Use the defence option for your infantry unit, if you don't want your unit chasing the routing enemy unit. Sometimes I forget to use it and as a result I've a hole in my line of units.
one of the best tactics is the square formation, and yes I know its well known for being used by noobs, but you cant deny how effective it is, it basically makes it so that it's impossible to be flanked, and really the only counter is missile cavalry, and not fighting it. Or having 5 times the numbers of the person using the formation.
Hey guys I have a good tactic for Greek flamethrowers Imagine you have 1 town unit ( cheap units ) and one Greek flamethrowers You're facing a 3 venetian heavy infantry You to attack with your town unit and have greek flamethrowers nearby as they have low speed And then you flank the Venetian heavy infantry with Greek flamethrowers and watch all the burned bodies Or if he tries to respond to your flanking move use your Greek flamethrowers to fire from the back of your infantry Note : if you are going to use them from the back of your infantry make sure they are cheap units
I usually position my pikemen on the sides of my infantry column, they're an excellent deterrent against cavalry and if you get their guard ability then they can often be a stone wall.
13:50 I like that tactic. To spice it up I would hide two handed infantry behind the pikes and position the pikes with fairly large (only large enough to fit one cav unit) gaps in between them the enemy will think its a weak spot in your line so when they charge (you will lose some men) and make contact with your main line have your two handed hit them in the side Does that sound like a good plan?
Thanks a lot i love this game and was really frustrated because i could win batlles but i didnt have any real tactics or ideas what to do in some situations (i know its old video but its good!!)
A tactic that is good for pikemen that I do not really like is camping on a hill. I mean, with backup archers and the like, it is easy to hold the hill, but it is quite annoying, because it works MOST of the time. Anyone on the other side would be pissed, especially if they lack the Calvary to flank.my answer to this strategy is the Serpentine, but usually the people who do this have a bunch of Cav to destroy any artillery unguarded, and sometimes, even if you have defense, they would just walk through your formation, especially when there is a lack of pikes in the area.
For anyone who does not know, the Serpentine is a cannon that is really good at taking out infantry, but poor with taking out walls, so AI do not recommend them in the destruction of walls.
I dont really do multiplayer, but there is a tactic I have made use of. Im not sure how effective in that setting. You and the enemy are engaged in the melee and you have heavy infantry in a second line. If you then order the heavy infantry to run straight through the enemy force. Normally, you can separate the enemy army into a few groups. That type of banzai charge can be pretty costly against pike and spear walls.
The Mongols can win Pitch battles without infantry. Naffatun, Mongol Heavy Archers, Mongol Light Lancers, and Mongol Heavy Lancers in the right combinations can be pretty devastating.
They aren't the best since other inf. can beat them. It depends on the stats and money of the unit plus Dis. Imperial knights have maces to do AP dmg, Venetian heavy inf. has the war hammers to do AP dmg too if their charge are done correctly. Dis. Conquistadors are a good all rounder against other inf.
Is it a good idea to send two handed swordsmen in siege towers/ladders against the wall, and use them to sort of carve out a foothold? Yes, I may have gotten the idea from the battle of Helm's deep in Lotr Two towers... Still it has worked out fairly good for me, but it may just have been because I got lucky
+juiuffophiguo Your best units for that role are either heavily armoured infantry, or the Hashashim. 2 hit points allows them to push in and create enough space for your backup inf to get onto the walls.
Ryuuto Hazame I usually have the same problem, and here is why I think it fails: I used Halberd Militia against an enemy force of Calvary while playing as Hungary. Frustrated of my defeat, I went to see why I failed, and personally looked at the stats. I instantly realized the problem: Low defense. The Halberds had a total of possibly 5 defense, including defense upgrades. It seems like Halberds were made to be supported by regular infantry, as if you are caught in a long battle, especially against swords men, the Halberds were not made to survive. Sure, there are other Halberds, but I noticed through each battle that you would need to support Halberds if they want a chance at survival. That is what I think, anyways...
Halberds/pikes are not hand to hand weapons, they can repel charges from cavalry etc but once the enemy is upon them you'll need footsoldiers to move in as pikemen and halberdiers don't carry swords/shields etc.
You forgot about spearmen, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The best use of spearmen is not to use them. There are only a handful of spearmen I would ever bring, and all belong to either Hungary, Egypt, Turks or Moors.
I said that it crushes all tactic because easiest tactic how to protect yourself is to do the same -> no tactic in game at all. And what can we see as first and easiest way how to protect yourself? :D
It doesn't crush all tactic because after the initial charge you must still pull out and use judgement and vary the battle, doing a cav charge will not ruin tactics but enhance them.
do not charge sword infantry into a cav that is charging your pavise xbows because if the cav gets a Clean charge they will decimate not only your pavise but also the swords you charged in so take pikes to protect your missiles.
giancarlo cruz why? Ive tested this on stainless steel mod and my friend tested this out in vanilla. I dont know how about ss but in vanilla spearmen have 8 atack against cav. Once cav goes in and turns back, they lose quite a significant number of men. Now, i know that medieval 2 is kinda fail at portraying spears, when in real life they were best weapons. Most spear units are bad quality and sword units are elites. This means that on multiplayer you could get alot of spearmen. I know that sword units are kinda more cost effective than spearmen. They do like 11 dmg average, but spears have like 2+8 dmg so no big difference. The difference is smaller cost, but that means your spearmen have less defence stats too.
The thing with spearmen in Medieval II vanilla is they're too expensive relative to what they can do. Armored Sergeants are a good example, as the top tier spear unit of most western factions. They cost 540 florins, but you could get a unit of Feudal Knights for 570 florins instead and they can fight infantry or cavalry. Unless you are facing an eastern faction that can't field strong infantry, or you are playing said eastern faction, I'd strongly recommend avoiding spears.
Dauntless07 i guess the 540 is just too high. Still, spears do more damage against cav. If i remember correctly they deal +8 dmg. You can take guys like italian spear militia and they rek.
Well since Landsknetcht are German and were made by Emperor Maximillian based on the Swiss pikemen mercanaries that destroyed Charles duke of Burgundy, and the Swiss and Lansknetcht were rivals and bitterly killed each other, it would make sense that a Swissman would not care to spell the name of his rival correctly.
this series has helped me alot. lol and its 2021
Same
I'm watching this in 2024 ✌🏻

