    My best friend in highschool rescued mastiffs and my favorite was Zeus who ended up being a therapy dog. The only time he ever growled was when a guy that one of the kids was dating came to the door and Zeus wouldn't let him in. He was in prison for aggravated assault less than a year later. I trust dogs more than most humans

    I had one exactly like him, same color, same weight, he was the love of my life! His name was Sarge. I got him when he was 3 and I was his fourth (and forever) home. Sadly he passed away at just over 7 from bone cancer in his hind leg. I still miss him every day. I did the same thing, boosting him up into my SUV, which was really hard since he outweighed me by 70 pounds. But I did take him out to parks, camping, even to my office. He really loved kids and babies, especially babies! And I did not allow anyone to ever sit on him, ever! They have hard enough time holding up their own weight! They are not built like horses and they are not amusement rides. They are special dogs, but know what's involved before getting one. You will have drool, you will be cleaning it off the walls, you will do extra clearing and be spending a lot of money to have one. And they are not as athletic as they look but they can swim and they do float surprisingly well. They are snuggly and so cute and most laid back chill dogs ever.

    • @theemanfamily
      @theemanfamily  Год назад +1

      Oh my gosh, we love Sarge 🥹 a true good boy. So sorry to hear about his cancer. You are a HERO for lifting him up into an suv, because I sure as hell won’t even try on my own, but my husband does it hehe. I need to start lifting weights in case of emergencies! We would love to take Winston swimming, I think it would scare him at first but eventually I know he would love it. Did it ever affect Sarge’s ears though (getting water in it)? Do you have any tips for that?

    • @julieinfreddybeachnb5727
      @julieinfreddybeachnb5727 Год назад +1

      @@theemanfamily Thank you, they really are special dogs and I miss my big snugglebug! I tried buying different typed of ramps and stairs for the SUV but he wouldn't trust them. I'm 5'8 and he was still way too heavy for me. Finally after I found a red milk crate in an alley and he would use that as a step. I still had to lift him from the crate the rest of the way. I put the seats down so he had the entire back to lay down. I watched his groom on Girl with Dogs and he had the same ear issues I had to keep at it with the cleaning. He didn't know he could swim until he was 6. Before that, he would get up to his elbows and that was it. I never went in the water myself all those times before. Then one day I went in the river and he followed me in and he floated effortlessly, I guess they are quite buoyant. I thought for sure he would sink because of his weight! I couldn't keep him out of deep water after that. It didn't seem to affect his ears much.

    When you mentioned exercise, I immediately thought of a video that showed up in my Facebook memories a few days ago. It’s an English mastiff doing an agility course, but he’s strolling through so lackadaisically, you could time him on a calendar. The audience happily cheered for the big lug and I’m sure he got a lot of new fans after that.

    I had a St. Bernard. He weighed 185. I can agree with all your points plus! His coat was longer and thicker so more shedding. Luckily for me he loved being vacuumed so much that I had to put him outside to vacuum the house. Slobber so bad I had to wash my hallway walls from 5ft high down. He played with my preschool grandson and only knocked him down accidentally, usually with his tail. He was a handful but I loved him!

      Oh my gosh he sounds like a pure floofball sweetheart, you did a great job getting him used to the vacuum. Winston hates the sound of it (which surprises me how well he does when getting dried at the groomers). Handful is right! I can imagine! But the more work we put into them, the more rewarding it is so it is all worth it!!

    We had a mastiff growing up they’re wonderful. We always had drool rags in every room. We used them a lot, we found he was more comfortable keeping cleaner. It was one of our chores to brush him, once a week we had to fill a grocery bag full of hair. We had pet insurance, our dog was on a special diet and they paid 90% of the cost. It was through Nationwide. We have it on all of dogs. It covers food, doctors and dental. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing, it brings back such sweet memories.

    I have a 10 year old mastiff, Annie. She has been on a raw diet since she was about 4 months old. You are correct, it costs a fortune. But, her father, mother, litter brother, and litter sister are all dead. They lived next door and were fed the cheapest kibble available. Annie has a little arthritis, but aside from that she is totally healthy. We just had a checkup. Even her treats are all raw. She gets no carbs. As for exercise, she ran agility when she was young and did fantastic. One day she decided she was done and left the ring. I respected her decision. We started nose work. She loves it. We go to training every week. It keeps her mind sharp and gives her a job. I highly recommend keeping a mastiff engaged, as they are smart, independent dogs. Well, the slobber and shedding is a negative, but I’d rather have Annie than a clean house. I’ve always had Dobes. She is the first mastiff I’ve loved. Annie is the smartest dog I’ve had. She is my heart dog.

      It’s stories like this that make me so happy about our raw diet decision. We do the same! Even his treats are alll raw, so much cleaner for them. You’ve done a great job on raising Annie!!! We should really look into doing scent work for Winston as well. I’m sure that will reaaallly tire him right out after every session. Thank you for that suggestion!

    Do you find people get scared by him when he’s out in public ? Like do people ever accuse him of being dangerous because of his size/breed or not want him around their dogs or kids (despite being such a good boy)?

