This engine's a beast, I"ve got MILVs, headers, 3.64 diff, and BPC tune... Love it
Noticible gains from that?

Your description was really accurate. Thank you for sharing all these informations.
However, you missed just two points when comparing different N52 generations:
1- the downgraded versions of N52 (US specs) not only lacking the 03 stage manifold & the two DISA valves but they are not equipped too with the heat exchanger attached to the oil filter housing for engine oil cooling. This engine version is mainly dedicated to the 328i models designated N52N.
2- Not all new generation N52 engines equipped with plastic valve cover are lacking the 03 stage manifold. I have an N52K that was installed on a 2009 130i car is equipped with both: the 03 stage manifold with 02 DISA valves and the heat exchanger on oil filter housing.
It is noticeable that these two are inter-related: 03 stage Manifold---->more Power---->more Heat----->additional cooling for engine oil is added.
So I got lucky I guess, I got a silver cover from (March) 2006 on a 530 e61, I am led to believe than not having direct injection they are both more sturdy and potentially accepting lpg conversions?
My 2007 E92 325i N52K have the oil heat exchanger installed. Could it be that the N51 is lack of the heat exchanger. I live in Denmark and all N52’s I have seen here have the heat exchanger installed.
I'm happy with my N52K because in the UK, it's £255 a year cheaper in tax than a car with the old N52. With the money saved I could buy a new valve cover every year!
Forget that mate I don’t look at tax bracket , insurance and all these costs when purchasing a car I get anything I want be it 3.0,4.0,5.0,6.0 I don’t care what it is
BMW Doctor which one is better the n52 or n52k????
Come again, I just bought an old e61 with an n42 silver cover, how is it going to be 255GBP on top, tax on my x5 for a 3l is already 256/y? So I am going to pay 500 quid plus?
I do all my own work on a S55 powered M3, a N55 F30 and soon an E90 for our daughter. Thank you for this video. I needed this to verify that the N52 is definitely what want.
I hope this video has cleared it up AVOID the N55 that engine is plagued in issues and fails big time con rods through the block with ease N52 is the only way
BMW Doctor .. Well I hope that doesn’t happen to my N55? It’s my wife’s 335i! Actually, so far so good on that engine. Just did the VCG @75,000. Other than that it’s been great.
I recently bought a touring 2006 with the n52 1st gen magnesium cover unbeknown to me as new to bmw.when my mechanic saw it he got very excited and proceeded to tell me about this engine and told me not to even think about selling it.and it’s only done 120k and I must admit what a engine it is absolutely love it.
Wow, well done
I have the N52B30 in the 2007 E92 330i. Now with almost 150k km. Not a single problem with this engine, still on its first water pump, touch wood. I do only 8k km a year though.
As we know, indirect injection with no carbon buildup, no HPFP, no turbo failure (normally aspirated) , no overheating. Only one year production run for this N52 in the E92 with 272hp. Then followed by the N53 direct injection also with 272hp.
I like to think of it as a bit of a unicorn :-).
I have the exact same car Nexus. Apr 2007 build E92 330i with the N52B30A (black valve cover) sitting with 89k and not 1 engine fault in 3 years ownership.
I’m drooling.
Some N52 engines with the black valve covers do have 2 disas. Mine does. It's a 2008 X3 3.0si.
I have a 2008 US Z4 3.0 si with the 261 bhp N52 B30 with the black cover. So this may be more applicable to Europe or the UK.
Same here i have a N52 2010 328i 3.0 with 2 disa valves.
I think he's saying the N52 Silver Top has 3 stage and the Black Top went to 2 stage. On the N53, it went to 3 Stage. However.. said that... the 323i Black Top is 2 stage and 325i Black Top is 3 stage
I know my 08 3.0si Z4 with the N52 and it has the 3 stage intake stock and is supposedly 265bhp.
I had bad bmws that made me hate them but I have a e90 now 2010 with n52 and sure love them again thanks for showing what's best and save people money
I must have missed the SULEV N51B30 with the black plastic valve cover and 3 stage manifold lol
A 125i E82 is a detuned (valvetronic) 130i and therefor has the N52B30 with both disa valves. Mine makes 262HP and 322nm. Pretty nice figures for the 130i cab.
