining space if the joints or bricks are fractionally different.
@@RodianBuilds there are two different lufkin rulers in the united states one is for gauging the courses of standard size brick; and the other is for modular size brick
Just ordered one ..can’t wait , I prefer rulers to work with .. tape measures just for longer distances.. usually I make a gauge stick of those kind of rulers for each different job I do
@@JayKTS The rulers are for bricks made in the United States. One is for standard brick and one is modular size brick. I mostly use the Using the Lufkin® “Red End” 636 Brick Mason's Rule for guaging spacing soldiers. I don't use a gauge stick any more. the ruler allows me to check the distance of the remaining open space to see if I have to adjust the the mortar joints as I lay the remaining soldiers; it is very easy to gain or lose space as you lay soldiers even if you previously dry bonded the brick, being off just 1/16 in each mortar joint or in brick width will result in 1 inch of lost or gained space. When I am down to my last 6 soldiers, I check and adjust the mortar joints for each brick and have never wound up having a final mortar joint as tiny as 1/8 inch or as monstrously large as a 3/4 inch joint, or worse yet no room left for a mortar joint or with a brick that will not fit into the space. The ruler does not come with instruction but this link has instruction on its use. www.capcityequipment.com/mblrules0260.html
588158 thanks will check it out ... yup that’s the one I ordered on amazon .. we have a lot of different sizes of bricks to work with here in Belgium , to know the gauges we take the average of 10 bricks out of different packs , in general we work with a 11 or 12 mm joints (headjoints 10mm)
hi there Canadian bricklayer, just starting out and you're videos are very helpful so cheers to that! Also have a question regarding gauging heights using a masonry tape similar to this, Do you simply measure from the starting base to the top corner of a window or door frame and use that number it gives you to work off of ? is it that simple or is there more to it ? Thanks and keep it up
I've had these for years, used to be made by Fisco. I must have at least half a dozen and couldn't work without them. Good idea to extract the blade fully and WD40 it frequently as you know you'll be getting it wet. I can't get on with the belt clips though & always take them off. And I use Blakes & a Belle mixer but not Feb as I only work with lime 😜👍(Steve & Alex) Great video Rod, Regards Tim
Do you know my missus bought me one two years ago and i have still it in garage never used it once as always used normal tape measure but will take it with me Mon and give it a blast 👍
The first thing i learned on a tape measure was how to use it as a walkie talkie radio, "alpha charlie echo calling - do you receive - tango whiskey alpha tango - over"
U.S. bricks are different size (most lay on 3 inches) but they sell 2 different tape measures on amazon that do the same thing but for imperial brick measurement. Great tool
Are bricks in the US different sizes? Lol are any made the same. We have standards, modulars, engineered modulars, queen size, advantage size, king size, Norman size then block sizes. Why can't we stick to standards? Your guess is as good as mine. I wish life was that easy.
Hi Rodian. I’ll be doing a new build soon with very similar plans to what you’ve built. I’m based in Denham, Bucks. My question is - would you be interested in doing the brickwork Or have you got too much going on? Regards, John.
Hi John, I'd be very interested in doing the brickwork on your new build. Send me over an email to rodianbuilds@hotmail.com and we can discuss it further 😁👍🏼
There is a couple of brands. One is called the brick tape. I gave the pick and dip a go today. I couldn’t get the hang of it. Maybe it’s because of our bigger bricks. The 76 mm height is difficult to push the mud up.
BLWP... I’ve always liked the look of these tapes but too tight to buy one 😏. I always have a look at the tapes when we are in Walmart over in the us good prices but I’ve only ever seen them with imperial , no metrics . The people who say you shouldn’t use these are the same people who say no profiles , mixers , feb 🤪🧱👍🏼
They are so handy man! I would be bery interested in seeing one that has imperial measurements on it 🤔 No profiles, mixer or feb....take 10 years to build anything 🤣🤙🏼🧱
Brilliant review mate 👍 I picked one of these up after you showcased it on the house build very early on, think the episode were you was setting out the blockwork for the inner walls. Cracking tape measure, used it when building my outbuilding. Will be using on my garden wall when I start it. Excellent for gauge and setting out 👍👍💪
Some advice for the young trowels watching this: Do not take these tapes on site. They attract the foreman's suspicion and I've seen lads challenged to build without it after becoming too dependant on them for gauging and subsequently getting sacked. Stick to a conventional 8 metre tape.
I’ve just started a 12 week course for brick laying a bloke in the course has one of these it seems to be helping him a lot

For the amount I use one, I think the price is more than worth it. Definitely gets used an incredible amount for both pricing jobs and building 😁👍🏼
@@RodianBuilds deffo the less time im out pricing jobs the more time i can spend at home with the family 👍🏼

In Australia both solid and wirecuts which have 3 holes are the same size imperial bricks, 230 long 110 wide 76 high

Not a fan of 8m tape measures I find them too bulky in a pocket or on my hip prefer a 5m plus there a bit pricey as I'm always knackering my tape!
Aussie standard brick is 230x110x76. Similar tapes are available here.
Interesting to hear the different sizes. I'd be interested to see an Australian version of the tape. May have to look it up now 🤙🏼🧱

Australia gage 86mm
Live in Sheffield 73mm bricks
250x120x65 or 250x120x88 are the most widespread bricks in Estonia. As far as i know at least.
Interesting to hear how the sizes vary in different countries. Thanks for letting me know 😁🤙🏼🧱

I lost mine on a job, was gutted ! 😩
yes we have different sizes
😁👍🏼🧱
Most of the brick on the U.S are 8 inches long, this tape didnt work for me 😭😭😭
LOL been using tape measures in Canada for nearly 40yr every brick manufacturer supplied a tape to mach their bricks
I can’t count for shit so I use my hultsfors brick tape every day👍🏻 they used to be fisco bricktapes
I find it much quicker than a regular tape. Damn handy bit of kit 👌🏼
Rodian Builds 100% anything to make the job easier 👍🏻
Looks a nice tape mate but no good to me I still work in feet n inches
Working old school🧱 I find mm more precise but each to their own.
They’re great these tape measures but they have a horrible habit of jamming up
It took me 3 minutes to transform my tape to into that using a permanent marker and you don’t have to pay nothing
There are dozens of different sized brick in America
Would be absolutely useless for gauge and brick sizes in Canada !
👍
😁👍🏼