    • @theemanfamily
      @theemanfamily  Год назад +16

      People get scared for sure but they’re not obvious about it. Some people will just make eye contact and widen their eyes and we just try and avoid them as much as possible, we understand some people just have a fear of dogs etc. We have not met anyone in person who has accused him of being dangerous, which kind of surprises me (because of some of the stuff people will say online). Most people are just fascinated by his size and how well behaved he is when he meets humans (especially kids) and other dogs!

    Okay so I had a female Mastiff and she weighed about 180 because she was a chunky girl and we found that if you got a little red wagon and you very slowly got her used to it and put in a dog bed that although she was big and derpy that was the best way to take her places because Lord knows her big fat ass was not going to go on long walks with us. I know that it's not feasible for everyone and it's not a stroller but maybe it's an option lol. No they have a lot more wagon options that would probably be better than the red wagon that they had 12 years ago when I had my Kiya

    oh, the shedding... 😂 if you've never had a mastiff you just don't know 😅
    and they also drool. like, gallons...
    so, if you're not quick to get rid of the fur balls, you'll enjoy the experience of clean slobber-plastered hairs 😬
    but, for me at least, it's a small price to pay for the privilege of living with a mastiff ❤
    lots of nose kisses to your beautiful Winston 😘😘😘
    edit:
    on a serious side, I'm inclined to see dog food expenses more as an investment than as a cost: if you cheap out on food you'll be bound to spend that difference times ten on vet bills.
    this goes for every dog breed, but especially for delicate ones (and despite the appearance, molossoids are ALL extremely delicate).
    cheap dog food means allergies, digestive issues, a higher kidney/liver and joints impact, in the long run it may affect thyroid and favor ear infections, and the list may go on.
    over all, good food makes a HUGE difference in terms of lifespan and life quality, and for breeds that are far from being the most longevous this difference is even bigger.
    a good diet, breed and age specific, and a good grooming (that includes ears and nails care, and for mastiffs that little extra attention to nose and paws, to keep an eventual hyperkeratosis in check) are absolute game changer, and worth a lot more than their sheer prize ❤

    • @theemanfamily

      THIS COMMENT IS EVERYTHING!!! Yes!!! Once we switched to a much more expensive raw diet, we noticed that our problems were improved almost instantly. No digestive issues, he even had no more itching on his paws which used to be a problem before, less common and less severe ear infections, no more diarrhea and vomiting after kibble, even less drooling!!! We were so worried about him getting bloat on kibble because he would scarf them down no matter what we did. Thank you so much for this educational comment. How many mastiffs have you owned on your lifetime?? You seem extremely knowledgeable!

  • @Iflie
    @Iflie Год назад

    He'd probably like a lot more grip on the floor but it would have to be rubber or something to be able to clean his drool. On food the same thing is true with cats, a higher digestible protein food with make their poop smaller and less stinky and they need less of it, they coat also gets better. I don't think you can get higher protein than a raw meat diet. I think they put a lot of carbs and filler in dogfood assuming they will do fine but I think many dogs do not have the best gut reaction, showing in a lot of farting and stink.

    • @theemanfamily
      @theemanfamily  Год назад +1

      Yes!! We feed him raw and the farts and the poops are much more improved, no digestive issues either. He used to have diarrhea and vomiting after kibble (no matter what the brand). Once we switched to raw, everything changed-including the amount of drool he produced because he wasn’t as dehydrated.

    We have a 145lb rottie named Thor, and he has two sisters, a pocket pittie and a rhodesian ridgeback named Abbi and Princess respectively. U can see them in my profile pic. Thor drools incessantly and sheds like a beast as well. They all live indoors, and the rottie hair and drool is REAL! We also feed raw so I’m super glad y’all do as well bc it’s absolutely the best option for them. Yes, it’s expensive, but u see the return in less vet visits bc they rarely get sick when eating raw. I do all his grooming, but he’s a psycho with his nails (a lot or rotties r) so he has to go to the vet and get sedated, and that’s really the only time he has to go to the vet. We titer tested all our dogs on their vaccine lvls so they no longer need vaccines. Looking fwd to seeing his life with y’all! 💞

      Omg your pups are adorable angels!!! And yes it took us awhile to get convinced to switch to raw simply because of the price, but oh boy did it absolutely change our lives. Winston used to poop and vomit like crazy on kibble, now everything is at bay. We barely ever have any digestive problems *knock on wood. Oh my gosh you are a brave one for doing the grooming! And I’m sure sedating them is best I can only imagine how scary it is to get your nails clipped, I’m scared to do it to my own children and Winston even. I can only imagine if you’re on the receiving end of the cut 😩

    • @loricawley54

      @@theemanfamily Ty for replying! I saw that Winston had an ear infection when he was groomed. I wanted to mention that our vet has us give our dogs locally harvested honey in their breakfast every morning (about a tsp for Thor at 145lbs). It has cleared up skin and ear issues with all our dogs, but it does need to be locally harvested bc the bees r pollinating the same flowers and plants that Winston is exposed to living there. Honey has a ton of excellent benefits that r anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and can help with a ton of allergy issues. It may be just enough to kick Winston’s immune system into gear to help keep his ears clear. There’s also a channel I follow on RUclips called Veterinary Secrets, and he’s a Canadian vet that gives tons of advice on holistic avenues. Hope this helps!! 🥰💞
