  • The SHURE SM7B vs. the ASTON STEALTH
    The legendary Shure SM7B has a frequency response of 50Hz to 20KHz, and a price tag of $399.
    The Aston Stealth has a frequency response of 20Hz to 20KHz, and a price tag of $399.
    Both of these dynamic microphones require A LOT of gain, a minimum of 60 db. So, for the SM7B we will use the Cloudlifter mic pre-amp, and for the Stealth we will use it's integrated mic pre-amp.
    Which of these microphones will win round 1? Legend vs. neoteric. Shure vs. Aston!
    Let's start...
    THE MIC WAR!

    The SM7 requires the cloud lifter which retails at an extra $140. The stealth has an "integrated" pre that requires the phantom power to be turned on. I have to vote for the Stealth

    I like the articulation of the Aston with its clean response in the lower frequencies on this person's voice. The Shure sounds flatter but seems less articulate and not as tight in the low end. Both are good mics, but if I had to choose one for this person's spoken voice, I would choose the Aston. I base this on experience with using the Sure SM7B, the Electro-Voice RE20, the Electro-Voice RE27N/D, and the Heil PR-40 for male voice work. They all sound different and each is an excellent mic. I will most assuredly be adding an Aston Stealth to my mic locker in the near future.

    I own both, I prefer the Stealth. I think the tuning is spot on for my voice. I think it is very under rated. Only flaw it has is it is plosive prone so a pop filter is required.

    Stealth sounds great. I will give it to the Stealth. The phantom power is a awesome deal

    My preference based on these samples is for SM7B. Found the sound more natural, and affected much less by change in working distance. To my taste, the Aston was a bit too bassy, with quite a bit of proximity effect.

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  5 лет назад +3

      The Aston does have a more pronounced proximity effect which is one thing that makes it a bit more "condenser like". Some like it, some don't, which is why we do these tests. Also, keep in mind the SM7B has a cage over the capsule that forces you to stay about 3 inches away, even when right up on the grill. The Stealth keeps you about 2 inches away even when directly on the foam. You can see both of these microphones taken apart in the following videos:
      ruclips.net/video/Vr7CljFkacw/видео.html

      Thanks for the vote.

      Try out an omni mic if you dont want proximity. I have a Stealth mic but I also just got an EV 635 n/d-b. I run that mic into a Cloudlifter and BAM PERFECTION. Look up what House Of Kush has to say about the EV 635a mic. The 635 n/d-b runs hotter and has a neodymium magnet.

      Horrible for Aston Stealth. Tried it on stage for a sax and it was awful for feedback. Swapped it out for an SM57

  • @sonicwingnut
    @sonicwingnut 4 года назад +1

    I like the SM7B here but the Aston is still good and has a lot more potential applications. Also once you factor in budget.. the Stealth is currently £229, the SM7B is £320. Plus if you need a cloudlifter that's an additional £140, so you're effectively looking at double the price for an equivalent SM7B setup.

  • @skylisszthecolossus

    Great comparison. I see the comments below and it may be too late for some lol... The Aston was recorded peaking higher than the Shure that is why many said it sounds sibilant and the S's seem to stand out. Another thing to note is Shure was using a Cloud Lifter and not used for the Aston that makes a lot of difference because no two pres truly sound the same :) For those investing either choice is good! If you want a classic brand go with Shure, if you are adventurous and like a mic that can be used on different sources then go Aston.

    Re20 is my favorite normally for speaking voice. I must admit the steal had a similar caracther but it is way too sibilante on the long run I would find that ear fatiguing and annoying. So I would go with the sm7b

      @ramspencer5492 3 года назад +1

      No, it's not. Lol. Do you when movies what a sibilant Mike sounds like? It's a fairly minor peak.... They both sound great. The V2 setting is a bit much for his voice though.

  • @Venomater2012

    Great video. I have a shure sm7b. Do you think i should get the aston as a second mic or rode podmic or maybe another alternative?