Mine is a 125i 2013, what I need to do I order to get those extra horses? Thank you so much
Always everybody was telling me that mine BMW N52B25 1 Gen is crap.... Thank you for this video to prove them wrong! :)
U right bro , however the n52 with the black cover has improvements to the head so the ticking stops , and not forgetting camshaft was also improved cause of the bearing. My neighbour has a 2006 323i from new and bmw changed his engine under motor plan because off the same issues. So far his on 240000km only the ccv was a problem which he got someone to repair and re use his vavle cover. I believe the later n52 is more reliable , i heard a 2005 330i n52 and it had a very bad ticking noise.
that means you didn't look after it mate my N52 is perfect and sorry to tell you the ones with the black valve cover STILL suffer the issue I deal in this engine enough and have 17k subs of N52 with that engine who still suffer the issue with the bearing ledges and ticking
wow. you got such a passion bro. 2022 i am still thinking of getting a N52B25A
Did u get it? I'm also looking at some
What up, Dean! I got a N52B25 2.5 liters 218HP. My car has magnesium valve cover and intake manifold looks similar to yours with 2 disa valves. Is there any way to improve power in this engine without turbo, cutting the head or opening the velves? If I gain something like 30, 40 HP I'd be glad with my bimmer. Happy new year mate!
I saw a dude with n54 intakes secondary cat delete and a tune running 260hp to the crank. Have you done anything to it since?
Honestly surprised there is no decent aftermarket solution for the N51-52 plastic valve cover. There is an aluminum one, but I would not trust it. Plastic valve cover for N51 is now about $500+ so pretty wild.
i’m happy i got my first beamer after being an RX7,is300 owner although i encountered my first beamer issue im excited to get my 328i up and running again
It seams you're bored with a Lexus.
Then bimmwr will turn you into a part-time technician and will decorate your garage tiles with artistic oil drips.
Idk why I can't stay away from BMW ! I must be crazy ha ! Love ur videos thank you for all off them & explaining reasons why cause! Of course I only understand a little! I keep watching over ...
Here in Atlanta USA I have a 2011 bmw 328ixi n51 with 3 stage manifold/disa valves. Has 200k and runs great. Other then burning a little oil which I'm about to do a piston soak on. I used to own a 2007 bmw 328i with n52 engine and no disa valves.
From my understanding the SULEV models here in the US have the three stage manifold but that it's not activated. I know they were sold mostly in California and I think a few other states due to emissions. I have an 09 328i 6spd manual with the sport package and premium package and love it. Its fast but I want to make it faster and plan on doing the three stage manifold and down pipe in the future along with a blue chrome vinyl wrap. My dream BMW is a 440i MSport though with the B58 in it. Great video and I almost had bought a black with brushed aluminum trim 07 330i 6spd manual but someone bought it before I could. That was the bimmer that got away.😔
Do you mind telling me what engine you got, I am in the market for 128i or 135i Manuel and some are with n51 and some have n52 I understand about the emission issue but is there anything else beside that like reliability. Thanks
I have the 09 bmw 328i , N51 emgine. Drives like a dream!! 😎
This engine is in the 325 also both of my cars have it 330i and 325i but I think it’s only for the 2006 models
I have an e83 (x3) and it has a n52 3.0 with both black plastic valve cover with pcv built in and the dissers plugged in and all. Haven't been able to gauge the ECU version
Happy to say that my N52B30 is the first generation grey top with the euro type air intake!
That’s very good to know that means you have the full power version bro the best engine made
And she still purrs happily to redline when asked!
Love your videos. I'm about to buy my 1st bmw. I've owned audi 3.2v6 and 4 2 v8 which I adored. I've owned mazda 3 mps also loved. Now I feel like a change and found 55 plate 130 m sport with 57k miles. My question to you is what should I be looking for at this mileage if anything at all. Pictures of the N52 look bloody clean but you're the expert.
I have a 2007/6 525i w the first gen N52 mag valve covrr
Your right about the N52 first Gen engine that it is one of the best engine. I want to ask you a question about the N51. Can I swap the N51 engine for a N52 engine and dress it back up with the parts from the N51 engine it is also a SULVE engine?
N51 is the best. It has a 15 year/150k mile warranty on some very crucial and expensive parts.
