I have a feeling this set is going to be very fondly remembered by players who get into the game with it, it seems like a perfect encapsulation of magic
I think it's feeling at about the right place for a long-term set. There's not much in it that is going to be jammed into *every* deck so that you get sick of seeing it, or big 'feel bads' like exile sweepers, but it still provides solid staples. Calling it 'foundations' really hit the nail on the head I think. They delivered on that design intent. It's providing a lot of cards that can make up the base of a build but not cards that will define builds.
I think in general they did a good job with the power level, making stuff strong enough that some decks will want it, but avoiding stuff like Sheoldred or Fable of the Mirror-Breaker that goes in every deck.
I played magic yesterday for the first time at the foundations pre-release and I'm hooked. Really appreciated the keywords having their rules on the cards. Loved watching these fancy cards getting pulled, that japanese one is fire.
Good to see that it’s getting some new players in like attended, I was worried that it was only going to be the older players being nostalgic about the cards
I think Foundations was a wonderful idea to make Standard more accessible. But they immediately blew that with 6 standard sets a year so we're right back to Standard not being a paper-viable format.
Not to mention, they totally tanked the whole "starter product" thing by making it a set that's got 30 (!) keywords, a ton of wall-of-text cards, and a fair bit of "if-this-then-that-except-otherwise-then...," and cards that aren't happy just being a normal card -- it's like they tried to give everything in the set some kind of utility value... which is fine, but utility value ceases to be valuable when _everything_ has it. A prime example of this is Refute. Refute shouldn't exist. It's a strictly-better version of "Cancel" - a card which was specifically printed because WOTC thought "Counterspell" was too strong at a cost of {U}{U}. Because _so many_ cards in the set have added utility value, it makes the cards that don't feel underwhelming (even when they're powerful in their own right, like Phyrexian Arena). That's not even to mention the inclusion of cards that basically compete with other cards in the same colorspaces -- e.g. Giant Growth (which now is worse because of the combat changes) vs. Anthem of Champions. The entire set somehow feels both sloppy and over-engineered, with no real consistency or care taken to actually make this a good starter set.
Via various markets, I've got a total of 20 (pre)ordered, with 2 foils. Cost was £60 all in. Feels like a decent hedge in case these end up as rare as this video suggests.
@@johnlachman5121 Probably has to more to do with how many different commons there are. A collector booster has five slots for commons and five for rares, but there are more commons that can appear in each slot than there are rares. The collation for rares always seems bad in Collector Boosters as well. You tend to get a lot of the same card, different treatments, but the same named card. Put those together and you get what we saw here.
"French Vanilla" to describe a creature card that just has keywords but no activated/triggered abilities may be the best term I've ever heard and one I'm definitely using from this day forward.
20:16 - Liliana's "mask" is The Chain Veil. 41:30 - that Rise of the Dark Realms appears to have a minor misprint with a little bubble in the middle of it.
This is the first set Im going deep in. Preordered 6 collector booster boxes to see what happens. Excited to have these be standard legal for 5 years, hopefully enough to balance out the insane about UB stuff also being standard legal.
Hare Apparrent is the most rare common in the set it seems haha. Actually more rare than some of the rares and mythics. I like how it's an actual chase card 😆 Oh, I just thought of a combo. Maybe a little too cute. It's an upgrade on a deck that I already have. Amongst other cards the deck already runs: - 3× The Skullspore Nexus - 4× Pugnacious Hammerskull - 4× Ixalli's Lorekeeper - 2× Intrepid Paleontologist - 4× Belligerent Yearling So, we do also have Gigantosaurus in the starter collection. If we can fling it with Callous Sell-Sword that'd be cool. But let us double it's power with 'The Skullspore Nexus' beforehand, and then we might be talking. Plus, when it dies, then we get a 20/20 token. Paleontologist can return Gigantosourus for re-casting. Also powerful if a Yearling is already in play. I don't know if 'Llanowar Elves' should be put in instead of Lorekeeper, or if it's an addition, because Gigantosaurus is 5×G mana. In a gruul deck that'd usually be a nogo. Or maybe it's 2× Paleontologist more. Btw, Hammerskull can make Nexus cost only 2 mana to cast. A potential t3 play. The re-printed Ghalta and 'Twinflame Tyrant' could also be potential candidates for the deck. But again, this might all be a little too cute hehe 😅 Edit: Add in a 'Rogue's Passage' just for good measure 😁
Honestly, the cost of purchasing boxes really feels more expensive than buying singles for me. I get what I want without all the chaff. I do miss the fun though. Love your content by the way.