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  5 лет назад +2

      I don't have the Podmic so I can't say, since it's not released yet I can't even buy one - it looks cool though and pretty cheap, I'll try to get one to test eventually. The Aston will make a great addition to your mic locker. It has a wider frequency response than the SM7B and is a bit easier to EQ in post if need be. And of course the fact that it has the pre-amp built-in keeps you from having to buy another pre-amp. If you're gonna be close talking with the Aston (1-3 inches away) make sure you have a pop filter or windscreen available. 4+ inches away it does fine with the included windscreen.
      Another alternative broadcast mic would be the Rode Procaster, I already have some Mic Wars videos pitting it against the SM7B. And of course the RE20 or RE320, but I don't have either of those to test with.

    • @mad1701
      @mad1701 5 лет назад +1

      BenoniStudio I agree completely. I have both mics on two different setups. I use the Rode WS2(wind shield) on my Stealth as a pop filter and it’s a perfect fit. I live in the UK and I’m getting the GoXLR delivered next week(only just released in the EU).

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah the WS2 works on the Aston, I was doing the same thing for some close talking with the Stealth. Its a nice windscreen, though it's about $20 here in the states - its worth having around though. There is another pop filter called the BSW RePop that might work on the Stealth, but I'm not sure if the clamp is large enough. I contacted Aston with a concept design for a new pop filter that slides onto the Stealth and has a thin mesh filter in order to retain as much high-end as possible, but I don't know if they are interested.

    • @mad1701
      @mad1701 5 лет назад

      BenoniStudio yeah the WS2 is pretty expensive for what it is but the mics are pretty expensive anyway, so in light of that the WS2 comparatively inexpensive. Your concept sounds intriguing, hopefully Aston will consider it. Thanks again for your really informative comparison.

  • @MaliuxuL

    I ordered the SM7B. I will use it for live broadcasts. I'm using SSL 2+, do you think I should buy Cloudlifter??

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  3 года назад +1

      The SSL 2+ has a 62dB gain range. They don't state (or I dont see it) if that is +62 or if it's something like -12 to +50...so I am going to assume the range is 0 to +62
      The SM7B for voiceover and podcasting really needs a minimum of 60dB of gain. (65-70 is even better)
      So you could probably get by with the 62dB, but you will have to dime out the pre-amps, which could cause pre-amp noise. I have not used the SSL 2+ so I don't know how quiet the pres are.
      If money is not an issue, I'd go ahead and order a Cloudlifter or similar device, just so you have it on hand. And it's nice to have extra gain available when you need it, it makes the SM7B more usable.
      However, there's no problem with trying it first only using the SSL 2+. If it works, fine, if it does not, you can then order a Cloudlifter.
      There is a similar device coming out later in August that I can't talk about yet, but it is similar to a Cloudlifter except it boosts the signal a bit more and you can plug it right into the mic. I've been using it with my SM7B instead of the Cloudlifter lately. I'll have a video about it once it's released.
      But any of these devices will do essentially the same thing.

    Conclusion... it doesn't matter. For rock vocals, after eq + processing.. I'm guessing NOONE would be able to tell them apart in a final mix.

    The stealth is way too sibilant.

    • @RobinJohnson
      @RobinJohnson 3 года назад

      In comparison to the SM7B it is MORE sibilant yes but that is likely because it is a well-known fact that the SM7B is very NON-sibilant and even WITH a cloud lifter that is also bringing up the noise floor that noise floor is going to compound when stacking takes.

    Aston is too bright and captures too much “S” in this example. The SM7B ends up being the sound my ears find more pleasant. Something tells me that the Aston would take more work to get an appropriate sound on a guitar cab.

    Horrible sounding, that Stealth. Hissy highs. And close-up it sounds like sitting in a bowl. Low-mid nastiness. Aston mics are also generally more noisy than their competitors. more looks and marketing than substance, it seems.