15:03 Your army was Hungry? 😏 Sorry, couldn't resist.

You helped me out so much! Thanks for making the video!

if your opponent has more than 4 units of archers you will just be picked apart because you have given them almost total uncontested use of the field
I sometimes use square, but then you would ideally have a cavalry force to prevent such a thing

Pikemen arent always good on cav
+A Person who actually cares about the world and its facts Depends on the cavalry

without good infantry you can't win
The Mongols can win Pitch battles without infantry.
Naffatun, Mongol Heavy Archers, Mongol Light Lancers, and Mongol Heavy Lancers in the right combinations can be pretty devastating.
I beat 2 Armoured swordsmen and 1 Longbowmen with 2 peasants and 1 mailed knights
You so remind me of the main character from the Netflix series, "Stranger Things". Great job pal :) Packed full of good strat!
The anti Calvary rush would be combined arms
Why weren't Dis. Feudal Knights on your best infantry units?

+juiuffophiguo Generally two handers don't work so well unless they are cheap enough to be worth their their limited use
+juiuffophiguo Your best units for that role are either heavily armoured infantry, or the Hashashim. 2 hit points allows them to push in and create enough space for your backup inf to get onto the walls.
Why everytime when i confront a halberd unit this loses when in the info sais they are effective vs infantry and cav?
Ryuuto Hazame because halberdiers are very bad.
But... why!?

"Meat Shields"
Swissman15 yet you warned vigorously against charging into spears...
Swissman15 I dont' understand why people don't use them? Do you bring pikemen instead?
Spearmen aren't effective enough and are usually a waste, also, many good players use pikemen but they do not suit me.
Swissman15 So how do you play against cav... just anti cav like in ur cavalry video.
Great, i learned you like ice tea and some shit about your sister, i think you said something about spearmen loosing to regular infantry, JEEZ
Do you come from swiserland and does evrybody talks like you over there
He is just American with A Swiss past
Also I think it's pronounce vol-ji-air

this happens after the enemys army is already half strenght? GG WP

this is old but good grief like, practice or something before you do this i cant friggin follow you
