Amtrak and malfunctioning crossing

- Going down to a railroad crossing in Agency, Iowa to see the westbound "California Zephyr" on June 6, 2011, I found an odd sight. The crossing gates kept going up and down with no train in sight. The first clip is just one cycle out of many of the crossing gates rising and falling. I was later told that this was caused by overheating in the crossing shed.
The second clip is Amtrak #5 passing through the crossing. After which the gates come back down on a car that had been waiting for Amtrak to go by.
The crossing was fixed by the next day.

why did the gates go down when he train was so far back?
This signal was probably a non-gated signal at one point with a mechanical bell. They probably replaced the bell and added gates so it would be much more safer than non-gated crossings.
What kind of scanner is that? and where did you get it? I would love to buy one :)
Was it especially hot then?
I do not see why the signals should activate from heat in the relay shed.

The gates were activated by a ghost train.
The malfunction had sent it another down and up cycle, but before the gates could go up again it got a genuine signal to be down.
It's a Uniden Bearcat 55XLT, it was a gift, and they probably make better ones now.
How do they make the bells ring when they go up
wow usually the bell quits when gates are down. I wish all crossings were like this except with the REAL bell.
As stated in the description, this is the California Zephyr.
I like the bell, but they really should fix the crossing shed.

The car started going through when the gates were going up, and the gates started coming down again as the car went through.