I've been playing pretty consistently since 2010 and on and off before then, and I think you're right. This set looks pretty awesome. Like Seth said, it's a great encapsulation of what MTG is and has been. Welcome!

I stopped playing just after Theros block wrapped up -- 2014ish?. Looking at the stuff they're putting out now, it feels like WOTC stopped giving any kind of a shit about the quality of their game -- they just want wanna make money, and too many people are now "too invested to quit playing" (and not wanting to realize that's just a sunk cost fallacy). I mean, hell... back when 9th Edition, Ravnica, Coldsnap & Time Spiral were all in standard, the game had already kind of devolved into a sloppy keyword soup with just absolutely bonkers level of power creep.
"preposterous proportions" is really good in commander, you get to attack and potentially wipe out everyone at once or deal huge damage, make them lose their board or lots of HP while you get to keep your creatures and defend on the next turns
No. The chain veil is literally a veil made of chain it has its own card. The mask looks like a Theros underworld mask. No idea why she wears it though.
What would happen if you have a Twinflame Tyrant and an Unstoppable Slasher on your side of the field? If you connect with Slasher and the opponent loses half their life, would Tyrant trigger and they lose the game?

I started playing during the revised / the dark era. I played a significant amount of draft tournaments during the era of the first innistrad set. I have probably participated in 100+ draft tournaments. I want to play again. I just dont have time to follow all the new mechanics. Hopefully "Foundations" keeps the rules the same for a while and I can get back into it.
I was excited for foundations before they announced just how many standard sets there will be next year, it feels like there’s no point to try to make a deck since whatever you make will probably be needing upgrades as soon as you get the singles since the next set will already be dropping soon I’d like to be able to play the standard tournaments at my lgs, but it just feels like there’s too many releases to play it in paper
You should do a update to this video (replay it with new audio if you wish) with updated pricing after the set releases to see price changes on cards. Was it worth the preorder price hype?
I gotta say i’m building a janky red green blue progenitus standard deck. The whole theme is manifest dread and cheat progenitus out through either yarus or hauntwoods shrieker abilities or use kona rescue beastie to cheat out either progenitus or omniscience.
That new over run style card with no evasion on it will be amazing in decks that are already evasion heavy. It's going right into a Slime Against Humanity deck.
I feel like having prices on something like this is very confusing/misleading. The prices already are showing up as vastly higher or lower on TCGplayer for a variety of cards here. Like the bloodthirsty conqueror is going for $30 rn(from a bunch of different sellers), but even that is a drop from $40 a few days ago. That was the standard card too, not foil or anything. The pricing on all of these seems like a bad way to judge this especially prerelease.
@@loganparry2676 It started a video or few back. He also says at the end of this vid. The thought process is expected value from a box generally halves after prices settle. It's a damned if you do damned if you don't really. Less views if no prices, people complain if there are. I think his current set up is prolly as good as it gets for early openings.
I like core sets. Ever since hearthstone did their core update a few years back, it improved class balance a lot. Quinn Tonole's list had one set of pump spells. Red can play aggro cards
Seth, I have a confession to make and a complaint to file. For the longest time, I thought that the name of the card really was "Bugler Rat," and never thought anything of it. I have some in my bulk and as I would scan through them, my eyes would just see a few of the letters and say "yep that checks out. Bugler Rat" and keep moving. Well, not that long ago I was building a deck on Moxfield that needed creatures with discard ETB effects, and I started looking for my good friend and musician, the Bugler Rat. The problem was I couldn't find it listed anywhere. Finally, I went to MTG Gatherer site and searched for 2 mana rats with discard in the text, and to my shock I realized the truth. It is Burglar Rat, not Bugler Rat. I was so sad because now I feel silly making that bugle sound every time I take cards from people's hands.
bro got the best imo etali, best abrade imo ever and the alternate art lemure pp probably doesnt know the back story but that alternate art has a really cool back story when the artist accidentally submitted a piece of a lemur instead of the demune thing they were asking for but that was a fire pack even if it wasnt super valuable. .
Lovestruck beast sees a little bit of play in pioneer as a 5/5 with downside + an adventure to reduce its downside. So, 3 mana 5/5 vanilla would probably see play.
The card quality, especially with the foils, looks really good. Do you know if these are printed in Japan? For at least a good handful of sets, the collector boxes consistently had higher quality cards (less bending, better card stock, more even cuts/edges), but I've noticed a number of recent sets where that wasn't the case - the collector pack cards seem no different than the regular packs. I havent' had a look at the card quality in the Play Boosters yet, but yea - looking really nice in this video at least. There's a different foiling technique that has typically only been found in collector boxes (although not always) - perhaps it is a result of the Japan printer. It's still just called "traditional foil" but I call it "matte foil" because it has a far less metallic shiny quality to it. It just looks a little cleaner and more subtle in my opinion, and the foil element seems to blend better with the colors and art.
Just started playing mtg this year (technically last year but Markov was my first pre release). I've been excited about this set since it was announced and whenever I tell my friends that they're always like "huh??" I'm just really excited to get a solid collection going that's not full of oddball mechanics. I really enjoy the oddball mechanics but as a new player I'm looking forward to seeing more boring classic shit that I can put in pretty much any deck instead of being like eh it has ring tempt/venture into the dungeon etc
What booster box would you suggest buying to try and get the most value back currently? I was thinking of trading some of my older cards for a new collector booster box
As an old player I wanted to hate this set for its print run and rotation but, at least they are cool. Super nice art, cool variance artwork for a lot of cards
Quit complaining about the reprints. At the end of the day, these are GAME PIECES that should be accessible at an affordable price to the player base. Magic cards != stock market.

