When I was working in on set data management I had a premade folder structure that I was modifying to fit whatever needs the editor had, but after a few years it didn’t need to be modified most of the times.
The main folder had the production title
Inside it were a folder for each day of shooting and a folder for assets
Inside the assets folder I would put everything the production needed that was not shot by us, everything separated by media type (music, voice re-recordings, foley, audio, videos, images, 3d renders, fonts)
Inside the day folder was a folder for each camera (if we had 2 identical cameras they would be numbered or named differently and a name tag would be placed on the cameras) , same thing for the audio recorders and a folder for reports (each production had different reports needs)
Inside the camera and audio folders was a folder for each memory card dump, if we were working with more than 1 memory card I would number each card so that if there was a problem with a specific memory card we could check everything that was shot on it easily.
Some productions wanted the files to renamed in a specific way, some not.
Organizing the files like that meant that you could import the main folder in any NLE and the structure would stay the same, no messing around.
I would also check everything that was shot for potential problems, if something major showed up I would check with the camera department and the director and they would decide if f they would reshoot or not. If problems were found I would list them in the reports with a very detailed way with timecode and file name
I would also have often transcode and do proxies, if it was the case I would create a second video folder structure inside the day with the transcode or proxy folders named the same way as the memory cards but with proxy or the transcoded codec in the folder name
If needed I could prepare the timelines and do quick edits, those would go in a folder at the top of the hierarchy
Finally if the production was smart and decided to have backups I would also do them and make sure they would not leave all on the same person, taking notes on who had which backup.

But how can you drag and drop full Bin of footage to the Timeline? I'm pretty sure there is a better way than selecting all the clips in each footage folder and drag and drop to timeline. New to DR. Thanks.

Casey - this is the priceless type of video editing I have been looking for. While I am a fashion photographer, I am adding more & more iPhone video (Filmic Pro) footage to my shoots. I have incorporated a lot of the movie production workflow into both my photography, and BTS video - I use an iPad mini with model, location, MUA, etc. details on it, and capture both video & still images at the beginning of each shoot / session. I am going to pin this video to the top of my RUclips, and re-watch every morning of my shoots / sessions, as a reminder of organization. Thanks!

Always set the clap in front of the camera before pressing rec, that way you can see all the information without searching in the video directly on the thumbnail. Saves a lot of time.
+ Some cameras enables you to set the scene/shot metadata directely on set (e.g Blackmagic).
+ If you have a spare friend, some sound recorder also enables you to do that using your phone (e.g Mix-pre )
That way, you don't even have to do the metadata manualy in post-prod, saves huge amount of time

I've been editing in DaVinci for a few years and always been intimidated of recording external audio for fear of it being complex to sync it or just a pain. This definitely gives me motivation for using better microphones through an external recorder.

For time optimization, label the AUDIO scene-take first.
Once you have all the audio done, you can then sync via timecode and it will copy that scene-take information from the audio file and update the video. If you do not have timecode, you can have dual mode enable (audio left side, video right side or vise versa) and start manually syncing the audio to the video. Once you have them aligned and sync them, the slate-take will be updated on the video.
For even more optimization, make sure your audio mixer labels the footage. This can be done between and after takes. With this, you just need to sync from timecode and everything is updated.

Was curious what your were teaching here. Nothing new for me sadly, but there are ways for batch doing a lot of the metadata efficiently on set and with importing that metadata having it properly connected to each of the clips. But that's on the DIT. With BMD Cameras I will often make sure as a camera operator I'm updating the Slate Metadata in Camera to match the Slate before camera rolls. Sound can also do that depending on the audio recorder they are using. Sound Devices MixPre can definitely do it.
One thing that makes life far easier however is to keep the audio in its dedicated folder and select both folders and then all clips inside and Auto Sync via Audio Waveform. It works perfectly for matching up the audio. However, even better is Auto Sync via Timecode! OMG, it's the best. I would have taken things a step further in this tutorial and also shown the manual method for syncing on the Media Page if Timecode and Audio Waveform Sync didn't work. Sometimes with Audio Waveform there's static from a Wireless Lav that causes the waveform method not to sync. Timecode of course will work in that instance, but if you didn't sync with Timecode on set then the manual method is the only other way. Worthwhile for editors to know how to do it.
I recently got the Deity Timecode Box's and love them. In the past I've used Tentacle Sync and that works great as well. Definitely worth the investment for speedy video and audio syncing. And, so helpful for multiple camera shoots.
I also use the Display Name method for me to use the Metadata to display a name over the Filename for the clips: "Scene 3A Take 1" for example. You can also use Smart Bins with the Metadata and that's a great way of organizing the media. That way everything tagged with Scene has its own Bin auto created based on that Metadata and all the clips with that scene number are in it. Really convenient on longer narrative projects.