Can you use the warranty in Canada. Most people are saying no but some are saying otherwise
Please lower volume for intro!! Awesome video thank you
Just got a 128i sport pack with a n52b30 I like it a lot already Comin from a m54b30 on its last leg lol
"Avoid at all costs"? Really? The differences don't seem that drastic. There's more to a car than just its motor, I would much prefer the later model car as a whole
Bro its a car not girl in chem class 😂😂
What about the n51 in terms of reliability, and parts used..
Happy New Year Dr. Dean, just to find out? I have a 2010 328i E92 with a sunroof. California N51 engine made in Germany and it has the two disa valves. Great car, handles like a dream. Knowing that the 328i was not made in Europe or as I understand it. Can you inform me, is this unusual or is it rare.. Thank You.
The N52B in the 2007 Z4 puts out 261hp
Could i have put a magnesium valve cover on my N52? I just changed it to a new plastic one
They’re not interchangeable
I got a 1st gen silver top.
It's beautiful
Thanks Dean..my BMW n52..still running good..173k km..
No problem mate and glad to hear it
2006 n52 300k km stil running beautiful
You missed some key points, more important -camshafts on newer engines are better, no rattling and scoring. Same with vanos.
You forgot the headers. They are a lot better in this early model. True 3-1 design with equal length piping. Later models have pressed sheet metal design and are more restrictive.
Hi Dean. Superb content...you are a star!
I have a question:
Was thinking of getting my 2005 (Mag valve cover) N52B25 remapped. Do you have any advice? Thanks m8 👍
I have an N51 in an ‘11 e92 with xdrive, because of the xdrive my manifold has the Disa valves
Came here to find out why my 2009 e92 n51(?) 328i is so fast compared to other ones. This is 2nd one I've owned and I've only ever seen these white on blk. Doesn't have sport pkg but this thing is insanely quick. It is all stock. It brakes super well and acceleration is insane. No pedal commander or mods. Why is this so fast? I've been trying to find a shop for 3 months and I cannot find an answer to this question. Anyone know?
My 2011 f25 xdrive28i has the n52n/t designation which has 258hp!
Didn’t hear anything about the N51. N51 has the 3 Stage manifold in the US. (SULEV) I have it myself. It’s actually pretty common. Every 328i I’ve seen (and went to test drive) had the N51 SULEV with the 3 stage manifold.
Yea here in the states the N51 is more common i currently have 2 of them with over 200k each. Only thing i hate is how expensive the radiator is which is exclusive to the N51.
Thanks for the informative video! Applause from The States!
Hi. I have a 2006 325I with a N52 silver cover and it has the disa valves. But its so slow. You mentioned MSV70... How can I have that updated?
Thank you thank you!! Well explained. Exactly what I was looking for.
n52b25 black valve cover plastic and 3 stage mani stock
Glad you made this video, I found a 128i with the N52n. I still want it because I’m in California and most here are the N51 SULEV motors.
Can the N52n be “fixed” ? Short of the valve cover and a tuned 3stage intake (which is needed either way) it doesn’t seem much worse
N51 has a stage 3 intake already. It’s quite nice.
So what’s the entire story with the bearing ledge wear? Only high revs during cold operation? Or is it lack of oil maintenance and cheap oil/filters?
So the first gen is from which year to which year ?
As someone else has mentioned here. I have a 2007 E92 330i manual N52B30A with a black cover producing 272bhp. What about this engine?? I didn’t hear a mention of it in the vid
Same here
How can a different valve cover effect the power, I'm looking at an 07 325i with N52, 2.5 litre and its 218bhp. Black engine cover, so supposedly n52n or n52k? Unless the official figures are over estimating....
Any idea how to identify the 200kw strongest version? What color is the cover? Which years and chassis models got it?
Thank you! Which BMW X5s have this engine if any?
Hi mate, i have a 2006 630i sport convertible with the n52 268 bhp version 👌 mine has been tweaked and messed around with 😉however and its pushing alot more than 268, a true freight train 🚆 great video and info. Cheers
I love my 2006 530xi n52b30 255 hp. 255k miles.
Your videos are really useful! What’s your take on N52 B25?