Besides, if what you were saying were true, then Collector's Boxes wouldn't exist, since the only reason to buy them is to get more expensive versions of cheaper cards, but they always sell like crazy. If you've ever been to a MagicCon, you'll quickly realise how huge the collector side of the game is. The whales are what are keeping this game going, not the people building decks purely to play.
I9:36 I think a creature being like 5 mana 2/20 has a shot. Your never getting through it without a kill spell or deathtouch where as something like a 18/6 is quite easily chumped or killed off with 2 creatures
If you look at Duskmourn, the Japanese text versions of the showcase cards are actually less valuable than English. Sure they are only 33% in English boosters, but in Japanese boosters, its 100%, so it mostly balances out. Also, like most modern foreign cards, the demand for them are way lower, resulting in many stores undercutting prices just to get a sale.
Its a great way to get into modern magic to play casual standard, or a cmdr precon level product to get cmdr players to diversity a little. Sadly for people who used to play standard, rotational change and additive change are very different and the latter misses a lot of what made standard a good base format to play for 20 years. Man, yknow what really showcases the history and nostalgia of this core set? Japanese Anime cards in otherwise all english packs! Just like, yknow what really celebrates ravnica in a set all about the hits of ravnica blocks? Japanese anime cards!
I know Seth has a huge collection, I wonder if he plays paper at his LGS, just because if you play magic all day for work are you going to play in person? I'd say magic in person is way better than digital and I do it but I don't play arena nearly as much
So, I agree on loot, it's a weird concept and it is freaking hideous. Kellan seems like a "new Jace" type main character, which is annoying. Time Stop is kinda ok as it exiles itself and allows an untap step, which is a pretty big difference over a simple Time Warp. I still use my Alpha/Beta Llanowar Elves, so I have not even payed attention to the other treatments, but I am an anime fan so I do like the anime treatments. Lunar Insight will always draw you a single card as lands have a 0 cmc. Green is in a bad way even with "forest elf, go. t2 forest arch druid, go" starts because pyroclasm and slagstorm exist. The white enchantment that brings things back by angels is still kinda cool because you can play it and swing or play it when you have aristocrat pieces in play.
Is the long rotation any different from what we already have? It felt like Sheoldred made games *painful* for half a decade, much like how standard will be a "Is it more then 1-3 mana? UNPLAYABLE DUE TO MONO RED" hell for a looooooooooong time...

this set is REALLY low on $$$ value but is super high on quality and vibes.

This affirmed my theory that if there’s a common that can have any number in a deck you will almost never see it.

Having a 5 year rotation is good, if the core of your deck is built around foundations and you just sub in a few cards every time a set rotates
Somehow I got three Hare Apparent’s, and one of them is foil.
Here's hoping those crazy price hikes go back to $225. Only one box broke even with $250, it's so much worse when you see them selling for $285...
I am really hyped for this set! I saved 300 euros for this one. Which is hella lot for me to spend on MTG.
it makes sense to me like this, rather than print 5 core sets that all or most have a blood artist or reanimate, we just get the one that lasts longer

Love this set for what it can provide for new AND existing players, but 5 years seems a bit long. Think 3 would've been a nice sweet spot.

@@loganparry2676 It started a video or few back. He also says at the end of this vid. The thought process is expected value from a box generally halves after prices settle. It's a damned if you do damned if you don't really. Less views if no prices, people complain if there are. I think his current set up is prolly as good as it gets for early openings.