my search for how to select multiple clips in the import bin led me here, and as soon as you said 'shift and click', I thought [maybe that works in the import bin as well].
so, my logic was to use [Ctrl] and click, which didn't work, but there's no menu options of doing a "select all" [Ctrl-A in Windows] in the bin to click and drag all clips into the timeline.

If you are using BM cameras just get their free app, it works like a slate and inputs metadata direct to the files on the camera; it is dead simple and works great. There are also thrids party options. I realise it works only on the iPad. You use the iPad as the slate as well.

Hey Casey, dope vid! super helpful! I wanted to ask you something, maybe you know how to fix it.
I am trying to import my EXIF metadata from my Sony camera to DR. When I import raw images, I get all the metadata (ISO, aperture, shutter speed...), but when I import my videos (in RAW), they have no metadata information about the aforementioned parameters.
I used Sony Catalyst Browse to see all the EXIF data, which is pretty handy, and I also used it to export that data into a .CSV file which can be imported into DR. HOWEVER, when I go to FILE/IMPORT METADATA TO/MEDIA POOL, I have tried all combinations (do it by name, by path..) but I cannot get to make it work. I does not import anything. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Or how to more easily import the videos into DR with all their metadata on them?
    Thank you guys!

I only edit to make videos of my holidays, birthday parties,...I used to edit with Pinnacle Studio 26. Now I'm changing to DVR as PS26 has problems with the MP4 footage. In PS26 it was possible to import your files by time taken the shot. That was then easy to sort as I use a "normal camera", a drone and a GoPro. So the shots in my media page were sorted by time taken. Is this possible in DVR also? If you use multiple cameras in an irregular way it is very time consuming if you have to sort it in the edit. Do you have an idea if this is possible and then how to do that? Or do you have a better way (I don't use a clapper and I don't want to set all these clips manually) Thank you

All around your proxies you can find in the master settings. You can find the master settings in the bottom right corner. And when you right click at the media you want to generate proxies you can choose a folder where it is saved to. All around your project you can find under file/Projekt Manager/ here you can at a new Projekt Library where your projects will be saved. If necessary you can export here your existing projects to the folder of your choice. Best Regards Phil O.

How are media bins associated with computer folders? In other words, once I've imported media from the computer folder into a media folder, can I move the original files without upsetting Resolve? Or vice versa, can I move the folders in Resolve without moving the original files? I ask because I currently have some video folders on my hard drive sorted by topic. I would prefer to import them, then tag them as a group for that topic, then merge them all into a flat database again so I can search by various key words (tags) instead of duplicating each video clip into multiple folders. Does this mess with Resolve's mind? There are quite a few clips shot over more than a year, so I'm hesitant to dive in and just do it. Thoughts?

Maybe I updated along the way, but suddenly my ability to import came to a screeching halt. It used to be an easy drag and drop, but now I can not import anything into any new projects, via Media, Cut or Edit pages, where it was previously cake. What am I doing stupid? Not, that you are stupid, but me. I know you're not, but what am I and what should I do..? Presently (post other basic, recent and unsuccessful SD card or download file transfers) I'm simply trying to get videos I shot on iPhone (through iCloud) into Resolve. Byzantine or labyrinthine as a concept does not describe what I am going through justice.I managed after hours to get one file as a .mov into the new project. But otherwise...argh.

This is increasing my stress level. When I render to upload to RUclips my video is jerky. (1920x1080, mp4, H.264) I shot the footage on a gopro at 30fps. everything set to 30fps. The original video is smooth but the final result is jerky. The clouds in the sky jump around, the foreground skips from point to point. I was using an external drive to store all my files. I thought that the jerky video was because of transfer speeds between the computer and external drive. It's not an ssd drive. I archived the files and moved everything to my internal disk. I still get the same crappy output. Can you help? any suggestions?