It takes very little time to convert plastic valve cover to magnesium though
I have a 2011 N52. Is it possible to swap it with a 2006 or 2007 N52 with all the wires matching and the computer excepting it?
i got the n52b25 in my 2006 e92 coupe. it has a black valve cover. the only thing i know is that bmw put different pistons into the cab and the coupe.. i think thats why he has no oil consumption.
I liked my magnesium valve cover until I found out it was actually warping around cylinder 6 and cost $500 to replace
One solution why are you going to garages !!!
Do the work yourself if not your gonna have your pants pulled down every garage you go too and your ding dong pulled aswell out it’s foreskin
How about DME..is it same or different. Is it MSV 80 can use for both n52 silver and black?
Nice video a lot of useful info, can I get a n52 E46?
Happy new year Dean! Love the video .. that’s the same engine we have in our 2007 530i . The 1st generation! I agree it’s definitely a better engine than the others .
Cheers mate wish the rest of the USA would agree they think the newer one is better even tho it’s restricted on power mate lol
Happy new year to you too mate and your family
BMW Doctor Happy new year to your family as well .. Hope all you guys are doing well.! Glad to see you back in action also .
Chad Riddle yes mate so am I I won’t let you guys down you already know that about me bro I’m loyal to this like your loyal to me
I did email you back mate aswell
BMW Doctor oh yes bro ! Exactly I believe you. Hey what time is it there ? I just seen your reply email shortly ago. Give me a shout tomorrow if that’s ok with you . If I’m right it’s pretty late over there right now ?
Chad Riddle yes mate it is I will give you a bell tommorow mate I got your number mate I will call you your morning time mate
Happy New Year!! Great info. on the difference on the engines , 👍
Happy new year kevin mate
Hello I have a question about the 3 stage intake manifold
I have a n51 which I originally thought was a n52 then I noticed I had a 3 stage so now I’m wondering if I need a tune to use the disa valves ? Or since I already have the 3 stage intake do I need to tune it or is it already using the disa valves properly
( I have a 2008 328i (black head cover) n51 which I thought was a n52 at first but found out it’s a N51 due to the fact my 328i is a SULEV)
hey I was wondering how you can check what engine you have I think someone replaced the engine on my car (before me purchasing ofc) I don’t know which it is I replaced the engine cover and remember the color I’m not sure if it’s an n52 because my car is giving a lot of issues after 1000s of dollars of repairs
@@jaycruz7906sticker on the hood should say sulev engine. also a sticker for the radiator that says it’s ozone protective.
Hello. I have an n52b30A with black cover. Are there any differencies to the N? Thx
happy new years mate! I should have found a 330i but i like the LCI look
Yes mate I know the lci look is very vey nice and much better BUT every single one has there negative you get the nicer car but not the good engine
Then you get the good engine but not the nicer car shame bmw did that and there ain’t no models that have it all
Happy new year to you aswell bro
Like always good information dean good to know for my next bmw happy new year dean and family
Happy new year to you aswell mate have a good one mate 🤛
@@BMWDoctor are you implying if I put a 3 stage manifold in my 2012 e82 n52 that it'll blow gaskets??😱😱
Can I swap the first with the new , I mean black cover on 2008 x5 3.0si
it would really help if you told us what engine was in what models
Hey mate awesome information,I have a 130i m and I’m sure it is a n52 g1 ... bro I’ve got a 911 carrera and my little Beamer hammers I’ve got m4 rims and four pot curved rotars,,, man it freaks people out, I can pretty much go around a ninty degree corner at bout 60-70kmlhr and floor it and within 2secs I’m pulling 80 outta the corner... I love it and these yokos on the 130 , better than the pzeros on the 911 . I’m going for a drive lol
Always wondered if you can retro fit older N52 magnesium to fit newer N52??
@@dflex4180 why not?
Hi Dean! Is the N52B30A engine the "right one" to have?
Yes
Wow that was pretty irritating until i found out that there are differences in the countrys. Here in Germany there is no N52n or N52k... Here the next step (BlackCover) is the N53. It has directinjection and is a real pain in the a**. Many problems... All I know about the disas is that the 523i (N52B25UL) has only the huge disa. Every bigger N52 (B25OL and B30) hast two disas.
Just want to clear a few things up here as I feel like this video is biased and completely ignores the improvements made by BMW to the N52K engine over the original N52.