I like core sets. Ever since hearthstone did their core update a few years back, it improved class balance a lot. Quinn Tonole's list had one set of pump spells. Red can play aggro cards

Seth, I have a confession to make and a complaint to file. For the longest time, I thought that the name of the card really was "Bugler Rat," and never thought anything of it. I have some in my bulk and as I would scan through them, my eyes would just see a few of the letters and say "yep that checks out. Bugler Rat" and keep moving. Well, not that long ago I was building a deck on Moxfield that needed creatures with discard ETB effects, and I started looking for my good friend and musician, the Bugler Rat. The problem was I couldn't find it listed anywhere. Finally, I went to MTG Gatherer site and searched for 2 mana rats with discard in the text, and to my shock I realized the truth. It is Burglar Rat, not Bugler Rat. I was so sad because now I feel silly making that bugle sound every time I take cards from people's hands.

bro got the best imo etali, best abrade imo ever and the alternate art lemure pp probably doesnt know the back story but that alternate art has a really cool back story when the artist accidentally submitted a piece of a lemur instead of the demune thing they were asking for but that was a fire pack even if it wasnt super valuable. .
Lovestruck beast sees a little bit of play in pioneer as a 5/5 with downside + an adventure to reduce its downside. So, 3 mana 5/5 vanilla would probably see play.
The card quality, especially with the foils, looks really good. Do you know if these are printed in Japan? For at least a good handful of sets, the collector boxes consistently had higher quality cards (less bending, better card stock, more even cuts/edges), but I've noticed a number of recent sets where that wasn't the case - the collector pack cards seem no different than the regular packs.
I havent' had a look at the card quality in the Play Boosters yet, but yea - looking really nice in this video at least. There's a different foiling technique that has typically only been found in collector boxes (although not always) - perhaps it is a result of the Japan printer. It's still just called "traditional foil" but I call it "matte foil" because it has a far less metallic shiny quality to it. It just looks a little cleaner and more subtle in my opinion, and the foil element seems to blend better with the colors and art.
The leyline axes can be used for affinity with stuff from phyrexia like the 6 drop nahiri

Just started playing mtg this year (technically last year but Markov was my first pre release). I've been excited about this set since it was announced and whenever I tell my friends that they're always like "huh??" I'm just really excited to get a solid collection going that's not full of oddball mechanics. I really enjoy the oddball mechanics but as a new player I'm looking forward to seeing more boring classic shit that I can put in pretty much any deck instead of being like eh it has ring tempt/venture into the dungeon etc

@@entertainmentinc9735 insane to suggest if all cards were less than $5 the game would die. if anything i think it would thrive. anyone can play any deck in any format and not feel that barrier of entry in something live modern, much less legacy/vintage. hell even $100+ for a reasonable standard deck is enough to make some people not do it.

Besides, if what you were saying were true, then Collector's Boxes wouldn't exist, since the only reason to buy them is to get more expensive versions of cheaper cards, but they always sell like crazy. If you've ever been to a MagicCon, you'll quickly realise how huge the collector side of the game is. The whales are what are keeping this game going, not the people building decks purely to play.

I9:36 I think a creature being like 5 mana 2/20 has a shot. Your never getting through it without a kill spell or deathtouch where as something like a 18/6 is quite easily chumped or killed off with 2 creatures

If you look at Duskmourn, the Japanese text versions of the showcase cards are actually less valuable than English. Sure they are only 33% in English boosters, but in Japanese boosters, its 100%, so it mostly balances out. Also, like most modern foreign cards, the demand for them are way lower, resulting in many stores undercutting prices just to get a sale.

Its a great way to get into modern magic to play casual standard, or a cmdr precon level product to get cmdr players to diversity a little.
Sadly for people who used to play standard, rotational change and additive change are very different and the latter misses a lot of what made standard a good base format to play for 20 years.

They're printing these cards for 5+ years, if the collector edition isn't limited, I imagine the prices will be dropping like a rock

Time Stop is kinda ok as it exiles itself and allows an untap step, which is a pretty big difference over a simple Time Warp.
I still use my Alpha/Beta Llanowar Elves, so I have not even payed attention to the other treatments, but I am an anime fan so I do like the anime treatments.
Lunar Insight will always draw you a single card as lands have a 0 cmc.
Green is in a bad way even with "forest elf, go. t2 forest arch druid, go" starts because pyroclasm and slagstorm exist.
The white enchantment that brings things back by angels is still kinda cool because you can play it and swing or play it when you have aristocrat pieces in play.