1. You rarely have to replace the whole valve cover on the N52K unless it is cracked or damaged due to improper installation or high temp.
2. The Y pipe on the PCV system only needs replacing if it is cracked or damage and even then it is $100 for a genuine BMW one.
3. The valve cover gasket is super easy & cheap to replace on the N52K and you don't need to spend additional money on buying 15x torx bolts (one time use) for the valve cover replacement which add up cost wise.
4. The older N52 has the DISA valve which is known to fail which is also an additional expensive cost.
5. The N52K engine has a series of improvements over the original N52K including increase valve stem size on exhaust valves, torsional vibration dampener revision, revised stronger conrods, faster DME, new throttle valve and digital hot film air mass meter.
Yes, BMW as they always do try to save some costs on the newer motor but I'd say both engines are very similar in design/performance. Don't let this video scare you off a BMW with the newer motor.
I have an n52 with 2007 black rocker cover . . Tappets are noisey . I have no faults in engine tried all your tricks just wondering with out faults is the oil pressure ok like would u get vanos faults if ledges were gone
How do I kno what kinda engine do I have?? I have a 2007 328i BMW . I GOTTA CHANGE MY CCV VALVE.. im from the USA WHAT EMGINR DO I GET THE CCV FOR??
What would the possible cause be on my 2011 BMW 328i making it fill the intake with oil? Also, causing it to blow heavy smoke out of the tailpipe?
Question - can I replace my plastic valve cover with a magnesium one?
You could, but you'd need to retrofit the CCV that the magnesium valve cover model had. Or setup a catch can
Found a 2006 e92 330i manual hydraulic steering but has a black engine cover? Thank you
I’ve got the N52B30A 2005 m130i
if i want to find 330i with 1st gen N52 what years should i look for? In what years of production can it be found 2005 / 2006 / 2007?
How about e90 318i I'm gonna get a used one from one of my dad coworkers low mileage and bmw did all the maintenance does the 318i have the gray valve cover if not I don't care I can fix it anyway
The 318i is a four cyl engine Mate
How can I spot the difference between n52 and n53 when buying e90 325i? In Germany.
Black cover 130i are faster than the Silver cover 130i 6.2 sec 0-100 and the black cover 6.0 !
Hey i have a 328I 2007 with a N52N , I bought a 3 stage intake to upgrade and i was wondering do i need to change my valve cover so ccv is relocated under the intake
Excellent and informative video. Thanks Doc. Is it safe to say if you have the 255hp variant that it's the 1st gen N52? My vehicle being a US spec 06 530xi.
It depends isit silver engine cover
@@BMWDoctor Yes sir.
bandity2k you then have the BEST N52 engine ever produced
So how can you tell the difference when car shopping on line is it all pre facelift or is the 1st gen on the face lifted versions too ?
What is a 2011 328i Coupe in the USA?
N52B30AP is the one I have 🎉❤🎉
Gotta love how this is just wrong. I got a black engine cover on my 325i and have 3 stage intake manifold from factory.
BMW125iautovertE88UK with black cover, 215/8bhp, restriction removal to standard map will give you 285bhp or so as far as i've been able to discover. Any info in this regard would be most beneficial for future tyre play :-)
I have a N51. What are my tuning options??
loads of tuning options for this engine mate I have a self made map that fits for N52 & N51 that will be exclusive for members when my membership opens
@@BMWDoctor sounds good to me!

I have N52T, What the disadvantages here?
only found on a forum that it would stand for "Technical update", possibly to make it fit for other models. Not sure about the differences, I found it according to the VIN in a 2010 F10 528i, though the VIN says it's a 530i... strange...
I am swapping my E89 20i with N54.
Do you know if the engine mounts change alot ?
Hi I would like ask what is difference between N52 (190kw) and N52 (195kw) bouth of them with silver cover. Thank you for answer
What year did the 125i e82 change to the black valve block cover ?
does anyone know if you can put a late model N52 long motor into a car with a first gen N52 engine ? struggling to find a good n52 magnesium valve cover engine. and can get a late model one with plastic valve cover no worries.
so the car is a 2005 n52 E90 325i and the motor i can get is from a 2007 e92 325i
Cheers
happy ot swap all accesories . just want to make sure the long motor will fit and all parts can be interchanged .
